Chapter 8 - Hiding things

Getting down from the luxurious car, Diva made her way to the entrance of the mansion. Standing at the front by Dawin's side, her eyes came to rest on her dad who was looking at the man talking to him. The man had worry and fear written in bold prints all over his face.

The heavy double doors of the mansion opened, revealing a man in his mid-fifties cautiously walking toward them. As he drew near, her hazel eyes widened, stretching the muscles that hold them in place.

Following his every step, her mouth finally fell when he stood a few feet away from them. It took her seconds to regroup, pulling her mouth to its conventional position. Oh Lord help her!

Never, ever has she seen a man's skin so...black. As black as anything black. Her mom was of the Nigerian nationality but of a lighter complexion compared to this man.

Her dad was white, yes their kingdom was full of white people and with her mom and her in the castle, it was like they were black-skinned. They were fair but not as fair as their dad or the people of her kingdom. Once she heard the maids call her mom a 'black woman' in their whispers.

If only.....if only they had seen this man right here, they would call her mom a white woman. This man was.....what do they call it?. Ebony black.

Noticing her eye lingered on him for quite a long time, Diva's dad made his way to where they were, saving her face and having the man slight bow to him.

'This is Mr. Edward. He is a staff here, tasked with the butler's job, he will make sure that all your needs here are attended to'. His words were directed to her having fixed his gaze on her whilst he spoke.

Turning to the dark-skinned man, who was of average height, bald-haired, eyes profound, ring on his married finger, details Diva seemed to have missed. ' You can lead the way '. Mr. Edward bowed and turned around.

' Something just came up and I have to go. I will be back before midnight '. He said to Diva in a low tone surprising her with his words.

Before she could protest, he signaled at Dawin to start walking behind the butler so that Diva could follow, but the latter stood, unmoving which had her dad narrowing his gaze.

' Didn't we promise ourselves after mom's death that we won't hide things from each other? That we got each other's backs '. She reminded him.

Yes, she knew that her father had a company on the grounds of Nigeria when he was still the crowned prince and it was because of that company, he met her mother, having started with an employer-employee relationship. He had camouflaged as one of the few wealthy men in the country at that time and her mother knew nothing about him till he married her and brought her to his kingdom. She knew this because her parents always sing about how they met, playing lovey-dovey under her nose.

Good that they did not hide their love story from her but right now it was like her father was being secretive by not telling her anything. Starting from when they were in the kingdom with him constantly conversing with the same man she had seen a while ago, in the limo, to their flight and then landing. He was always conversing either on the phone or with the man and sometimes the man was the one to speak with someone on the phone and report to him, keeping her in the dark.

The Amethyst king had his voice tied down in silence and when he spoke, Dawin who had not made any movement, running only his eyes from Diva to her father since she spoke, glued them on him.

' I will tell you when I get back '. Knowing that she would keep up with her questions with her level of curiosity, he patted Dawin's back and left in the car'.

The surprise that had started forming on her face, reached her eyes and she kept looking in the direction of the gates as he, her father had left through them. Taking deep breaths, she turned her head to the doors to see the butler already standing at the entrance. Walking away from where she stood, Dawin followed behind her and into the house, having the door closed behind them.
