Chapter 11 - Fred

She woke up in the mid of the day. The sun peeked through the curtain into the room.

Rolling off the blanket, she got down from the bed swiftly, her legs, she knew and mind too, wanted her to be stuck in dreamland but she was a girl of many dreams. A princess striving hard for a defined future

Her feet on the floor, hands on the edge of the bed, body tired, mind lax, but she was already- her eyes scanned the room and fell on the wall clock just above the door. Getting the time in picture, she pushed herself up. She was already halfway through the day!.

Forcing her way to the bathroom, she pulled her sweaty body in. Good thing her mom let her do most things herself while growing up. No need for maids waiting on her to leave her bed

Her time in the bathroom was as quick as she had her mind on it. Hurriedly, she got dressed and headed to the door, ready to dash out of the room.

Feeling the doorknob in her grip, her mind went back to her time on the staircase. Oh no!. She was not going through that again!.

Her hand reached for the button, a switch the man had missed in explaining. Flipping it, she heard the ringing of a bell echoing in the corridor. She stepped out from the door and took steps backward in await of the butler that had promised to be at her beck and call.

Seconds twirled their way to a minute, two, and three and yet the sun-kissed man was to make his appearance. She sat on the bed, crossing her legs, and with her hands on the edge one more time, she stared at the door in expectancy of the staff.

Her stomach grumbled.

It now felt like forever, watching the ticking hands of the clock. The sweet smell of whatever they were cooking downstairs, maybe cheese. No! Pancake. No! A saucy, spiced chicken tisska masala or whatever dripping hot in a pan, filled her room making her even hungrier.

'Where in the--'. Her mouth wanted to utter but those thoughts in her mind were interrupted by the opening of the door in a haste. Mr. Edward stepped in and in the next second he picked up the apologetic pose of clasping his hands together.

His petite structure stood steps away from her bed. 'I deeply apologize for the delay. I had to attend to a guest downstairs'. His unpolished, plain Nigerian accent streamed his words of apologies to her ears.

She nodded and walked to the door. There was certainly no strength to respond. 'The elevator please!'. In less time she was led by the butler to the elevator. Across her dad's room to the left into a space that gave way to two glass doors, doubled with golden handles shaped like torches with diamonds at the top like fire on them.

He opened the door and urged her in. Down they went and finally, the elevator bumped to a stop.

Few seconds!!!

For twenty good minutes, they had stayed in that staircase yesterday, with her gaining a swollen foot at the end. Descending the floors with the elevator felt like nanoseconds.

The doors of the elevator opened into the space that held the stairs at the center.

Just nice! Pretty nice!. The elevator was just adjacent to the stairs and yet it didn't occur to the butler that the fastest way was to use the elevator

Headache stepped in.

And her head felt like it was being occupied by rent-free hungry tiny monsters that feasted on her nerves into the deepest part of her brain. She groggily walked to the door, following the butler who led her to the dining room.

Stepping into the dining room, she surveyed the area. The foods were set on the table, totally new and exquisite, ranging from baked to boiled, to fried and then to-- saucy!. From the looks of them, she could tell. Still surveying the environs, her eyes finally fall on someone who had a yellow thick ball in his right hand, dipping it into a ceramic bowl of green vegetables fused with meats, she guessed, topping it.

He took some vegetables with the yellow round thick food, savoring the taste with closed eyes and letting it go down his throat as his Adam's apple showed the movements.

Diva waited patiently for him to swallow the lump of food and as though stuck in a slow-motion, his eyes opened. Lifting his eyelids gradually, the white part of his eye got exposed with the black pupil, unveiled. Black and empty as a black hole, sucking in the breath of anyone looking in.

Her eyes widened, totally shocked at the outcome. And there sat in front of her, her most annoying cousin. Fred!.
