Chapter 30 - Assessment (Part 2)

Wayne used the same strategy that he used on the first one against the nearest beast to him but soon after he punched a hole through the beast, the other two moved their attention to Wayne.

Waddling towards him, they lept into the air with their jaws agape, Wayne barrel rolled to the side, nearly becoming monster food, he took a deep breath and used [Dark Flame], sweeping the floor with his devastating fire, destroying both of the beasts and a quarter of the town.

When Wayne saw this, he just had a wry smile, thankful this wasn't real, but then the next minute, he could hear Duggar's voice encompassing the whole area.

"Come on, NightFall, even though this is a sim, you still have to care for pedestrians."

Wayne was annoyed that he had to hold himself back a bit, he was just hoping to get more areas with an open field if that's going to be the case. Within the next moment, the surroundings changed around him, and now he was in a bar full of people talking and yelling. Wayne looked around to see if he could spot anything odd, but he couldn't see anything at first then, the next second, a giant arm swung down on half the bar in front of Wayne.

Wayne was taken aback by the sudden attack and looked up to see a 10-meter beast. He quickly ran towards the beast's leg, trying to chop him down to a more manageable size. The beast flailed around to prevent Wayne from getting to him, making it difficult to find an opening.

Wayne didn't have anything strong enough to take down the beast without hurting the people around him, he just needed the immediate area to be cleared, so in a haste, he quickly ran to the civilians, moving them out the way, leaving just the beast and Wayne.

"Alright, ugly, it's just me and you," Wayne said to the beast as he was still flailing his arms in madness.

[Dark Flame]

Wayne took a deeper breath than he did before and let out the destructive fire. The fire quickly melted the lower half of the body, eventually collapsing the rest of the way, melting into the fire.

Wayne wiped a couple of beads of sweat from his forehead as he waited for the surroundings to change again to the level four-stage, he just needed to defeat this level, and he would have a spot with Duggar's team, so he took a second to calm himself and focused on the surroundings as they changed to level four.

This time he was in a swampy area, and when he looked around, all he could see was muck and trees, with no pedestrians in sight. Wayne wondered which beast it'll be this time as he looked around to see if he could catch an inkling of where to go.

A few moments later, he felt a slight trembling under his feet, and it gradually got heavier. Wayne tried to figure out which direction it was coming from but from the vibrations, it felt like it was all around him. Wayne looked up to see shadows moving in the distance, and to his surprise, it was the first average size beast, but from the looks of it this time, there were over fifty of them.

Wayne decided not to let them surround him, giving him nowhere to go, so he ran towards them while activating his abilities.

[Death Smoke] [Shadow Stealth]

Wayne used the night and the smoke as cover to obscure his movements as he fought the horde, which seemed to be more than he had originally thought when he first saw them.

After thirty minutes, Duggar and Rocky were watching Wayne's actions on the projector, and they weren't able to see him because of his ability.

"Do you think he'll do it?" Rocky asked, staring at the screen.

"I think so, I've seen him use this ability before, and it was pretty destructive, I'm just hoping he doesn't run out of steam soon."

After a few minutes, the smoke rescinded, and Wayne deactivated his [Shadow Stealth], letting the two see him panting trying to catch his breath.

"Are you ready to come out, or do you want to keep going?" Duggar said into a microphone for Wayne to hear.

"Take me out!" Wayne said with an exhausting tone.

After a few moments, the chair reverted to sitting upright with the helmet sliding off Wayne's head.

As soon as Wayne got up, Rocky wrapped her arms around him, giving him a tight hug.

"Welcome to the team NightFall," Rocky said with a whisper in Wayne's hair, sending chills throughout his body.

"Thanks," he replied with a wry smile.

"So, what did you think of it?" Duggar asked, trying to let Wayne compose himself, unlike Rocky.

"It was definitely eye-opening, Are the beast in there the ones we've seen?"

"Yeah, every new beast we encounter, we get the information and hand it off to our tech team to input them into the program."

"So how many different variances are there?"

"Well, from what we know at the moment, 87."

"87?! and those are just the ones you've found?"

"Haha yeah, but it's alright, that's why we're here to get rid of them, everybody in the organization is doing everything to exterminate them."

"I guess you're right, so what's next since I passed the assessment?"

"Well, we're going to update your license and introduce you to the team, so then we can head out for a mission."

"A mission? Well, that's quick."

"As I said, these beasts are the priority right now."

Duggar walked to the computer by the chair Wayne was sitting in and input some data, after a few moments, Duggar got Wayne's card and put it inside the computer for a few seconds before it popped back out with the team's name above Wayne's name.

"Now you're official and ready to meet the team," Duggar said as he handed to card back to Wayne.

"Alright, well, where are they?"

"There upstairs waiting for you."

"For me? But I just got here, why would they wait on me?"

"I sort of told them you were going to be our new member," Duggar said with a wry smile, and then he continued before Wayne could say anything.

"Come on, we don't want to make them wait any longer."
