Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: Short end of the stick

[A/N: Nice to have you here everyone. I decided to change the name of the novel or should I say shorten it. This novel, as you might notice is renamed as "Ascension of Kaelestis." Sorry for the inconvenience.]

An amusing scene was taking place in the training hall. Ryan was using his new trick to spam through golems at a rapid pace. One [BOA] was enough to destroy a golem without any problem. Each kill was silent and swift.

After spending a few hours fighting golems which increased in number every time. A new opponent appeared with a faint light. It was an icy blue wolf standing at almost 20 metres. The wolf had metalic blue eyes which shone with intelligence.

"Nice to meet you sir, I wish you a good day." Ryan greeted with a friendly smile which had no malice.

The wolf started circling around Ryan carefully. Ryan noticed that after this wolf appeared, the temperature around him decreased by a really large margin. Although this much cold had no effect on him because of his painfully attained cold resistance.

'Is this guy testing me?' Ryan knew a little about animal behaviour. The wolf didn't take his eyes off Ryan for even a single moment. This was a fight of patience and knowledge.

Ryan can skim through this by brute force but that would not aid him much and also drain his precious mana. The wolf released a low growl trying to scare Ryan who was bubbling to use his new attack on this simulation.

Finally the wolf seemed to run out of patience and attacked Ryan with its claw to immobilise Ryan with one of its abilities [Ice touch], capable of freezing its enemy in a place for a few seconds.

Sometimes this attack can even stop the enemy from using fire type attacks. Quite useful but this attack had a condition it needed to fulfil and that was physical touch. A big limitation.

Ryan saw this attack at the right moment and jumped up to release one of his fire elemental magnum bullets. The wolf let out an ear piercing growl and moved out of the trajectory in a second.

*Growl*

The wolf was agitated and let out an ice cold breath. Ryan was struck with this cold wind, soon he felt that his movements were being restricted. As if it was not enough, the icy blue wolf conjured sharp ice needles capable of piercing through Ryan's skin.

One would need to know that these monsters might not be this strong in the wild because Tia increased the difficulty to max level, making them a lot stronger than usual. If not careful even a dragon might get wounded horribly.

"Oh no." Ryan saw the sharp needles and conjured an explosive ball of fire. The needles collided with the ball of fire and were destroyed by constant explosions.

"I need to make sure he cannot escape my grasp. A cage? Yes, a cage!" Ryan mumbled while he dodged the wolf's attack by using wind magic to reinforce his legs, dispelling the [freeze effect].

*Whistle*

A loud whistle resounded as Ryan was smiling again. His mana was already restored to almost 85%. Mana gushed out of his core as he started luring the wolf towards the exact centre of the training arena.

Why centre you ask? He knew that this wolf wouldn't go to any of the corners in this place. So the centre was perfect for what he was trying to do.

Ryan was well aware that no wolf comes alone and for the next round he will be fighting a whole pack of them. He wanted to figure out a way to kill them without being inflicted with any serious injuries. He can heal really fast but the previous day made him realise how unreliable it was.

As planned, the ice wolf chased him to the centre and released two of its attacks towards Ryan who was just dodging them while thinking of making something new and more large scale than his bullets. Wolves are known for their teamwork and are very careful when hunting so they will most likely dodge his bullets most of the time, resulting in immense wastage of mana.

After his calculation he found out that a fire vortex would cost him less mana and also cover a larger area. To test his theory he used earth magic to create a cage around the giant wolf who was still snarling and growling every moment. After being trapped the wolf started scratching the walls but to no avail Ryan made it really sturdy.

"Now that you are finally inside I can test my attack on you Mr.Wolf." Ryan had a slight smile on his face. He commanded the mana out of his body to form a swirling motion as it intensified and formed a raging vortex. Thinking that the attack was ready he unleashed it after dematerializing the front wall of the cage.

The vortex moved with great ferocity and according to Ryan's estimate the wind speed in this fire tornado was around 230mph, which was impressive if we take notice that one of the most dangerous tornado recorded was around 300mph and it was capable of turning houses into shreds and broken pieces of glass and other debris into lethal missiles. Now think what this fire tornado which was completely made of fire and wind mana can do.

Putting aside the mana cost, this thing was horrifying for the ice wolf whose worst enemy was fire itself. In a moment the tornado struck the wolf as only one loud growl of horror was heard before it lost its life.

This didn't help him measure the power level of this attack. Ryan was really disappointed as his mana was down to half. He was tapping on the floor with his foot while muttering to himself as he looked at the still destructive tornado "This makes it harder for me, but if I need to put an estimate, this will hinder me while fighting long battles."

He dispelled his attack to look at the obvious aftermath. As expected the wolf was gone, not even a single shred of it was left. Powerful but inefficient. Useful but costly.

Ryan decided to put behind his dissatisfaction and looked towards the summoning gate with hungry eyes. He didn't have to wait long because soon he heard the howling of wolves. This time a whole pack of them.

Ryan's glowing eyes met the ice cold gaze of the wolf who stood at 50 metres. A majestic aura permeated through the arena as the Alpha made its appearance. Upon its head lay an ice crown which was stunning on its own. This guy was different as its whole body was white, every step it took one could see shards of ice moving like they were paving its path to sovereignty.

"A king, no matter how I look at it. Truly beautiful." Ryan appreciated the presence of the Wolf King but unknown to him a charming smile appeared on his face as his body was starting to get covered by metallic obsidian scales. Ryan was still unaware of this transformation as his mind was completely focused on the white wolf.

"Now show me what you got, Sir wolf." Ryan, as if like a new found habit, poured mana and summoned a few [BOA]s while staring daggers at the white eyes of the wolf. Eyes that lacked any emotions or fear.

Alpha ice wolves are a species of wolf who need to sacrifice everything to gain their power. Love, sympathy, Everything. This gave them access to power known as [Cryomancy], a power that makes them one with the ice.

There is a saying that wolves will follow their Alpha to even the depths of hell. This was true because behind the alpha wolf a whole pack consisting of hundreds of ice wolves followed with immense confidence visible in their eyes.

The alpha let out a majestic howl as every wolf did the same. Ryan smelt an unknown danger from this and proceeded to cover himself with a layer of fire. This was the right decision because what happened next was amazing to say the least.

The whole arena turned into a domain of ice as even the ceiling had sharp icicles protruding from it. Everywhere Ryan's eyes went all he saw was ice. This was alarming because a moment before this place was filled with hot air and now this arena looked like a place situated deep inside icy mountains.

This was a skill that became powerful when used in number. This skill was known as [Call of the ice], it was an ultimate skill of the ice wolves.

*Growl*

Ryan was a bit puzzled from this sudden show of power but soon regained his composure. Despite his disadvantage he knew that his attacks were powerful enough to kill these guys with ease but his main concern was the Alpha who was standing confidently.

Ryan went offensive from the start and released the [BOA]s he had conjured before while continuing to form his fire tornado with even more mana poured from this core while now having gaping cracks, impatient to evolve.

The tornado like before was changing the atmosphere back to normal as the ice around Ryan was melting in record time. He was still smiling as he said "It was nice meeting you all but I have to fight your king. So I hope you guys understand." He released the two tornadoes as they had a little more of a surprise inside them. If glass shards can turn into missiles then what wold happen to bullets capable of mass genocide.

Ryan pointed a wind mana infused fire sword towards the king who got the gesture and started walking while looking at Ryan with immense hatred. The alpha didn't care much about his pack, if he even cared about them. Sacrificial powers can be very strong and useful but they take away something more important.

Powers were all good and fun until someone who could counter them appeared. No matter how strong the white furred alpha was, he could not tackle his nemesis element fire and Ryan knew this very well.

Ryan infused a lot of mana to enforce his body with wind elements to increase his speed. Ryan was already very fast with his dragon body but Ryan made sure to rely more on mana than his physical abilities.

Why do you ask? Of course to be prepared for different scenarios. when in need the most trusted ability might fail you, so you need to have many different ways to win.

The wolf was still buffed by his [Call of ice] skill. The wolf released multiple sharp ice shards which were quite widespread and this raised a lot of suspicion. Ryan was trying to figure out the reason as the wolf disappeared.

The next moment an ice shard which was passing from Ryan side changed into a 50 metres huge wolf. Ryan was caught off guard and the wolf landed a lethal attack on Ryan which caused him to fly off and crash at the Boundary of the arena. He spit a mouthful of blood while figuring out the reason for the wolf's widespread attack.

He couldn't help but smile while he gave a thumbs up to the wolf for this awesome attack. An attack which was completely unexpected and sudden, giving no chance to evade it.

The wolf which was standing at Ryan's previous position turned into a cold mist and appeared next to Ryan. The wolf looked emotionless like before but if one noticed carefully, they would see a very faint feeling of anger coming from him.

Ryan was still on the ground but when he was struck with this wolf's attack he had sneakily conjured 18 [BOA]s and a tornado. It was the same tornado which had completely annihilated the entire ice wolf pack. The wolves were all burned until nothing was left of them. The only ones standing in the arena were Ryan and the alpha.

"Thanks for opening my eyes big guy, but this is as far as we go." Ryan revealed his hidden cards which were already out to complete their tasks.

"I have to say you were the most beautiful creature I have ever seen." Ryan paid his last respect to the wolf who understood that this time he lost. If he was really alive, then maybe he would have learnt to protect his pack which gave him power. Wolfs are always strong in numbers but the emotionless wolf forgot this important point.

The [BOA] infused tornado did its job and burnt the stunningly beautiful creature to dust. From the start to end the Alpha never showed any weakness. The wolf knew that he was handed the short end of the stick but was still reluctant to cry even a single time.

The pride of a king.

"It's really hard to believe that they are not real." Ryan said while he stood up leisurely.

Ryan was right, these simulations were too real to be called mere fake projections. While fighting them Ryan truly felt that he was fighting the real beings.

He needed to ask Tia about this but now he was about to face something more dangerous than the Alpha wolf and his mana was still recovering.

Ryan felt slight tremors as his new opponent made its appearance. All that was heard was a mighty roar.
