For a moment, Scarlett stood there, just frozen in the entryway, wincing as her parents stood up from their seats, just staring at her.
Then they were rushing her and she closed her eyes, waiting for the inevitable yelling—
Only to be pulled into a tight hug that made her go stiff.
“Oh, my baby, I was so worried, but I’m SO angry at you, but you’re okay!”
Ow, ow, the hug was getting too tight for her liking, but it wasn’t like Scarlett could just break from their hold. All she could do was endure their fretting and bitter words—and hiding the fact that their touch and their worry gave her no comfort right now.
Were these people really her parents?
What would they tell her when she asked?
A part of Scarlett didn’t want to know. She wanted to be able to just turn around, go to her room, and never have to think about this again.
