Bang! Two heavy iron gates slammed shut behind Susie.
She was in complete darkness.
Suddenly, a cold wind gusted by. "Smells good." She heard a low mutter. The next second, she was thrown to the ground.
Something huge was pressing on her. Its breath blew around her neck. It was warm, wet, heavy, and tinged with a smell of blood.
She looked up in horror and met with a pair of vertical pupils in scarlet eyes.
Was it an animal? Or . . . people?
Before she could see what the behemoth on her body was, Susie felt a sharp pain in the neck. Her skin was pierced.
There was a clear gulp sound in darkness. She felt itchy and numb in the neck, hot and dizzy.
"Help . . . " Susie tried her best to make an unclear cry. Just when she thought she was going to die, the burden on her body was suddenly gone.
Almost in a blink, a figure popped up in the corner not far from her.
Susie struggled to stand up and walked forward, trying to see the figure clearly.
"Stop! Stay away from me!" The figure in the corner shouted. Bang! The two iron gates opened and Susie was startled. "Get out if you don't wanna die!"
Susie's heart was palpitating. She'd run away immediately if she could. However, she must stay and carry out the mission master Ryan Jackson assigned her as her father had already sold her to the Jackson family to pay off his gambling debts.
Susie tried to adjust her breathing to calm herself down, licked the corner of her mouth nervously, and asked in a trembling voice, "Excuse me, are you Mr. Kain Jackson?"
No sooner had Susie asked, a glass was thrown at her. She tilted her head instinctively, only to find that the glass missed her.
Susie's heart was thudding madly. It was actually thrown from behind her and she was sure that there was no third person in the room except her and the man standing in the corner.
At all once, she thought of the news about the Jackson family's misfortune three years ago. Kent Jackson, the former master of the Jackson family, died in a car accident. Later, Kain, the eldest son of Kent, suffered an accident and lost his sight. After that, Ryan Jackson, Kent's younger brother, succeeded Kent and became the new master of the family.
There were even pictures of Kain's hands stained with blood in the woods behind the family's villa.
Those pictures caused a stir online. Some people said that Kain couldn't bear the knock of fortune and went mad; some believed that Kain was a monster, who was imprisoned in the castle in the Black Wood since childhood; some suspected Kain was a vampire . . .
Susie used to think these remarks were ridiculous, but now it seemed that they made sense. "Hello, I'm the carer sent by master Ryan." She fought to control her fright yet her voice still quavered.
By the light of the moon, Susie raised her head and took a quick peek. She saw a man with morbidly pale skin, fierce eyes, blood on his lips, and blue veins bulging on his forehead.
"What's wrong with you?" The man was sweating on his forehead and looked in extreme pain.
"I said get out! Are you deaf?!" He growled, a brutish light glinting in his scarlet eyes.
Susie shivered and muttered darkly, "My knees are weak."
