'Goodnight Kathy.' Mauve said.
'Goodnight.' Kathy closed the door behind her.
I felt relieved that it had gone well but I'd already made up my mind to see Kathy again because I was not fully satisfied with everything she told us. I felt there was more.
'You don't get to be the savior you know? Mauve and I were handling it just fine. She needs to move on and no one should sugarcoat that.' Alicia was definitely angry that I had cut Mauve off.
I only did what seemed like the right thing to do. Kathy definitely had enough pressure on her, both from family and friends, I did not want us to look like extra luggage she had to carry.
'She definitely needed a savior back there. If I were her, I would.'
'She doesn't want anyone telling her to move on, she wants someone who is ready to walk through the process with her.' I opened the car door and went in.
Mauve was too quiet. She was probably reflecting on what she had said and knowing her, she already came to terms with the fact that she was wrong but Alicia was not one to accept her faults. She was like Nate in some kind of way.
'Kassy, I might have to ask you to stop coming with Mauve and I to meet these women. You don't understand them.' Alicia got in and Mauve drove off.
I was not in any way surprised about what she said. Alicia was someone who hated competition. She always wanted to be right and wanted everything to go her way.
I knew arguing with her right then would be pointless so I sat there and said nothing.
George's house was a few blocks away from mine so I did not have to endure the awkward silence for too long.
Mauve, who enjoyed letting herself into our house declined Alicia's offer of dinner and then I knew something was really wrong.
'What do you mean you don't want to eat? Just come in for a while.' Alicia said.
'I'm fine. I really am. Plus I have some paperwork to sort out tonight. Thanks though.'
Mauve never said anything about her job around us so it was weird for her to bring it up at that particular time.
'Alright. Kassy, let's go.' Alicia opened her door and stepped out of the car.
'I need to talk to Mauve for a while.' I said.
'Hm. Okay but don't stay out too long.' She said and walked away.
'This has nothing to do with Kathy. It is about Nate. Today was really mind blowing for me.' Mauve said.
I knew there was no way visiting Nate was not going to create some kind of tension for Mauve.
Although I hated that she was always in my face, I still pitied her. Of all of Nate's victims, she had been the bravest.
She did a stupid thing for someone she loved and that was what made her lose it when she found out he was cheating.
'What happened?' I asked.
'Nate. He said some really cruel things to me today. He said I had not been there for him when he needed me the most.'
'He said I never listened to his side of the story and I just made decisions without thinking first.' She reached for my hand.
Typical Nate. Mauve was probably blaming herself for his imprisonment, afterall, if she had kept her mouth shut, he never would have been in jail and maybe he would have gotten proper treatment for his problems now.
'It's not your fault that he's in jail right now. It's his fault and that's one thing my brother has decided to close his mind to.'
'He does not want to take the blame for anything he did. You were brave enough to turn him in. I know I would not have if I were in your shoes.' I squeezed her hand.
At that moment, I realized I had never heard from Mauve what had happened between her and Nate. everything I knew about her, I heard from other people but at that point, I wanted to know what really occurred from her own point of view.
'I don't feel like it isn't my fault. I basically set up cameras and threatened him till I got his voice on a recorder saying he was going about, raping people.' She smiled.
She was really brave to have pulled that off. I wanted to hug her but the car was too small so I sat in my chair looking at the beautiful green eyed woman in front of me.
'You saved a lot of girls from that monster, Mauve. You're basically the hero here.'
'There's a really high possibility that you saved me from him too. It must have taken you everything to turn him in because after all, you had feelings for him but you did it anyway.'
'That just goes to show that you would have carried his problems with a smile on your face if he had not been involved with other women. I am so proud of you.' I squeezed her hand.
I often thought about what would have happened if Nate never got arrested. He raped Alicia and there was no guarantee he did not have his eyes on me.
'Kassy, you're a wonderful person. I'm sure no one tells you that often but you really are.'
'I'm sorry about Lily and I think you should get going now. Plus, I don't really have any paperwork to sort out.' She laughed.
I was glad I got the opportunity to tell her how amazing she had been.
Nate did not deserve her and quite frankly, he did not deserve anyone. I got out of her car and went into the house.
Mum was talking with Alicia in the kitchen. They were not laughing and it sounded like they were reflecting on something.
I had already gotten used to their bond and it did not surprise me to see them whispering to each other or laughing at the top of their lungs anymore.
'But you don't think David is going to hurt him anymore, do you?' I heard mum ask.
I went to the kitchen and saw them eating bread and peanut butter.
They hadn't even noticed I walked in or maybe they intentionally ignored me. David was on Nate's neck again. It somehow made me very happy that he was paying for his crime in every way possible.
