Chapter 39 - A Guilty Food Binger

"I'm heading to your husband's company," Alec said. La0ura opened her eyes wide. "Are you crazy? Why the hell will you go to that place?" Laura said with agitation. "I want to check something", Alec simply replied.

"Mom, where did you find this lunatic from? He has a death wish", Anthony said with disdain. Alec simply ignored him and looked at Laura. "I'm only going to investigate, nothing else. Instead of hiding away, I handle my problems by facing them", Alec said and opened the gate.

Laura quickly followed him and grabbed his shirt, stopping him. "Alex, that we are not the cowards you think we are. You have no idea what you are getting yourself into. These people are very smart and dangerous. Please don't do something stupid", Laura said with pleading eyes. Alec shook himself from her grip and turned around.

"What do you care if I die or not? I'm doing you a favor by the way. Whether I risk my life or not does not affect you or your son", Alec said, his voice trailing off slowly. Laura stood at the gate, looking at Alec's back dumbfounded.

"Mom, come in. Let that lunatic go", Anthony said as he came out of the gate. Laura, however, didn't respond as she appeared to be deep in thought. "We have to change plans", Laura muttered with a low voice, but Anthony heard it.

"Why?" Anthony asked with a frown. "There are lots of variables going against us right now. This Alex guy is very uncertain. Just yesterday he saved me, and now he wants to go investigate Greg's partners. Doesn't it sound strange?" Laura said looking at Anthony.

"Yeah... Yeah. I knew that guy was weird. I didn't even trust him one bit. He was probably sent by them to find our hideouts, and he's going back to report to them", Anthony said, raising his voice in agitation. "Mom here is not safe anymore", he said worriedly.

"We have to follow him", Laura said with a hard voice and entered their house and took the car key. "Wait, are you not going to take the things that would sustain us throughout the journey? There is no guarantee we are coming back here", Anthony said solemnly.

"I have a lot of cash inside here, don't worry. Just enter the car and let's move before we lost him", Laura said and started the engine. Anthony climbed to the passenger seat, and the car drove away from the street and into the road.

According to the map he drew on the paper, this was probably the location on one of the branches of Innovex Global company. He approached the highrise building and asked around which floor the company was located. "It's fifty-fifth floor", a young man with a suit said. Alec thanked him and entered the elevator and typed '55' on the elevator buttons. Soon, the elevator began moving.

He made sure his gun and the necklace were in his pocket before he did anything. The elevator door opened, and Alec came out of the elevator and was visited by a large receptionist section of the building. He walked to a receptionist who was on a call. As she saw Alec, she quickly ended the call and flashed her professional smile.

"Hello sir, what can I do for you", she asked. "Can I see your manager?" Alec asked directly. He had no desire to stay here long. The lady's face changed at the mention of the manager. "Okay. Do you have an appointment with him?" The lady asked, maintaining her smile.

"No. Can I see him, like now?" Alec asked. "Uhm, no, I'm sorry. An appointment has to be set for this to be possible", the lady replied with an apologetic face. "Is he here?" Alec probed.

"Sir, even if he is here, which he's not, you can't meet him unless you set an appointment. Please, let me set you an appointment on when he would probably be free", the lady said with a tinge of irritation, but her smile didn't waver. She was probably used to this kind of situation.

Alec didn't reply and took his pen and wrote something on his paper, tore a portion, and handed it to the lady receptionist. "Take this, and give it to him personally. Tell him it's very important, he'll understand", Alec said and pushed the paper across the table towards the receptionist and left the floor through the elevator. "What the hell was that?" The receptionist mumbled with a crease on her forehead as she stared at the paper in her hand.

Alec was a guilty food binger. He was easily triggered by the aroma of foods emanating from restaurants any time he passes one by. Despite his efforts in curbing this unusual desire, he always found himself salivating at those foods on the show glass. This was a weakness only he knows about, so he tried his best and avoid any restaurant he passes.

Right now, there was a restaurant just two shops away from the high-rise building. The smell of Italian spaghetti was tempting him hard, so he couldn't help himself and headed to the restaurant.

The money he had with him was the money he picked from the couch inside of Laura's home. It was a freaking one thousand dollar note, just lying around below the couch. Seeing that Laura was an ex-husband to a multi-billionaire, he didn't believe taking a measly one thousand dollar note would affect them at all.

He wasn't stealing it though. He planned to pay them back after he finds a way to, actually pay them. With a raised brow, he opened the door of the restaurant and walked in.

Less than ten people patronized this restaurant, but they all seem to be enjoying themselves. Alec chose a comfortable place to seat and settled down, waiting for the waiter to arrive at his table.

A young girl on her sweet sixteen approached Alec with an apron tied at her waist. "Hello mister, what can I offer you today?" She began with a well-defined Australian accent and flashed a smile. Alec looked at her and could not help but admire her features. She was pretty, which would make anyone wonder why she was working at a restaurant like this.

"Do you have a spaghetti dish?" Alec asked innocently. The girl laughed lightly and said, "What kind of spaghetti? We have varieties of spaghetti dishes to offer", the girl waiter informed Alec.

"Anyone would do", Alec replied and rested his back on the seat. The girl wrote something on her small note and nodded. "Alright, I'll get back to you soon", the girl said and walked away. Alec took out the map and tried to study it further. All the places he circled were all the companies Laura's ex-husband owned, and he planned to explore them all. 360 days was more than enough time to get this done anyway.
