Chapter 9 - A Hidden Painful Past

At first Jun-woo didn't intend to join Gin in Sun's because he never liked that kind of place. Besides, he had something important to do today by accompanying his older brother to meet his business colleagues and have dinner together. But it turned out that the meeting would end so quickly. When Jun-woo was on the way home, he suddenly recalled the reason Gin went to Sun's; he couldn't help but worry. So he asked his driver to change direction and go to Sun's.

But instead of finding Gin, he somehow heard people insulting Song Gin. Their words are so disgusting and hard to hear, which caused Jun-woo's anger to explode. So that fight happened. He wouldn't hesitate to beat the men to death if only the guards at the bar hadn't rushed to stop him.

Anger made Jun-woo hard to think straight. Since he was blocked from releasing his anger towards these trash bastards, he left that disgusting place quickly. It was only when a cold wind blew from the window of a moving car, Jun-woo realized what was the purpose he was going there and began to worry whether Gin was or not at Sun's when those people were talking bad about her.

Jun-woo took a deep breath and let it out slowly to calm his anger. After feeling better a bit, then did he dial Gin's number.

Jun-woo had to wait a long time before the call was picked up.

Gin's cheerful voice came from across the line. "Yo bro~ Wassup?"

"Why does it take so long to pick up the phone?" Jun-woo said with a suspicious tone.

"I was in the kitchen while my phone was in the living room. What's with that tone of yours? Are you feeling upset? Could it be because you went to Sun's and didn't find me? Sorry buddy, I overslept so I'm not in the mood to go anymore."

Jun-woo swallowed back the question that Gin had already answered. Gin's tone was so calm like she told the truth. So Jun-woo no longer suspected her.

"Yeah, I was there but you weren't there. Next time there is no need to go there even if you are in a bad mood," Jun-woo said honestly.

He didn't dare lie when Gin caught his annoyed tone. If Gin was suspicious when he lied and found out what happened, It was not the result Jun-woo wanted.

"You talk like I'm a regular customer of that bar. I don't care about such places so you can rest assured. Stop nagging now."

"Okay then I'll hang up."

"Hu-uh go on."

Jun-woo put his cell phone to the seat next to him then closed his eyes. Kang Cheol's words echoed in his head. His words indeed was bad but what he mentioned was also the truth.

Gin used to be so vicious. Her personality was unpredictable and her temper wasn't good either. She often got into fights if she was being provoked. As a result, her family was very worried about her, not to mention Jun-woo's family too. Maybe everyone didn't know why a little girl could be that violent. But both Gin's family and Jun-woo's family knew the cause very well. That was why instead of being angry and ashamed of her, they were very sad and helpless about her.

13 year old Gin was a very poor girl.

H University Hospital. XX18.

"Your child has overdosed on drugs.  Her condition is unstable and has serious mental trauma,"said the doctor in front of the patient's room with a heavy expression on his face.

"My dear daughter, how did this happen to her?" Gin's mother's sobs echoed in the hospital hallway. Gin's father hugged his wife with red on his eyes.

The policeman standing beside the doctor sighed.  "Not only they do kidnappings but also do some experiments to children by inputting drugs into their body."

Gin's mother's cries got louder and louder until she fainted. The heavy atmosphere because of the incident turned to chaos due to the panics.  Gin's mother was carried into the next room. The doctor immediately checked Mrs. Song's condition and went out of the room after making sure she was okay.

Meanwhile, the police spoke to Mr.  Song at the end of the corridor."This case is so complex that we have no option but to involve your daughter in our investigation.  Professor Song, you have to prepare yourself because there's a possibility that your child might get serious character distortion. Most of the children, as the victims, who had been the subject of a long time experiment all had a brutal attitude. We will make sure to provide the best psychiatrist for it."

Even though Mr. Song was so angry, he couldn't help but raise his voice.  "My daughter is not crazy."

The policeman frowned.  "You know it better, Professor.  We will depend on you to tell Mrs.  Song. Then I'll excuse myself."

Mr. Song did not respond to the police farewell. He stood there for a long time with a blank stare.

Mr. Song looked at his daughter who was still unconscious. When he saw how there were red and purple bruises on her arms, he wanted to touch them but found his hands shaking.

Doctor Jung looked at his friend sadly."Looking at the wounds, we suspect your daughter was hit by a blunt object while trying to fight back.  I don't know if it's right for me to be relieved that your daughter's bones are quite solid to prevent her getting a fracture.  Or perhaps, the criminals didn't seem to have any intention of actually harming the victim since we didn't find the wound on her head."

"It's my fault that my daughter is suffering like this," said Mr. Song in a hoarse voice.

Doctor Jung looked at his friend with a serious look.  "Min, I understand that you are very sad right now but don't blame yourself. You can act like this when you're alone but don't show it in front of your wife and children. They've suffered enough for little girl Gin."

Mr. Song nodded his head so Doctor Jung didn't say anything else. The doctor then left the room in silence but he found that Song Yi was standing in front of the door for who knows how long it had been.

Song Yi still wore her high school uniform.  The girl lowered her head slightly.  "Uncle, thank you."

Doctor Jung shook his head.  "This is what I should have done."

Song Yi also shook her head. "Appa is a tender person and he loves Ginu very much.  My sister is only 13 years old and she has to face this misfortune. We are all very sad, angry, and sorry.  I'm afraid Appa will get lost in his sadness so I ask Uncle to always remind Appa."

"Allright, Uncle promises. So Yiyi must also be strong."

Song Yi froze but she still nodded.  "En."

Gin had been unconscious for more than 8 days. During this time, the police often visited the hospital to check on her condition. The bruises on her body had started to fade but because she had an overdose her body became thin over time. Mrs. Song was also getting skinny because of it.

Mrs. Han became impatient as he pulled Mrs.  Song to sit down."Miyeon, look how bad you look. Come on, at least eat something."

Mrs Song's pale face highlighted her fragility.  "I don't know when my daughter will wake up. How can I eat."

Mrs. Han was angry hearing it.  "Miyeon, you  know very well how serious  little girl Gin's condition is.  Doctor couldn't tell exactly if Gin's mental state will be fine when she wakes up one day. At that time you had to always accompany your child but seeing your self harm you can only make things difficult for Gin."

Mrs. Song gasped and started to cry.  "That girl is still a kid but suffers like this. I, as a mother, can't protect her. You have no idea how scared I was when I found out that Ginu had disappeared.  And when she came back to me, she was dying!"

Mrs. Han couldn't stand the sight. She no longer scolded her, instead she squeezed Mrs. Song and also cried in silence.

Song Yi sat in front of Gin's room. She stared blankly when she heard the sound of his mother crying inside.  She dug his nails deep into her palms.

Little Han Jun-woo saw the sad sight of Song Yi and suddenly felt a pain in his chest.  He didn't understand why. But it didn't stop him subconsciously leading his feet straight to Song Yi.

"Nuna, don't be sad.  Gin will wake up soon."

Song Yi raised her head as she found her little sister's playmate standing stiffly, trying his best to comfort her in a timid voice.  She smiled and nodded.

"Hmm. As soon as Gin wakes up from her sleep, Junwoo must help Nuna to accompany Gin, will you?"

Little Jun-woo bit his lip blushing at Song Yi's smile. He nodded his head with a look full of determination to fulfill Song Yi's request.

Jun-woo's response finally comforted Song Yi.  She then pulled Junwoo's hand to enter the room together.

"Then let's go inside to see Ginu."

••

Mr. Song has worked very hard to help with the investigation of his daughter's case.  He contacted all his colleagues that he thought might help him get justice for Gin.  Even if his feelings were very chaotic and messy, it wouldn't affect his job.  However he was an honored professor at KAIST, so he would not show his badness in front of others, especially in front of his family.  It was all just for the sake of Gin.

As he had just returned from the police station and was on his way to the hospitalThe ringing tone of a telephone call sounded in the silent car. Mr. Song was frightened when he saw the caller ID was Doctor Jung.

"Min, your daughter has woken up from her coma.  Come here quickly."

No response from Mr.  Song but the car had been speeding.

No one knew what they should do in this heavy atmosphere. At first they were overcome with joy to find that Gin had awakened from her coma but not feeling rejoicing enough, an even worse reality had hit everyone's minds.

Doctor Jung froze after checking Gin's condition. The girl woke up in silence. She opened her eyes slowly when Mrs. Song was wiping her body. Gin hadn't said a word since she came to her senses.

In a certain room, Doctor Jung looked at the psychiatrist in front of him and responded with a shake. Beside him Mr.  Song was expressionless.

The psychiatrist called Doctor Kim looked at the note in her hand seriously.  "I didn't think that out of all the worst things that could happen, Patient Song didn't experience anything." Doctor Kim raised her head and looked at Doctor Jung and Mr. Song. She continued, "I'm afraid this isn't good news.  For children, this condition is not normal."

Doctor Jung still wanted to hold on to a glimmer of hope. "Ginu might be a rare state because God protected him."

Doctor Kim frowned after placing the note between Mr. Song and Doctor Jung. "Patient Song is only 13 years old.  For children who have been abducted for 68 hours, it has been enough to destroy their mental stability.  Not to mention she has even been poisoned by illegal drugs which have proven to be harmful to her nerves.  In addition, she also experienced physical violence.  Doctor Jung, Professor Song, I ask you, is it normal for a child who has just woken up from a coma for more than a week to not make any fuss with frightening composure? Another victim's record stated that they would soon become hysterical and would not allow anyone to approach them.  Some of them forget their relatives and are often absent-minded.  Finally they have to be examined with very intensive treatment because various types of phobias appear later in life."

Very long explanation and every sentence pierced Mr. Song's heart cruelly.  Until he left the room and entered the ward where Gin was there alone, he still didn't say anything.

Gin, who was staring out the window, turned her head when heard the sound of the door opening.  Mr.  Song stood in front of her with red eyes, trying to hold his tears from falling.  Little Gin lifted the corners of her lips.

"Daddy, I'm fine. Do not be sad."

Mr.  Song couldn't take it anymore and finally hugged his daughter while crying.

Song Gin looked at her father without any expression on her face then looked out the window again without saying a word.
