Becca almost spurted out blood due to anger, she immediately rose to her feet after Bree uttered those words, her left index finger pointing at Bree.
Bree stood up in respect.
"What is the meaning of this?" Becca roared "you are such a beautiful girl, intelligent, an honor student, Bree Vaughn, what is the meaning of this stupidity, you want to throw your life away?"
"Being a doctor, I can save lives, being a detective I can protect lives, aren't they the same thing?" Bree retorted calmly
Becca sucked in a deep breath, she couldn't lie, Bree made a valid point, but there was no way she would give in "what about your financial benefits?" Bree glanced her way "you can't keep living off Andrea's wealth"
Becca knew that Bree was a prideful person, and those words pierced deep like an arrow running right through her. She watched as Bree's expression hardened. Becca gave herself a mental pat for a job well done.
"I do not want to live off Andrea" Bree opened up different dimensions the conversation could go through resulting in a change in topic and maybe Becca's acceptance.
The two ways the conversation could change was either positive or negative, Becca could ignore her statement and advance in procuring Bree to change her mind or, she would read the hidden meaning in those words.
But of course, Becca was slightly as stubborn as Bree, and intelligent too. She knew what Bree had planned with those words but there was no way on Earth she would indulge in trying to understand what she said.
"If you don't want to live off Andrea, then get a damn job that pays well or else for the rest of your life, she'll be the one paying for all your expenses."
Bree almost rolled her eyes at how predictable Becca was. Bree had initially forspelled Becca's actions, but there was always a back up plan.
"It's too late now, I've already been accepted," Bree informed.
"You've been accepted, but you can still decide to go or not to" Becca's heart was beating faster as she hoped that Bree wouldn't utter the next words.
Luckily for her, Bree didn't say anything, she only gave her a look and walked straight to her room. While she was gone, Becca quickly poured herself a glass of whiskey to help calm her nerves. The bitter, erratic taste of alcohol ironically brought about a sudden peace to her nervous system.
Bree was a force to be reckoned with.
Bree walked back into the living room holding some letters in her hand, Becca's attention was locked in those letters. Bree gently placed the letters right beside her glass of alcohol.
"I already paid for the tuition" Bree watched as Becca glanced at the letters, her countenance changing at a pace visible to the human eye, her eyes twitched in anger, the bottle of whiskey she held slipped from her grasp and met the cold hard floor followed by the sound of breaking glass.
"Bree!" She yelled out. She must've noticed the way Bree's expression turned ugly from being yelled at, for a moment Becca forgot all what the child had gone through, so she took a deep breath and calmed her rage. "Where did you get the money to pay for it?"
"I applied for a student loan," Bree gestured to the letters.
Becca couldn't say anything more, the deed had already been done, no matter what she would do or what she would say, it would be like blowing air to the wind, Bree wouldn't listen.
So all she could do was live with it "I hope you are not doing this because of a crush"
Bree's heart skipped a beat: "I am not"
"You've never been a liar, but you do know how to select your words, I'm sure there should be another sentence behind that phrase, but you would never say" Becca snorted and walked away.
Bree stayed rooted staring at the letters on the counter, she looked towards the hallway and caught a glance of a receding shadow.
Becca slammed the door shut as she stormed into her room, she had tried so hard to school her expression, her emotions but she couldn't hold it in any longer, that was why she gave up and left.
It was hard staring into those green eyes and keeping her sanity.
What fueled her rage was when Bree couldn't deliver a straight answer, she didn't refute what Becca had asked, nor did she agree either.
The whole ambiguity was giving her a headache, her emotions were all over the place as she picked her phone and called her husband who had been away for a long time.
"Honey" Her husband answered the call after the third ring.
"Bree is thinking of becoming a police officer, a detective, how absurd is that?" Becca wasted no time in beating around the bush.
"There's no problem with that, she's nothing but an embroidered pillow, she can't find out anything about me, you shouldn't let that get you worked up"
If Becca was listening intently to what he had said she would have realized the words that shouldn't be there in the first place.
But Becca was blinded and her hearing impaired to anything that had nothing to do with Bree, the only thing she heard was 'Bree is an embroidered pillow'
"Bree is not an embroidered pillow, you know nothing about her, she's smart and great" and of course she was a simp for Bree.
"Baby girl" his tone changed to "you're being rather defensive". He said like he was only stating a fact but Becca knew all too well that he was cautioning her.
"I'm not being defensive or anything, I know that girl and you don't" she said.
"Of course you do, isn't she exactly like her mother, and of course you knew her mother all too well, right?" He succeeded in reminding her of her once undying love for Bree's mother.
Bree's mother; Alex, was Becca's best friend. Alex came out as a lesbian and a lot of people stigmatized her for it, but Alex never cared, her parents even disowned her and her siblings abandoned her but that didn't change Alex's heart, but her life went down the drain as she got a job as a sex worker, until she met Finch and they got married.
Becca's secret all these years was that she was helplessly in love with Alex, but she couldn't come out as a lesbian, the pain she saw Alex going through scared the shit out of her and she remained in the closet, but when she decided to step out and maybe help Alex's life, her family forced her to get married to Gabriel; her current husband.
When she heard Alex had died of cancer, she immediately sought out the child and took her in for her own. She didn't even bother to find out who the father was because Finch was a woman and there was no way a woman could get another pregnant.
For Gabriel to remind her of her past meant that he must've thought the same thing would be repeating itself, that is, Becca possessing feelings for a fellow woman, even worse, the offspring of her sexual awakening.
"It's nothing like that," she said quietly.
"I hope not, it'll be bad if that poor girl would die in the field due to a stray gunshot" Gabriel said but Becca didn't catch the threat of those words nor did she read in between the lines.
It seemed like Becca's intelligence was only employed when she was arguing with Bree but for other things she was a dimwit, a daft.
Bree really did bring out the best in her.
