Sara was very worried about her new friend Hikma. When she got home, her mother wasn't home. Only aunt Rama and the annoying Sonia who thought that she was the Queen of the house since she believed Gabriel would marry her.
Sara felt very sick as she retired to her bedroom. Sick with contempt and loathing towards Roti. She would love it if Roti was fired. But if Roti was fired, Hikma would suffer. Sara saw the need to visit Hikma more often to give her assurance of better days ahead.
She would wholeheartedly ask her older brother Gabriel to help Hikma. But Gabriel wasn't one who would easily give in to people because of their miserable conditions. And besides, she felt like he hated that poor blind girl. Was it because she was blind? Or was it because he knocked her down ? She didn't seem to get the pieces to fit together.
All she knew was that, the only one who could help her now was her mother Nawar. Sara was exhausted and decided to go to sleep. She quickly took her shower and decided to go for a late night snack before going to bed.
While downstairs, she met her older brother Gabriel on the phone.
Usually, he would have been in his room by now, but the guess was that, he was hungry.
She walked with meditated steps to him. There she noticed something. Something new. A new tattoo. The tattoo of some words in Arabic. She wasn't one who spoke too much Arabic so she couldn't interprete it.
"Of course she's home.... She went out a bit and just returned..... Sure Mama" he spoke into the phone before hanging up.
"Bhai....?" she called. He turned round to meet the eyes of his sister.
"Uh Huh ?" he answered as he sipped the glass of vodka in his hand. He wasn't an alcoholic for sure but he drunk anytime he was going through some kind of mental
Her brother's eyes were red and looked tired.
"You've been drinking and smoking ?" she asked. He just shrugged his shoulder at her like it was no big deal.
"Are you hungry?" she asked him. He shook his head.
"I went to meet the girl you knocked down you know?...." she told him trying to get his mind home. His eyes looked very distant and stressed.
" OK" was his only response before he got up and staggered into his room.
Sara was worried about him. She saw beyond his eyes many thoughts and many demons.
Demons from a horrible past he went through.
Gabriel opened the door to his room and staggered to his bed. He was angry. Angry at everyone. Angry at himself. Angry at life. At his family and infact everything. He felt something very wrong happening. His heart felt it. He didn't know why. He felt like someone needed help. Perhaps him.
He felt more and more restless.
Beep....
His phone went off. He quickly picked up when he saw the caller. It was Salman his best friend. More like a brother from another mother.
"Salman!" he spoke.
"Gabriel ! The ware house! Some idiot was caught trying to steal weapons!" he informed.
"What?!!" Gabriel growled.
"Will you be coming? Or should I handle it?" Salman asked.
"I'll be there soon" Gabriel answered simply before hanging up. He quickly threw on his Balenciaga sweats and took out a Mac 11 from his closet. He stomped out of his room but was stopped by his mother Nawar.
She had earlier called to ask if Sara had gotten home yet since she decided to go look for her friend. Nawar herself had gone to visit her ill older sister in the village that morning and was just returning with a load of fresh vegetables, spices and fruits.
Her sister was a farmer in the village and had recently been suffering from toothache.
"Where are you going to young man ?" she asked with an eye brow raised. She looked so small and frail. She was in her early 60s and in her youth, she had suffered a lot and it was a visible all over her. She gave him a small mischievous smirk. It was cute.
" Hello Mama. Welcome back" he greeted her respecfully as he smirked back at her and walked her to her room. His smirk was just like his late father's. His father was a religious man. A mufti. But he, on the other hand, was not religious. In fact he was a sinful being. Not from the beginning though.
He was once a very good lad. The first Hafiz in his family after his father. He used to be the one who taught his younger sister how to recite the Qur'an and how to pray. But today, he couldn't remember the last time he prayed or said the 'Salam'.
It had been literally 19 years since he last prayed. He had fallen from grace to sin. But had elevated the family name from Grass to Grace.
No one knew Gabriel. He didn't exist to them. All they knew was a killer was lurking in the shadows of a man living amongst them.
"Thank you my son. I am so tired. Aunt Sauda sends her love to you" she told him as she sat on the bed and her son volunteered to help her take off her footwear.
"Oh its been a while. Gabriel can you get me a glass of water please? And 2 dates?" she requested lazily. Her wish most definitely was his command. He walked downstairs and brought her a glass of water and a small bowl of dates. She was asleep by the time the things she requested were brought.
Gabriel placed a single kiss on his mother's forehead before he walked out of the room.
The house was quite quiet when he left. He figured everyone was asleep.
He drove his range rover out of the mansion onto the main street. The drive was quite long but every moment of it went a long way to help him relieve himself of some tiresome thoughts.
Gabriel's car screeched loudly as he suddenly halted the car. He had spotted something beautiful and very alluring. The young maiden from few days ago. There she sat. Crouched on the ground before an old dilapidated house. He could see her all the way from across the street. It was literally twilight and she didn't look like she had slept.
Her face was tear stained.
She looked troubled. He didn't know for how long he stayed staring at her but, it seemed like 3 hours before the door to the house where she sat opened and an older woman came out and spoke some words to the young lady and with a sad, frightened expression, she got up and limped into the home.
Gabriel sighed and sped off.
Gabriel arrived at his warehouse an hour and half later by then, it was 4:00 am . The culprit was tied up and was thrown into a dungeon. Gabriel growled as Salman, his only friend directed him to the place where the culprit was put. The culprit was in blindfolds with a gag placed in his mouth.
Gabriel ruthlessly pulled off the blindfolds from the young man's face. He had brown eyes and perverted lips. He looked scared, as though he wanted to piss himself. Gabriel loved that sense of fear he put in this idiot. He smirked evily at him.
"What's your name?" he asked the idiot. The young man seemed to lose his sense of speech. He begun stammering in fear and panic.
A thunderous slap knocked him off the chair from Gabriel, waking him up from his daze. He groaned in pain as Gabriel's hand left a palm print on his cheek. Surely, he messed with the wrong person and he was penitent enough to regret his actions.
But no foe of Gabriel's escaped his wrath.
"B-Basit.." he stammered in pain and fear.
"And do you know who I am...?" Gabriel asked him in a sinister tone.
He trembled as he shook his head in fright. He truly had made a mistake by coming here. He saw evil within the dark green eyes of this Alpha Male before him. He knew he had trespassed and deep within him, he prayed that God saved him or else, this man would annihilate him.
"Yet you tried to steal from me?" Gabriel asked in a pissed off tone. This bastard Basit knew he was in deep shit. There was no redemption for him.
"P-Please....forgive me. It w-wasn't me. H-He promised to pay off all mine and my mother's debts if I stole for him and if my mother gave him my blind aunt to marry. P-Please...I was influenced. I beg you" Basit confessed.
Gabriel seemed interested in this story. Who was this man, this idiot was talking about? His mother? A blind aunt? To marry?
"Who is he?!!!" Gabriel growled at the mistake of a man before him.
"P-Ple..." Gabriel served him a mighty punch in the guts sending him off the chair to the ground, breaking his two front teeth and groaning painfully with blood from his throat and his nose.
"Don't plead with me if you want to live. Who is He???!!!!" Gabriel asked for the last time.
"David! David Jones! Please. Its David Jones." Basit revealed finally.
"Good. We'll get to know each other better, later." Gabriel spoke as he wiped away the blood from his palm.
Salman ordered 3 men to take Basit to the dungeon. Gabriel was furious. Who was this David Jones man? And why was he doing this? But surely, Gabriel would make him regret everything.
"I will be back at 10. Get him to open up to you more." Gabriel instructed. Salman nodded as Gabriel stepped out of the warehouse to his car outside.
The drive back was quite more exhausting. By then, the Adhan for Fajr prayers was being called. He made a quick stop at the same street he saw the maiden sit before a dilapidated house. He could literally visualise her sitting there.
What was she doing to him? Why was he feeling this much pity within him? Had she bewitched him? Or was he suddenly turning soft?
He growled and stomped on the accelerator as he sped off.
Gabriel got home after 20 minutes. His uncle Taimur was the first to wake up. He made sure everyone was out of their beds and ready to say their Fajr prayers.
Gabriel on the other hand, walked past his family to his room. They all still had sleepy faces but their Imaan was greater than everything else to them.
Gabriel walked to his bed and sat down. His eyes red. Out of the world. Reminiscence. Thoughts and Intentions.
He would find out who this David was and he would destroy him.
He promised.
