Chapter 3 - Chapter Two: Welcome To Dirt

You can't believe it... Jenni didn't see you jump out of the car... and now... you're stuck here in the middle of the desert. Looking around seeing nothing but the road and sand. A couple of cactuses and tumbleweeds rolling around but you don't see anyone or building out here.

You take out your rabbit sunscreen and spray it all over you since you're definitely going to need it before putting it back in your bag. Luckily you also brought your sunhat, it should give you some shade. After adjusting your bookbag making sure it stays on your back as you walk you start walking down the side of the road in the direction that your human went.

Thirty Minutes Later...

You feel hot... But not too thirsty just yet. You know you need to save whatever water you have for emergencies at this point. That and you are plenty of carrots when you were with Jenni, so that means you have a lot of water already in your belly.

You then hear a voice calling out for you. Turning around, you don't see anyone there. Maybe your mind is playing tricks on you.

Female Armadillo: Little rabbit, over here.

You turn yourself around but again, you don't see anyone there. But then you see something that looks like a rock move a few feet behind you.

Female Armadillo: Over here little rabbit.

You then see a female armadillo unfold herself and you quickly go over to her.

Y/n: Oh hey.

Female Armadillo: Where are you walking to?

Y/n: Down the road, hopefully to civilization.

Female Armadillo: It'll take you hours before finding the humans civilization. But there is a town nearby called Dirt, you can stay there until you find yourself a ride back.

Y/n: Dirt? Okay uhh... Which way do I go?

Female Armadillo: Turn to your right and keep going straight. You'll reach a farm first but keep going.

Y/n: Alright, thank you. Uhh... But what about you? Where are you heading?

Female Armadillo: No where in particular little rabbit. But good luck crossing the road.

Y/n: The road? (You turn to see the road empty) I mean... I think I can cross the road without any trouble.

You look both ways before running across the road with no trouble at all. But when you turn around to see the female armadillo, she's no longer there. Looking around you don't see her anywhere. Maybe armadillos are fast.

Oh well, you listen to her advice and go straight. As you walk away the female armadillo reappears on the other side road where you were and looks at you.

Female Armadillo: Good luck on your journey little rabbit. I hope your new life goes well.

Then she smiles as her spirit fades away into the sky as you make your way through the desert.

One Hour Later...

You take a small sip of your water before putting it back in your bag and continue your journey. The female armadillo was right, there is a farm here. But this farm is a wasteland really. All the crops are dead and there's nothing growing.

Later seeing a big farmhouse nearby you walk towards it hoping that someone lives there. You kind of don't think someone lives there but it's best to see if someone does.

Walking up to the front porch you knock on the door and take a step back. The door then immediately swings open and a shotgun is pointed at you causing you to raise your hands up. Holding the other end of the gun is a reptile woman in a blue western-style dress.

???: What are you doing here on my land?!

Y/n: I-I'm here to know if I'm heading in the right direction to the town called Dirt.

The woman then points her gun down and stares at you from head to toe.

???: Not coming here to steal from me are you? Just who are you? (Raises her gun at you again)

Y/n: No no no, I'm not here to steal anything. My name is Y/n and I just need directions to town that's it.

???: You ain't from around here are you?

Y/n: N-No I'm front from here, I'm from Nevada and I was with my human going to-

???: Human?... Oh I get it now. You're one of them soft pets.

Y/n: I-I'm not sure if the word 'pet' describes me but technically yes.

She lowers her gun again but this time she carries it down to her waist with both hands.

???: Well alright, you can come with me then.

She walks past you and you staying apart from her by a few feet follow behind her.

Y/n: Uhh w-where?

???: I needed to get to town anyway, you can come with me.

Y/n: Oh uhh okay.

You follow her behind the house and she tells you to hop on her wagon while she puts her shotgun in the back. After getting her stuff ready she gets on and strikes the two ropes in front of her signaling for the weird-looking pig to move and it does.

Y/n: Um, thank you. I really appreciate this uh... what's your name?

Beans: Beans.

Y/n: Beans?

Beans: What can I say, my daddy plumb loved baked beans.

Y/n: D-Do you have any siblings?

Beans: Yes, but all ten of them fled town to live their own lives. Selfish pricks, abandoning our daddy's farm and everything he worked hard to keep. Leaving me to do everything round here, and now everyone wants my land but I'm NOT selling it for any dime that greedy son of bastard mayor wanna offer me.

Y/n: Man... I'm sorry to hear that.

Beans: And yourself? You were raised by a human? Assuming they kept you in cages your whole life.

Y/n: Oh no, not my human. She never put me in a cage.

Beans: I see.

Y/n: Though I... never saw my parents before, or siblings.

Beans: Well let me tell you something, I'd rather struggle and have freedom than live the luxury lifestyle with restrictions.

Y/n: Umm yeah...

Minutes Later...

You two finally make it to town and... it kind of looks like one of those abandoned western towns you've seen in movies. Every building is made out of wood and some of them even looked like they were ready to fall down at any second.

Beans: This town ain't what it used to be but...(sighs) it's still my home.

Y/n: Maybe one day it can go back to the way it was.

Beans: Yeah, best to keep a chin up right?

She then stops the wagon.

Beans: Well here's your stop Y/n.

You hop off her wagon and make sure your bookbag is still on your back.

Beans: Well... I might see you around later.

Y/n: Um yeah maybe, thanks again Beans.

She nods before taking off with her wagon again leaving you standing in the middle of the dirt road. Looking around... you don't know where to start looking. Should you look for a room to stay in? Or?...

???: Miss, Oh missy!

You turn to see an old brown rabbit lady with a white spot on her forehead. She gets up from her rocking chair and waves her hand trying to have you come closer. She does look friendly, so you walk over to her.

Y/n: (Smile) H-Hi.

???: My, I have never seen a new rabbit in this town. Please come in and join me for some tea.

Y/n: Oh uh o-okay.

She walks a little slow in front of you but you follow her into the building. You open the door for her and as you two walk in you see this must be an antique shop. Clothes, small furniture, dolls, rugs, books, toys, and more are either on the display or on shelves. Even the walls have big and small paintings.

Mrs. Belle: Oh mind my manners dear, I'm Mrs. Belle. This here is my shop and home.

Y/n: Nice to meet you. And wow, you have some beautiful items.

Mrs. Belle: Why thank you dear, I'm glad to know that someone even an outsider sees the beauty of old things.

She takes you to the back of the store where there are old couches and a rocking chair set up, must be the living room. She did say she also lives here, you wonder if she lives alone or if there's someone else here with her too.

Mrs. Belle: Please have a seat and I'll get the tea.

Y/n: O-Okay, and thank you Mrs. Belle.

Mrs. Belle: Aw it's no trouble, I love having company over. No one really comes here.

This made you feel a little bad for her, but at least having a cup of tea with her and chatting with her will make her feel better. That and maybe she can help you find a way to get back to human civilization.

You look around and see a bunch of handmade dolls made of yarn and fabrics hanging from the walls. Some of them... look a little creepy but surely this woman sees something in them that maybe you don't see.

The old woman comes back with two cups of tea and hands you one of the cups before sitting down on a rocking chair in front of you. You take off your sun hat and take a sip, it's cool and refreshing with a hint of mint.

Mrs. Belle: Tell me dear, what's your name? And where are you from? (Rocks back and forth in her rocking chair)

Y/n: My name is Y/n L/n and I'm from Nevada.

Mrs. Belle: Nevada?

Y/n: It's pretty far from here, but well... I got... stolen a-and umm...

You start to tear up, finally the weight of what just happened was starting to really take effect on you.

Y/n: I escaped but... I got left behind and now... I'm trying to find human civilization.

Mrs. Belle: Human civilization?... Ohh, I understand now. You belonged to a human yes?

Y/n: (Nod) Y-Yes.

Mrs. Belle: Ohh that explains why you're here. I'm terribly sorry to hear that dear.

Y/n: I-Its okay I umm...

Mrs. Belle: Then that means you don't have anywhere to stay do you?

Y/n: N-No...

Mrs. Belle: Then you're more than welcome to stay here, I do have a extra room for you.

Y/n: Oh I-I don't want to intrude or anything.

Mrs. Belle: No, it's not a problem at all Y/n. I could use the company and help running this shop. But I unfortunately can't pay you for your work here.

Y/n: Oh it's okay, just staying here is enough for me, and thank you so much Mrs. Belle. You're so kind.

Mrs. Belle: I'm glad to hear you accept. Now, first things first, you may want to put on a dress.

She gets up and heads to one of the racks of dresses.

Mrs. Belle: If the men see you dressed like that then they'll think you're promiscuous. Now I have some dresses here you may like. What about this one?

You stand up as she shows you a beautiful pink western dress. It's simple yet elegant, it kind of looks like a button-up shirt with a long skirt attached to the bottom but it's actually a one-piece dress. You walk up to her and take the dress.

Y/n: It's beautiful, I really like this one.

Mrs. Belle: Then it's yours, now go get dressed while I find the dust broom.

She's such a nice lady, you feel incredibly lucky meet her. And now you have a place to stay and a new attire to blend in. She helps you put on the dress and when your done you look at yourself in the mirror. You smile as you do a 360 twirl.

Y/n: It's beautiful.

Mrs. Belle: It is isn't it? Such a beautiful dress for a beautiful lady. Now for the boots.

She takes one of the pairs of boots from the display and brings them to you. Taking the boots, you put them down and take off your sandals before putting the light brown boots on.

Mrs. Belle: Now you look like a beautiful fair maiden. Is it alright if I brush your hair? I haven't brushed hair since my daughter moved away.

Y/n: Oh uh yeah.

She brushes your hair while you two sat on the couch. She told you many stories of her past when she was young and when she had children, all while brushing your hair. This does feel nice, she's being gentle with your hair as she tells you her stories.

But soon it got dark outside and she showed you to your new room. After saying goodnight you close the door and remove your new dress and boots. Out of curiosity, you open one of the drawers you see an old pajama dress. It's still clean so you decide to put it on.

You leave your bookbag by the bed and see this room has a balcony. Opening the doors you head out seeing a great view of the desert. It's kind of chilly out but you manage. Leaning against the wooden rail and your PJ dress and hair slowly flowing along with the wind you look up at the night sky.

So many shining stars and the bright full moon right above it all. Today's been one hell of a day, but you have hope. You came here and met a female farmer who was nice enough to bring you here and met a kind old rabbit woman who's letting you stay here. Even when things look rough right now you still need to have hope.

Main Owl: As the beautiful woman stares into the night, unaware of what tomorrow will bring. New animals to meet and realizing the situation this town's unfortunate enough to suffer from. She still keeps her head high for the future. But... something tells me, she's going to get more than she bargains for when she meets the certain animals keeping this town deprived of not just their water, but also their faith.
