You try to fight back, but it does not go well. You're quickly overwhelmed and subdued.
You're carted inside the mansion. "The intendant will decide what to do with you," the guard captain says.
They lead you into a library lined with bookshelves. You are dumped unceremoniously in front of the intendant's chair. The man wears voluminous, multicolored robes and a periwig somewhat in disarray atop his head, which he brushes aside as he speaks. "So, you're the rat we found crawling around outside my home," Vervaise says, with a toss of his head.
"Go on, then," he says. "Explain yourself."
First, I would put a question to you," the intendant says.
"Commissaire Vervaise—"
"Just one." He raises a jeweled finger. "I recognize you from my guards' description. I simply wish to know where we stand. Why did you drive away that crowd?" There is a haunted look in his eyes.
This strikes you as a pivotal question. You could try to hide what you truly believe, but that might prove dangerous. The intendant seems to have an incisive eye for character.
