A soothing melody came from Asher Ken's phone and he paused. He stretched out his hand and took the phone from the person next to him and placed it next to his ear.
After a long while, he simply said, "Alright. I'll be there."
After saying that, someone quickly opened the car door in front of him. "Mr. Kens, please."
He stepped forward and was about to get in the car when he suddenly remembered that Claire was standing there. He chuckled as he raised his head, and his eyes focused at a certain spot far away. As though he was speaking to himself, he said with a magnetic voice, "Claire Royce, right? Take her back and take care of her well. Don't mistreat her."
"Yes, Mr. Kens."
Claire would forever remember his words.
Everything happened simply because of his words.
Asher Kens had always been someone like that – with a flip of his hands, he could turn clouds to rain. He was only eighteen back then, yet he was already a sharpened sword. Even after so many years had passed, time would still bless him and make him even more refined.
Claire's fate changed completely ever since. She lived her life in luxury and extravagance, even more so than any other millionaire or celebrity.
Yet all he had left for her was his silhouette.
The vintage grandfather clock in the room chimed with a dull sound, which brought Claire out of her own thoughts.
It was already four in the evening.
Asher Kens… probably would not be here again.
Ever since she left the orphanage, she had never met him. She lived alone in the mansion, together with the butler, the housekeeper, the gardener, and the driver.
Asher had never stepped foot into the mansion.
There were a few occasions where Claire wanted to see him, but was repeatedly discouraged by the butler. However, Claire's curiosity toward Asher would not be so easily defeated. She went to the Kens Corporation without the butler's knowledge, yet in the end, she was sent back by Asher's assistant without meeting him.
Claire just could not understand. Why would Asher adopt her, yet refuse to see her? The butler even said he liked her? What nonsense.
Even if Asher just treated her like a pet, he should still take a look at it after such a long time. He should take a look for himself at what Claire had become. She would always score the highest in class, she learned how to dance, she could play the piano, and even aced in arts. She practically knew how to do everything.
Since it was her twentieth birthday, Claire thought to herself that the butler must have reported it and reminded him of her existence. He must have felt obligated to take a look after such a long time had passed.
Looking at how he had not appeared, he must have forgotten about her once again.
Claire thought to herself and chuckled. She leaned back against the couch and took a sip of water from the glass. Just then, she heard the servants outside say uniformly, "Mr. Kens."
Claire was stunned. The sip of water she just took suddenly got stuck in her throat, and she started choking. Her face turned red and she coughed violently.
'He's here? Is Asher Kens here? All of a sudden?'
She thought that… he would not show up.
The sound of his footsteps got nearer, and it made Claire's heart beat faster in her chest. She wanted to stop coughing, yet the more she tried to suppress her cough, the more violently she felt her throat constrict. She was choking so badly that she was in tears.
Claire felt that she was done for. If Asher saw her like this, then the preparations she made for today would all be in vain.
This was their first meeting.
She wanted to show Asher her most beautiful side, simply because, in her heart, Asher was someone completely out of her reach.
