Chapter 17 - Leaving The Palace

Dessa smiled as she figourously rubbed makeup on her face. Dressed in a commoner's clothing she was eager to leave the palace and find out more about the ritual sites she had read about in Zamien's record. It was great that the former hadn't been in the palace for the past 2 days and Dessa could do whatever she wanted.

She left her room in her little disguise, not forgetting to stuff her bed with pillows. She had never been in Rhodes prior to her wedding so she needed someone to help her out a bit, so off to the kitchen she went, hoping to find a friend in one of the maids.

"Hello, I'm Sarahi, the new maid." Dessa said to the servants she found in the kitchen.

"Ahh, Rochelle must have brought you by, I am Felina, the head cook. I was in need of an assistant and that is your role." Said a bulky woman with yellow eyes. Dessa felt weird looking at such a woman and knowing that all the food she ate or will eat in the future would be prepared by such a piggy looking lady.

Sighing she said, "I am not a palace maid, I have come with the crown princess from Rocenko. She has ordered me to leave the palace in search of pretty things to lighten up her mood. I need one of the palace maids to guide me."

She watched as the faces of the women all changed from shock to contempt to fear under a few seconds and she realized just how unloved she was in her husband's palace. Not that she cared anyway, she smiled a pompous smile, like a slave very proud of the master she was serving, knowing full well that the maids were afraid of the 'Crown Princess'.

"Venesa, follow her." Felina said and the Venesa in question snorted before walking out to lead the way. Dessa smiled a crafty smile, vowing to punish the girl when she came back.

Outside the palace, Dessa was even more surprised to find that this part of Rhodes was better looking than the capital she had seen. The people actually looked alive and everyone she met eyes with were quite normal. She noticed that just as in the capital there were soldiers everywhere, but the soldiers here didn't seem to hold killing intent in their eyes, if they did, they hid it very well.

"You can find the market if you walk to your left for a few minutes, you'll find a lot of pretty things there. I have things to do." The maid she came with, Venesa said, walking the other way to join a bunch of boys.

Unbothered, Dessa went to a secluded place where she was sure no one could see her and chanted an invisibility spell. The spells she could chant were limited as she was not a witch but it also affected her negatively whenever she chanted a spell. She put all of this at the back of her mind and walked all the way to the forest.
