The next day, I woke up to a knock on my door.
I woke up with an annoyed grunt and opened the room door.
There, my mom stood holding an Amazon box.
Excited, I grabbed it out of her hands and thanked her. I closed my door and opened the box on my bed. As if all tiredness left my body, I ripped off the tape.
Inside the box was a small plastic box with the picture of contacts on them. The other had the photo of a voice changer.
It was small enough to fit in my mask, so I was thankful for that.
After unboxing everything, I tried everything on but the contacts on.
It took me ten minutes. Ten whole minutes. Quite a long time. But it was worth it. I looked into the mirror at the corner of the room.
The purple and black jester costume with the white clown mask was a great combination. My voice changer was in my mask as well, but I had to download a voice from their website.
Once I was done playing around, I u dressed and changed into blue sweats, a black shirt, and a blue zip-up sweater.
I neatly put away my costume and walked to my living room.
It was ten in the morning, and I was hungry. Luckily, my mom was already making breakfast, so while she cooked, I sat on the couch going through my phone.
I opened snapchat and looked through all the messages.
None of the messages were important. It was just sending pictures back and forth.
Then, suddenly, I got a new message. It was from Alessia.
[What's up.]
[Not much. You?]
It took a minute for her to reply.
[I'm about to go to the movies with the girls. You wanna come? I'm pretty sure your friends are coming as well.]
'Hmm, should I go? I still have to download a voice, buy a phone and search for homeless people.'
As I was contemplating whether I was going to go, Alessia sent another message.
[it's gonna be a horror movie.]
[Sure. What time do you want me to be there?]
Horror was my favorite genre.
[Be here in like two hours.]
[Alright. See you then.]
After the brief conversation, I left the app and scrolled through the news.
'Building burnt to the ground.'
That was the title of the article. Interested, I read it.
The article was basically about how a building burnt to the ground. There was only one death, but many were injured. They blame the fire on someone leaving the oven on but they said they didn't know for sure. After all, it was in the middle of the night. Few are awake that long.
'Pretty sad.'
The thought of having your home destroyed and not having warranty is dreadful.
Silently giving them my prayers, I got up and made my way to the chairs at the table.
The food was done.
"Damian, Santiago. Come to the table!"
"Already here."
My mom jumped back and looked at me before laughing. "Fuck. Your steps are too light."
"What can I say? I'm a ninja."
My mom and I joked around until my brother came to the table. The three of us sat down and quietly ate.
"Sucks dad has work on a weekend."
My mom, seeing the sad look on Santiago's face, smiled lightly and told us he'd be back by four.
We continued eating until all our plates were clean.
After the delicious breakfast, I asked my mom if I could go out.
"Sure go ahead."
"Can I come?"
"Sure. We're leaving in two hours."
My brother and I then took turns taking showers. After a nice, relaxing shower, I got dressed.
I put on beige cargo pants, a black shirt, and an oversized black hoodie. I also wore accessories. There were two bracelets on my wrist. One silver and one gold. I had gotten these for my 14th birthday from my parents. I cherished these so much that I even had them on when I died.
Once we were dressed, the two of us sat with my mom on the couch, watching a drama with her.
Before we knew it, almost an hour had already passed by.
Saying goodbye to our mom, we left the apartment and walked to the train station.
β
A thirty-minute train ride later, we arrived at the mall's station.
We walked up a few flights of stairs, and we were already inside the mall.
There were still thirty minutes until we had to meet the group. So, to kill time, my brother and I walked around and window shopped.
By the time the thirty minutes passed by, I already found a few things I wanted to buy. New shoes, gloves, and a pocket watch.
These were all things I thought could elevate my jester persona.
Anyway, once it was 12, we walked to the movie theatre and bought the tickets for the horror movie we were going to see.
Walking inside, we waited at the arcade inside the theatre for the others to arrive.
We didn't have to wait long.
Not even five minutes later, the group walked towards us.
We greeted everyone and made our way to the room the movie was supposed to be.
Everyone went different ways. We all split into smaller groups. In the end, I was left with my brother. Even Alessia was beside Danny and Sofia.
'I guess it makes sense.'
Alessia and I were still friends, but the rejection wasn't too long ago. If we sat together during a movie, especially a horror one, it would complicate things.
While waiting for the movie to start, my brother and I talked.
"How's school going? You got a girlfriend?"
My brother's cheeks turned red as he shook his head. "No. I don't. What about you? I saw that blonde staring at you and checking you out. Are you dating her?"
I laughed at how flustered he got. "Haha. Nah. We're not dating. Just friends."
"Really? You could've fooled me. Look behind you."
I turned around and saw Alessia and the two beside her looking at us. Once they saw that, I noticed them; they turned their heads away.
I shrugged my shoulders, not knowing how to respond to my brother.
"Anyway. Let me know when you get a girlfriend. I'll give you some money."
Santiago's eyes lit up.
"I have a girlfriend."
"Do you really? When and what school?"
"Start of this year and goes to my school."
"What's her name?"
"Diana."
"By the way. I'm not giving you money. Hahaha"
I tricked my poor little brother and laughed in his face.
He punched me in the arm and got bright red, making me laugh harder.
Not long after that, the movie started. My brother and I stopped joking around and put all of our attention on the screen. We both loved horror movies. So I knew I wouldn't have to worry about distractions.
β-
The movie was amazing. It was scary, and the plot was good. Not something most horror movies have.
The two of us got out of our seats and walked out of the theatre.
Outside, both of us sat on a ledge and talked about how good the movie was.
Eventually, the other came down.
"Good movie right?"
Ivan, like us, loved horror.
"Yeah, that little fight scene was cool too."
"What do you guys wanna do? Eat?"
Danny, who seemed hungry, suggested.
Everyone agreed, and we made our way to the cafeteria.
Everyone went different ways because of their tastes. My brother, Alessia, and I stood in line for the Chinese food.
"What's your name again?"
My brother asked Alessia while taking a glance at me.
'I hope he says nothing stupid.'
"Alessia. You're Santiago right?"
"Yessir. So, did you like the movie?"
"Kinda. I'm not really into horror."
My brother, exaggerating, put his hand on his chest and gasped.
"How. Horror is the best genre."
"Fantasy and action are better."
"You're like my dad. Haha"
"You're like my grandma."
I watched the two fight and sighed. 'So childish.'
"Guys. Let's not argue in public. We still have to order our food."
"Damian. What genre do you think is better?"
Alessia, clearly not giving up the battle, asked me.
"Horror by miles is better."
My brother burst out laughing.
"Why would you ask him? He likes horror more than I do."
"Whatever."
Alessia stopped arguing and turned away. She then walked forwards and ordered her food since she was next in line.
It didn't take long for us to all get out food.
Since we figured most of the people in our group would like to eat with their partners, the three of us walked around to find a seat without letting them know.
Luckily, we found a spot near the door leading outside.
We sat down and started eating.
"So, Alessia. Are you and my brother dating?"
Alessia, who was sipping on her drink, almost choked.
*cough
"Excuse me?"
"Are you and my brother dating?"
"Santiago."
I couldn't let my brother tease a girl he wasn't close with. That was rude. So I had to step in.
"No. We're not dating."
My brother nodded his head and started eating again.
The next ten minutes were quiet. After bringing dating up, none of us knew what to say. It was awkward.
After we finished eating, Santiago left for the game store, leaving me and Alessia alone.
"I'm sorry about him."
"No, it's fine."
We both looked at each other and laughed.
"It's been really awkward, hasn't it?"
Alessia nodded and spoke. "It really has."
"How's it been? I've asked you over text but it's better to ask in person."
Alessia smiled and responded. "It's been good. I cried for a day, but after that, I got better."
"Sorry."
"Haha. Don't worry. I thought it over and you were right. We're still young and I wouldn't want to ruin an amazing friendship over a breakup.
How's your business going?"
"It's going well. I've made a good amount and have already bought some things I've wanted for a while."
It was like the rejection never happened.
Though Alessia was younger than me mentally, it was nice talking to her. She had a friendly aura around her and was easy to get along with.
We talked for over thirty minutes. About what, I don't know. Time just seemed to fly.
However, we eventually had to stop. My brother called, and we had to meet the others.
β-
Our group walked around for two more hours before we left.
No one bought anything but me. I bought the black gloves I saw earlier.
Once I got home, I placed my gloves on my table before taking a shower.
After the shower, I changed into shorts and a white shirt. I then opened my new laptop and searched for a phone I could buy. I went on the website 'Resell' and searched through the technology section.
My luck has been on a roll lately. Not even fifteen minutes in, I had already messaged a guy for an iPhone eight and set up a meeting with him for tomorrow after school. Since it was used and a pretty old model, I was able to negotiate the price down to $250.
But I still had a problem. I needed to learn how to post on the dark web.
Thankfully, I had the perfect person to teach me. My computer teacher.
With all my problems gone, and a smile plastered on my face, I ended the day thinking about how rich I'll be when I finally start the fight club.
'I'll make sure the name Jester is known to everyone.'
