Chapter 22 - Student troubles

It was finally the weekend and it was about time Milles started his real work. He had thought about delaying his work a lot but there had been no point.

Not to mention, he needed more resources to break into the neural system's inner network and maintain its functions. That was why he had decided to start this work - to help earn more money.

He was just lucky that Miss Irene had decided not to ask him questions when Milles worked on his own thing.

"Have you really fixed it? Really, really fixed it?" for now, the student in front of Milles was his top priority. She was a testament to how far his name had managed to spread.

"It is fixed so stop asking again and again. You can try it out if you don't believe me" his voice came out a lot lower than his original pitch and Milles patted himself on the back for his forethought.

The senior student in front of him activated her system and instantly cast a fire spell Milles was familiar with.

"System, activate magic sequence A-2"

[Magic sequence A-2 activated successfully. Fire Spin]

There was a small fire tornado and the female's face lit up in delight. The spell was familiar but the practical application seemed different to Milles.

"Thank you. I was so afraid I would have to explain this to Mrs. Emma and I had no excuse. That teacher hates me and I don't know why. Well, I do know why but it's not my fault. It's Xion's. Anyway, thanks" The female's enthusiasm was a little overwhelming.

Milles did not mind it much but he was also afraid of the miniature magical fire tornado in her hand. He backed away carefully so that the fire would not hurt him.

It was not like the female's words did not interest him. The name 'Xion' was enough to pick at his curiosity but Milles would rather remain curious than face the female with her fire tornado.

"I'm glad to help but maybe you should put the fire away first? You can harm someone with it" the hallway was empty of people and no one should come here anytime soon.

That was why Milles had chosen this place today.

"Ah yeah sure. Just give me a minute and who, I almost dropped it again" Milles felt his heart get caught up in his throat as the phone slipped out of the senior's hands.

But her fast reflexes managed to catch the phone in mid-air and she twisted her body to correct herself again.

A disaster had been prevented just now.

"Sorry, I'm rather clumsy. By the way, is it not uncomfortable? To be in your disguise all the time? Transformation magic can be draining on one's body" Milles sighed at the question.

The senior was his third customer since he had started this trade.

He had managed to slip a small rumor on the school network about someone who could repair anything for a price but most students had chosen not to believe those words.

However, one senior had dared approach Milles three days later to get her phone repaired. It had been easy enough for Milles but he had decided not to use his real appearance.

He had asked the neural system to prepare a disguise for him. It was a lot of magical exposure and headaches but his body could bear the burden because of his connection to the neural system.

But this question had been asked by his first customer.

And his second.

And apparently by his third as well. They just could not seem to mind their own business.

"Don't worry about it. You should be more careful with your phone" Milles had not only decided to repair her phone but to upgrade it as well. The student would not likely notice the enhancement in technology but Milles had taken it as a challenge.

It was also practice for him to enhance his magical capabilities and Milles was happy to note that his idea had worked. His control had improved significantly ever since he started.

"Wow, it's smooth. Did you do anything more than upgrade it?" the senior turned around in awe as she used her new phone but Milles was gone already.

After all, his charm would only last as long as he could maintain his mysterious status quo.

Official classes would start from the next Monday and it was also the time for the fourth year to return.

The knowledge of that made Milles somewhat nervous. The mention of Xion was everywhere and it made Milles wonder just how powerful that person was.

Milles had tried to get her information out of the neural system but his limitations of technology had failed him. System Study lab had a better set-up but it was monitored by Mrs. Irene.

Milles didn't want to get her on his case as well. And then there was the pup he had picked up.

"Oi, your pup is at it again. You should leash him up when you go out. Or at least, put some anti-magic cuffs on him. What is even he? A scientific experiment?" a roommate complained as he ran out of the dorm building.

Milles could only sigh at the smoke coming out of the building and all the fire alarms going off around the dorm.

It had been like this for the past few days and everyone was habitual to this.

"You know I can't. It would just chew through the leash anyway. What set him off this time? Loud noises? Someone knocking on my door? Anything else?" the thing about having a magical dog was that Milles had to be careful.

Once Mrs. Irene had registered Fenrir as a teacher's aid, Milles no longer needed to hide him.

But Fenrir was not a normal pup and was prone to accidental magic anytime he was spooked. Milles had already gotten three warnings about this topic and that meant only one thing.

"Please report in the principal's office, Mr. Raycraft. I know it is not your fault but you were the one responsible for that teacher's aid" and there came the dorm supervisor.

Actually, Milles had expected this to happen a while back. Every since the pup had shown signs of being magically inclined, Milles had been counting down his days.

And now it was finally time to go back to the principal's office.

"Can I take the pup along?" Milles asked tiredly. He did not want to go back to the principal's office but there seemed to be no choice there.

"Yes, take that devil as well" a roommate cried before the supervisor could. Most of his dormmates agreed with the speaker.

And there was no getting out of this now.

So Milles braved the smoke and entered the building. The door to his dorm was closed but Milles could see the smoke coming from inside.

He opened and readied himself for any kind of sight he would see.

But the smoke made it impossible to see. It burned at his eyes as well but it was not hot. It was just difficult to navigate and burned at his throat.

"Fenrir, come out here. I'm not angry at you but worried" Milles called out in a soft voice. He was annoyed at the pup but getting angry would spook the pup.

The pup came running out the very next second and Milles caught him.

The pup was hot and it hurt Milles but it was bearable. The pup was the one smoking and as soon as Milles took him out, the smoke started to clear up.

"Is the pup on fire? Here, let me try to cool it. System, activate the sequence W-4" Milles opened his mouth to protest against the spell but it was too late.

[Magic sequence W-4 activated. Water cloak activated]

Milles was wet and the pup in his arms was wet as well. But the smoke was still coming out and the pup was even hotter now.

Milles chanced a look down, only to find an annoyed pup in his arms. The feeling of wet fur in his arms was not pleasant but Milles help on to the pup.

It would attack the dorm in charge the second he let go. They had a love-hate relationship after all.

"No effect, huh? Maybe we should try stronger magic" the dorm in charge commented but Milles stepped between them with his back to the dorm in charge.

"No. No more magic spells for now. I have a place to be in right now so I will take my leave" Milles had already gotten caught up in one spell, he had no intention of getting caught up in another.

The students around him laughed at his plight but no one offered to help him out. There was a gap between them and Milles which only widened at Milles's inability to socialize with his age mates.

And then Milles was in front of the principal's office again, but this time, he was drenched.

Somehow, he had managed to end up here more times in a week now than he had in a year when he had been a troubled kid.

Milles knocked on the door and waited for confirmation from the other side.

"You can come in now" and Milles entered the office once more. His fourth time in this week.
