Chapter 24 - Danger

The pup was a constant weight in Milles's arms but even he could not stop the panic originating inside Milles's mind.

The thought of a mentor did not sit well with him at all, especially one being provided by the principal. Milles had plans he needed to carry out and having someone keep tabs on him all the time was not a part of his plans in any way, shape, or form.

He had been here for an hour already and Milles had yet to pick up his phone and connect to the neural system.

Mainly because the principal had taken to look his way a few times in between his work and Milles was sure the principal was keeping tabs on him.

It was finally in the second hour of Milles being in the principal finally decided to put his work away and turn toward the door. There was a nervous tick in his arm, one that made Milles tense up as well.

The principal was trying to hide it but he was nervous as well.

"You can come straight in" the door opened and a serious-looking teen came in with a very familiar face. She had to be around sixteen was walked with her back rim-straight.

Just her mere presence there gave Milles a headache as well as heartache. It felt as if he had stepped back in time to when he had been younger.

"Xion, you certainly made your way here fast. Did you even check-in before hopping here?" the principal asked the serious-looking lady.

[Xion Raycraft, the official leader of the Witch clove and the likely candidate for the seat of president]

Great, so this was the same Xion Milles had been thinking about. The one who was his adopted sister.

Maybe it was the universe's way of kicking him down by giving this female the same face as his sister, Maria.

"Nah. I will check-in once I'm done here. By the way, where is he? My new student. Is she cute? How old? Is she of age?" Whatever illusion Milles had of Xion broke once she opened her mind.

Never in a thousand years could anything think that such a bubbly voice would come out of that cold expression. Xion's face was still cold and unmoving, but her eyes held a light in them.

The female was full of life and excitement.

"No, Xion. It's not a female but a guy" and whatever excitement that was contained in Xion's face drained at those words. Her expression went back to cold and unfeeling.

But Milles knew that face and the small expressional changes it could go through. Xion was not cold, but disappointed and a little pouty as well.

Her next words just confirmed Milles's theory.

"Ah, I see. If that's the case then I don't want this student. You can keep him or throw him to another teacher. I am a rather busy person" Xion complained the same way his sister has used to and it brought a twig of pain to Milles's heart.

That face, that behavior, it all felt as if it had stepped out of a time frame from his past.

"Xion, please. I would not have called for you had it not been an emergency. Mr. Raycraft here really needs your support" Milles saw Xion's eyes narrow at his name. There was annoyance in her eyes but the interest as well.

The principal had successfully managed to gather her interest.

"I don't want to. I would rather spend time doing missions" her tone spoke one thing but she could not hide her interest from Milles.

The principal was shooting Milles looks that clearly asked Milles to take action. But they never specified what kind of actions Milles should be taking.

Also, Milles had well well-trained self-preservation instincts. Xion exerted magical pressure unlike anything Milles had seen and Milles had no intention of forcing her to turn on him.

Besides, he did not want a mentor. Having a mentor would only hinder Milles from getting his work done in secret.

But that was all Milles. The pup in his arms had other ideas about this and he had clearly decided that he did not like Xion.

"Fenrir, no" Milles tried to catch the pup before he could attack Xion but his body failed him. His reflexes were fast enough to stop the pup before he leaped.

And then there was a fire inside the office.

The pup had lit itself aflame and decided that Xion's leg would make a fine delicacy. Those underdeveloped teeth were logged into the female's legs.

And a lot of things happened at the same time.

Xion went pale, her eyes wide with fear and Milles only had a few seconds to make his way to her and pick the pup up before the building was shaking.

The principal looked pale as well but he was better composed than Milles and had his phone in hand.

[Warning notice: Please evacuate the building premises at once]

Milles did not hesitate as soon as the message came. Xion was freaking out and it was causing some kind of reaction.

Magical redaction.

Milles had no intention of getting caught up in the aftermath of such a thing so he ran away from the building as soon as he could.

The outside corridor was in a mass panic over the small earthquake but the safety precautions were working just fine. The building had magical ruins to safeguard human lives.

Milles marveled at the advancement of technology and the unique usage of the ruins before he felt a small shove in his back.

Yeah, he should keep moving if he did not want to get buried beneath the rubble. The pup yelped to be let down but Milles held him tight.

"Milles, this way" Milles heard the principal call and followed the other outside. This was all a mess and had likely been caused by the pup in his arms as well.

"What happened? Why did she freak out like that?" Milles asked once he was close enough to the principal. He had a suspicion about why things had happened like they had but he could not say anything for sure.

His sister had a phobia of canines due to childhood reasons.

But Xion was not Maria and Milles had to make sure he would not confuse those two in his mind again. He was in the future and Xion had shown no indication of recognizing him despite him having the same face.

There was no way Xion was Maria. Or at least, have her memories.

"I forgot that Xion has a phobia of canines. It doesn't come up much and is not recorded in her general file so I simply forgot about it. Thinking back at it, maybe it was not the best idea to ask Xion to help you out" the principal sounded more amused than scared.

Milles got a feeling that the principal was recording all his interactions and was going to make use of them later on. He just seemed like the type of guy who would do that.

By this time, other departments and specialists had decided to check the site out as well. And among them was Mrs. Emma in all her serious glory.

She was also the only one brave enough to approach the principal and look him straight in the eye.

"Principal, what happened. We felt the shaking and decided to check out" her voice was cold but unyielding. She did not flinch away from the old man when he tried to glare her down.

"I'm afraid I made a mistake and now Xion freaked out. I guess this is the part I leave it up to you" the principal gestured to Milles and the pup in his arms.

Understanding flashed in Mrs. Emma's eyes.

Understanding and a flash of guilt. Milles did remember the other inside the office when he had brought the pup in. maybe she knew about Xion and her situation but had not been aware of the pup.

"You and I will have a talk about it later. Right now, I have someone to calm down" it felt as of the last words were let out of Mrs. Emma's mouth with difficulty.

Heer expression looked as if she had swallowed something sour. Mrs. Emma did not wait for the principal to give her a 'go ahead.'

Not that the old man looked troubled at the lack of respect. His eyes looked as if he had found a new source of entertainment.

Whatever that was about, Milles wanted to have nothing to do with it.

"I shall go back to my room now" Milles hurried away as the principal was not looking. The pup in his arms was behaving for now but Milles had a feeling that it would not be long before he would go back to his disobedient self.

His room would be a safe place for them for the time being.

After all, Milles wanted to be left alone for a little while and gather his thoughts. Also, think of a new plan to make money.
