"I can't even imagine," Casey murmured sympathetically. "I'm sorry this is happening to you, Vera."
Vera slumped in her seat, the fight draining out of her. "Thanks."
Having someone show her concern meant a lot. She might not be all alone in this after all, even if it was incredibly embarrassing having a former client know what was going on with her.
"Is there a-anything I can do?" he asked hesitantly.
She really didn't want to inconvenience him but she also really didn't want to be alone right now. She was scared.
"I've already inconvenienced you enough today," she said with a sigh.
"No, you're fine! If there's something I can do—"
"Do you mind staying here for a while?"
Vera blurted that out and immediately felt stupid for doing so but it was too late to take it back. At least Casey didn't seem to be judging her for it. He was momentarily surprised but agreed quickly.
"O-of course. But…um…c-can I go put my laundry away first and g-get a book to read?" Casey asked.
