"What you see is real and is not," the Nymph explained as we approached the gate. There wasn't any sign of the door's edges, and I hadn't seen anyone open it, though most of the people who'd gone in front of me were gone. So far, none had ended up on the wall.
"How does this work?" I stare at the cup of water and the flower.
"You drink it," Smiling brightly, she took the flower from me and expertly plucked all the petals from it, adding them to the cup. Part of me wanted to protest destroying the honeysuckle, but what excuse could I give her? "And once every drop is drained, you'll place your hand on the doors. If you can face your fears, you'll go through. If you cannot… then we'll move you aside and allow others to try."
It sounded so simple, but it wasn't.
