Chapter 16 - Chapter 13: No Magic!?

That was close.

Too close for comfort.

Father almost saw me coming out of the trees. It was a good thing I was able to escape before he realized that the one who was watching him was me.

Still, that attack was amazingly powerful! Didn't he just wipe out more than a hundred monsters, some of whom looked much stronger than an average knight!? What a crazy sword technique people made during the time gap between my lives.

Also, what did he call it?

Sacred Sword: Light Surge?

According to the name and the scene I just witnessed, it really does live up to its name. Plus, that amount of light can only be made with magic, right? Does that mean that father has the rare light attribute?

Wow.

I really am born into a family whose strength is very high. Hopefully, I was able to inherit that strength. Also, I haven't done a proper analysis of my body, have I? I will make sure I do that, after, I learn how to do Sacred Sword: Light Surge.

Yes.

I am planning on learning that sword technique. It has an amazing amount of power that could be useful when I am fighting. Even if I don't have the light attribute, I can just learn the action so that I can confuse the enemy into thinking I can use it. Yeah, it will be own distraction technique!

Anyway, I should head back to the Adventurer's Guild. I should just try to learn more about this age while I am there. I still have some spare time before I need to go back home. The real question here is what should I read about while I am there?

Hmm.

I should be reading books that are related to magic, combat training tips, monsters, and overall information about society while I am there. However, I don't think that I will be able to read them all because I am still a kid that needs to come home to sleep.

Oh yeah!

Maps as well. I can't forget about looking at what the world looks like and making my own copies of them so that I can find potential places where the ruins of the Divine Beasts are. Speaking of Divine Beasts, I should also read fairy tales and records of them so I can get a clue as to what they are, where they are, and how to confront them.

While thinking about the different things I might be able to learn, I walk towards the gate. I check if there are still guards there.

Nope.

No one is there.

Yup.

Just as expected.

All of the knights left for the expedition. Probably because the guards at the gate are only for killing any monster that gets close and that is exactly what the expedition team is doing.

Alright!

Adventurer's Guild, here I come!

********************

I finally arrived at the Guild.

It took me a lot of time because I wanted to inform my mother that I have come back. I needed to because I was able to see father and his expedition because I was a little impatient when I was waiting for mother.

So, I ran out without waiting and went to the area where father was. During that time, my mother came back home and didn't find me there. Of course, when I went back, I had to tell her I was safe and that I was sorry for not waiting for her.

After that, I ate a late lunch and ran to the Guild when I finally finished.

That was a brief summary of what happened to me.

Okay.

Let's go in!

*Clank*

Wow.

Just as much activity as the last time I went in.

No.

Actually, I think there is even more commotion than before. I wonder what has happened?

Oh well.

I shouldn't mind them.

I calmly walk towards the receptionist.

"Hello!"

"Yes?"

"How much for staying in the room where all of the books, maps, and documents are?"

"Do you mean the Information Room?"

"Yes. I want to stay inside of it"

"O-okay. Let's see... It is 15 Silver."

Okay.

15 Silver, huh.

I plunge my hand into my pocket and grab one of the Gold coins that are inside of it. I then hand it towards the receptionist.

"Is this amount okay?"

"Y-yes it is."

"Good. Make sure that no one else comes in while I am inside."

"We can't do that. Other people might need it."

Hmm.

I tried to make sure that no one will be able to interrupt me.

That is ok.

"Ok. That is fine."

With those words, I look around for a clue as to where the room is.

There!

Some stairs are in the left corner of the Guild. I walk towards them and slowly climb up the stairs. At the end, I see a door. Let's see how much I'll have to read. I open it and see an entire room literally filled to the brim with books.

Oh my god!

Looks like I am going to have a tight schedule.

Okay.

For this trip, I will isolate all of the books that are related to magic and sword training. The next time I come, I will try to read all of the books about monsters. On my third visit, I will copy some maps and find records that are about the Divine Beasts.

There.

Let's grab some books about magic.

********************

Okay.

I found only a few books about it. All of them say 'For Intermediate-ranked users' and 'For Expert-ranked users'. Since I am not one of the people the books described, I took the book that is titled 'Magic Basics'.

I flip open the book.

Let's see.

'All magic is powered by energy. We call this energy 'Mana'. Most living things in this world have it. Humans are the exception. While an estimated 90% of the population have Mana, the other 10% doesn't.'

It has been interesting so far.

'However, Mana is just the fuel for magic. To use magic, you also need one other thing to activate it. This thing is called an 'attribute'.'

Magic is much more complicated than I thought. So, magic is kind of like a candle, right? The Mana is the wax of the candle. The attribute is the match. When you put them together, the resulting flame is magic. If you don't have 1 of them, you can't use magic. I get it now.

'There are 6 different attributes. These attributes are: Flame, Ocean, Earth, Wind, Light, and Shadow. The first 4 are common attributes while the other 2 are much rarer. In addition, each attribute has a 'sub-branch' that are more powerful than the main one. They are: Lava, Glacier, Quake, Thunder, Nova, and Void.'

Oh!

Now, that is cool. Aside from the main 6 attributes, they each have a rarer, more powerful sub-branch. I can't wait to find out how they know what kind of attributes a person has! I flip through the pages until I find the one that is titled 'How To Know If You Have Mana Or An Attribute'.

'A test for Mana that has always proved correct was formulated during the Year 69 of the 4th Calendar.'

Calendar 4? I guess that means the number of the Hero which died. So, that means I live in the 6th Calendar.

'The test is a rather simple one. A person must think of the words 'Generate Mana' in their heads and their body will start to glow for a few seconds. This test works on people from 4 to the end of one's life. The reason for this is as of yet unknown but, has been confirmed to be correct by an Analysis Stone.'

Okay?

Generate Mana.

...

No glow?

There has to be a mistake somewhere!

I grab every spell book in the room and find the incantations for the element of every magic, including the sub-branch incantations.

Nothing.

No reaction at all.

Wait, doesn't this mean that I have no Mana and no attributes!? I am pretty sure that I had the Shadow attribute and at least some Mana when I was Zeta!

No way.

Hey, Death God.

This is a joke, right?

...

Right?

********************

That was the day I learned that I wouldn't be able to learn magic for the rest of my life. I was pretty sad at that time. However, when I learned why I can't use it, I smiled a bit.
