Chapter 37 - The Dead Frontier (29)

"Okay girl, wait for me here"

Glen got off Gisebelle and looked towards the sunset. His thoughts were a mess. He knew that he couldn't escape his past, but he had never thought he would implicate Ezekiel in the process.

He didn't know the exact inside story, but he suspected the attack yesterday was deliberate and was aimed at him. Ezekiel was only caught in the crossfire.

Glen tightened the glove on his left hand with his teeth, making sure it was secure. After taking one last deep breath he also pulled up his green scarf to cover his face and started to walk towards his destination.

The sun was already setting behind him but there was still no sign of Wesley. Honestly, he had too many things he wanted to ask. Like why?

Why did he join the Church of Night and destroyed the city they built together? Weren't they brothers? Wasn't that their dogma? Even if one day you leave the gang, you should never betray your brothers!

Funnily enough, the first person that broke this rule was also the person that Glen trusted the most.

"You are finally here"

As the sun finally set behind him, Glen finally met Wesley. He was sitting on a boulder, waiting for his arrival.

After all these years he still looked the same. Except for his eyes, they had an eerie crimson glow to them.

"Where is the kid Wesley!?" Glen shouted towards him.

All of the questions that brewed in his heart for years could wait. The kid's safety triumphed any question he could have asked.

"Really? Is that really what you want to ask?"

His voice contained a mocking tone. Glen's breathing started to get faster. Of course, that was not the only thing he wanted to ask!

After taking a deep breath Glen gave his answer "...Everything else can wait."

He couldn't get agitated. He was deep inside the enemy territory and there was no way he was going to get out alive. Glen knew even before setting a foot in this place. But why would that be a concern to him? He was immortal anyway. This life was also getting kind of stale so it was okay to end it prematurely like this.

But Ezekiel was different. He had only one life and he still had a bright future ahead of him. Humanity was finally pushing back the zombies, the apocalypse was about to end. Glen couldn't let him die when they were so close to the finish line.

"Bring him"

Two men appeared behind Wesley and between them stood Ezekiel. His hands were tied behind his back and there was a gag on his mouth. Seeing him still safe and sound Glen was relieved. He was actually scared that Ezekiel was already dead and Wesley only used him to bring Glen here.

"Don't worry kid, everything is going to be okay, I will get you out of here like always"

Ezekiel just nodded. From his expression, Glen could tell that he was ashamed but there was no doubt in his eyes. He was sure that Glen would save him just like he promised.

Wesley laughed at the pair's sappy reunion.

"Is that so? How are you planning to do that?"

Amidst his snickering Wesley asked such a question. Glen felt like something was wrong with Wesley. The one he knew would never laugh like this. It felt like he had... gone mad?

Glen put his hand on the navy's holster "By killing you of course!"

"Amazing... how can you still be so..."

Wesley's laughs kept getting louder and louder. It felt like he had heard the biggest joke in his life.

"What? Handsome? Amazing? Brave?"

He tried to play it off as a joke but Glen's instincts were warning him. Something about Wesley was creeping him out. This was the first time he had such a strong feeling towards someone. Why? What was so special about him?

"...Arrogant. Why aren't you ruined yet? NO! WHY ARE YOU STILL ALIVE!?"

Wesley finally stopped laughing and just screamed towards him. His voice carried a ghastly tone like one that belonged to a demon. Goosebumps appeared all over Glen's body.

"Oh? Are you disappointed that you couldn't finish the job back then? Well, you were never a good shot anyway. Speaking of which, why? Why did you betray all our brothers?"

It was too late to back out now. He didn't know if he wanted to hear the answer to this question but the words had already left his mouth. Hopefully, he wouldn't regret asking this.

Wesley gathered himself and started to smile again. His change was so fast that Glen even doubted if he was the same person that screamed at him just now.

"Right... you still don't know yet... do you want to hear a story?"

As Glen looked for a way out he noticed the zombies crawling towards them. They were slowly getting surrounded. Wesley frantic laughter and shouts must have attracted them. He needed to think of a way to getaway. He needed time.

"Sure, partner. I am all ears but you might want to be fast. We don't have all day"

Wesley chuckled " Don't worry, it shouldn't take long... Now, where should I start?"

As Wesley kept hitting his chin with the muzzle of his gun a zombie jumped towards Glen!

Glen was about to draw his gun and blow its brain out when something unimaginable happened. The zombie just froze and stopped moving. He frowned and turned towards Wesley. Amidst the darkness, Glen could see the tattoo of a snake glowing at the back of his hand. It gave off a crimson light just like his eyes.

What was going on? Something supernatural? But how!?

"Don't bother with our guest... Right, I should start with an introduction. My name is Wesley Sutton. Son of Wiley 'Hollow' Sutton"

Glen couldn't wrap his head around this...

"What does this have anything to do with this?"

"It has EVERYTHING TO DO WITH THIS!!!!!"

Wesley started to become unstable again. It felt like he was holding himself back from just rushing over and separating Glen's head from his torso.

"... haha... of course, you wouldn't understand. You were always the golden child..."

"You see, my mother was just your run off the mill village girl Wiley had seduced in one of his adventures. They had only spent one night but magically enough, I was born. I grew up like a b*stard without any father."

"Boohoo, so you had a hard life. Which one of us didn't!"

"SHUT UP! You don't understand! You can never understand because you always had everything! Everything that was supposed to be mine!!"

Glen spat at the ground.

"*Ptui* Don't joke with me! I had everything!? F*CK YOU! MY PARENTS WERE TAKEN FROM ME! I COULDN'T SAVE MY STEPFATHER. EVEN THE MAN I TREATED AS MY OWN GODD*MN BROTHER BETRAYED ME AND DESTROYED OUR LEGACY! WHAT DID I HAVE THAT YOU DIDN'T!?"

"MY FATHER! You had my father's love and respect... When I joined his gang, he didn't even recognize me. It was fine, I never expected him to recognize me anyway. So I thought, let's become his most trusted man. Then I would prove my worth to him and he would be proud of me. That's what I thought anyway. But do you know what happened? Once I told him that he said so? SO? He never even acknowledged me till the day he died! I thought he would at least let me inherit the gang but he left it to you! YOU! It felt like you were his son while I was just some animal he picked up from the streets!"
