Chapter 20 - Chapter 19

School dragged on as if to make things any worse for me. I didn't sleep enough, that was the main point. I'd have to talk to Jake about that.

As I headed out the school and toward the path home I saw a familiar figure leaning on a wall, smoking a cigarette. Once he saw me he took out his drag and dropped it on the sidewalk, stepping on it while walking to me.

"Hey, how was school?"

"What do you want Drake. Your starting to look like a stalker."

"Already to my throat. Can you just give me a chance?"

His words hit me and I remembered the decision I made. He was right. Even though I hated to admit it.

I sighed and adjusted my backpack.

"Fine. What do you want?" I repeated making sure to keep my voice in check and not sound as irritated as I was to be with him.

"Let's go somewhere. Away from all of the others. You want a break from them, right?"

"But I'd be stuck with you."

"It's better than everyone else."

He was right in a way. I quickly thought to myself the pros and cons of being with him, alone.

"Hurry up now. Your friends coming."

"Fine!"

Drake grinned and grabbed my wrist and started running off to the direction to the town before Drew could get to me. We were running until we reached the square and in front of the coffee shop from yesterday.

"What the hell was that?!" I yelled at him still catching my breath.

"You said fine, didn't you?"

"No!... maybe. I don't know it happened all so fast!"

"Well we're out here now. Might as well do something."

He nodded towards the coffee shop in front of us. I looked at it and felt myself grow to want to go in there. He did have a point. We were here and there was time to do something.

"Fine. But after one coffee we're going back home. I need to call Drew first."

I pulled out my phone and started looking for Drew's number when Drake grabbed it and held it high.

"Absolutely not. I need time with you and if you tell him anything he'll just freak and come over here."

He had a point but he grabbed my phone. I started reaching up again to grab it but he only pulled it higher up making sure I couldn't get it. I growled under my breath feeling the anger boil inside me. I tried pushing it down knowing he would enjoy seeing my anger got the best of me.

I took a deep breath and looked at Drake.

"Fine. I won't call him. Let's just go inside and get something."

For a split second I saw surprise on his face but it soon turned to look like defeat. I headed inside the cafe and saw went straight to where Drew and I sat yesterday seeing that the seats were empty. As Drake came to sit with in front of me a waitress came by and asked us for our orders.

"Will you be having your usual today Ms. Samantha?"

"Yes please," was all I said while looking at Drake.

The wait reel turned to Drake and opened her mouth as if to ask him what he'll have but seemed to have been struck silent. I saw her checks redden and eyes widen.

Drake looked at from the side with an off look from what he's looked at me with and then looked back at me, grinning.

"I'll have coffee, please. Black."

The waitress only shook her head as if she couldn't speak than ran off. Drake adjusted in his chair and leaned in a bit toward me.

"She seems into me. Poor thing."

I rolled my eyes. "You must be dreaming."

"If so then this is the best one yet."

I looked at him cautiously. "And why is that?"

"Do I really have to spell it out?"

I knew what he meant just from those words and I glared at him for thinking such a Jake like thing. He laughed a bit and sat back up before looking out of the window. He seemed to have become completely engulfed on the on the outside world as I watched his eyes just drift off into space. His face softened and at that moment I thought I was seeing the real Drake.

He looked innocent. Even a little...

Sad.

Soon the waitress came back with our orders but Drake didn't really move. I saw her wait as if expecting him to say something to her. A second later he broke out of his trance and smile at her before picking up his coffee and taking a large gulp.

By then the waitress had left and I noticed Drake looking at me. Well it was more like staring, specifically in my eyes.

I locked my eyes with his and saw a hint of a smile through his lips. I felt my cheeks get warm and quickly looked away. There was no way I was going to let him get to me like the others.

Wait a second...

What did I just say?! There is no way they got to me either! I'm not getting swept up by anybody!

I looked back up at Drake and saw that he was spacing out by the window again.

Was this what I was like when I was with Drew yesterday?

I sighed and slumped down in my seat looking down.

I feel bad for having done that.

I looked at rake again knowing he had my phone. I just wish I had it. I wanted to say sorry to Drew and try to make it up with him. I couldn't just ask for my phone back though.

Then how could I get it back?

An idea came to me but I didn't like it. I tried thinking of another way to do it but it seemed the first one would be the only one to work.

I drank my coffee but a bit at a time to hurry up and get to my plan. I didn't like having to spend time with him when nothing was happening and I didn't have my phone.

As I started drinking Drake looked back at me and started talking.

"You're quiet. Then again I am too. I didn't really plan ahead with this. I just assumed you'd kick me or something and then run home when I asked you. But here you are."

"I did say I didn't want to be with you."

"Well, technically you said 'it all happened so fast' which means you just went with your gut."

He grinned as if he started wining something. True I said fine due to the stressful situation but I didn't really want to be with him. At least, I think so.

I kept that to myself. If I said that out loud I could ruin everything. I had to keep going with the plan.

I went to change the topic not wanting to talk about that anymore.

"Why do you call yourselves brothers?"

It was a simple question but one I still didn't understand. They weren't related, at least not all of them according to Jake.

"I thought you knew. Jake never keeps to himself."

"Well I know that him and Christopher are brothers and that Alex is their cousin. I also know that you and the others are only children but you all call each other brothers anyway. Why is that?"

It didn't take long for him to answer.

"Well that's easy. We've been together so long it just seems natural."

It made sense. But did any of them have other siblings? Ones that might have died or something in the process of them becoming orphans?

But that was too personal to ask. I didn't deserve to know that.

Drake went into his jacket and pulled out a packet of cigarettes popping one out. He put it in his mouth and then put the pack away. As I watched I noticed my phone in his front Jean pocket and put that into mind. He then pulled out a lighter but before he could light his cigarette I pulled it out of his mouth. He looked at me shocked and put his lighter down.

"No smoking. Not with me anyway."

He groaned and put his lighter up.

"It's only fair. You have my phone."

"You make a good point."

There was more silence. I looked out the window and saw that it was getting dark.

I finished my my coffee and called the waitress over for the bill.

"Finished already? That's too bad. I was enjoying this."

"But we haven't done anything."

"Just being with you is good."

That shocked me. He didn't seem the type to be like that.

I payed the bill and started heading out with Drake behind me. I got out and felt a breeze. Sadly I still had my book bag to weigh me down.

"Sorry for grabbing you right after school. I had no other perfect chance till then."

I rolled my eyes and walked a bit closer to Drake.

"Is there anything else you want to do?"

He looked shocked at first but quickly changed his look to hold a grin.

"There is somewhere I'd like to take you."
