"Now before any of you ask a stupid question like, 'why aren't we starting at page one professor?,' which most of you are thinking by the looks on your faces. The reason is it is a waste of your and my time. You can go through that stuff if you wish but it won't be with me." There were confused faces around the class, but the professor didn't care.
"Alright, does everyone remember the Magical Beasts that appeared the night of the attack?" There was nodding and discussions started around the class, "Good. If you didn't I would be worried and disappointed. Those Beasts are the residents of the forest behind our campus and have an agreement with the school in times of disaster."
"But enough of that. Can anyone tell me the difference between a monster and a magical beast?" The professor looked around the class and saw a hand raised at the back, it belonged to Ezra, "Yes miss, can you please inform us."
Ezra stood up, "A monster is a creature that is power driven and only wants to fulfil it's goal to survive by eating everything weaker then itself. It doesn't care for anything and will even devour it's own young if necessary. Whereas Magical Beasts are intelligent beings that strive to better themselves but keep a balance within their environment and don't take more than is necessary."
"Well done Ezra that is almost completely correct. Monsters are power driven but there have been cases of intelligence from some of these creatures. They are very rare cases with few details, but it is possible and the main theory behind it is evolution. Monsters are also nomadic in a way. They move around like normal animals do, so that they can find new sources of food."
"Magical Beasts on the other hand are territorial creatures that rarely leave their habitat unless it is destroyed or there is a threat that needs to be dealt with. You are correct in saying that they keep the balance of their environment otherwise it would affect them. Now there is a third category of creatures that don't fit in with monsters or Magical Beasts, does anyone know?"
Professor Nara looked around the classroom for any raised hands, but failed to find any, "Alright, since no one knows, they are classified as unknowns. Kind of straightforward when you think about but hey we go along with it. These creatures are also referred to as 'Gods' in some small community and are praised by these people as they keep them safe."
"No one has every documented these creatures, but some brave souls have ventured out to find them but either came back empty handed or never came back at all. These creatures supposedly live in the most dangerous places on the continent. For instance, some say they live inside an active volcano while others say they live on the Acrimonious Mountains."
"All we know for a fact is that these being, if they do exist, have the power to destroy the world as we know, so mages are forbidden to entice them if they do come across such a being. Well enough of that, let's move onto today's lesson. The creatures that live in our backyard, the forest, where here before this school was established."
"No one knows where they came from or how they got here, all we know is that they were here, and we have been lucky enough to earn their trust and benefit from it with their protection. As you saw during the fight, there were some Magical Beasts protecting the dormitory. These were most likely the weakest of the Magical Beasts in the forest."
"The stronger ones were not dispatched as the threat wasn't high enough for them to budge. We don't know how strong they are or how many there are, all we know is that if we were to attempt fighting them we would lose. There would be losses on both sides, but we would be defeated. This is why you have to get permission to enter the forest."
"The school does not want to have a student do something stupid and cause a war with the Magical Beasts. Now, on the battlefield there were some basic magical beasts that fought. We will be discussing them. The first one on the list is a Ry. These Magical Beasts are wolf-like creatures but have distinct differences."
"A Ry is 2 metres long with an average body weight of 120kg. These creatures are extremely fast and dangerous. They co-ordinate themselves in groups and are able to overpower almost any prey with their teamwork. These Magical Beasts were one of the first creatures on the scene during the attack as they live along the outskirts of the forest where there is less vegetation."
"The reason for them living on the outskirts is because of their rank within the food chain of Magical Beasts. They are considered to be weak, which makes us think about how strong the Magical Beasts deeper in the forest must be. Even though they are considered weak between Magical Beasts, to humans they are quite strong."
"If mages went against them it would be quite the fight as Rys can use magic as well. All Magical Beasts can, that's why they are called magical and are different to monsters who cannot use magic correctly. Magical Beasts are different from humans though. They can only use two elements, but they are masters of these elements."
"This is the main reason behind Magical Beasts being so dangerous and why the academy is thankful for their protection. They are masters of the elements and have superhuman strength and speed, which makes them tough opponents for the best of us and monsters. Now onto the Magical Beasts that weren't seen by any except the Year 6's."
"There was a Cretan Bull outside the Year 6 dormitory. It is a majestic white bull with silver horns that have a black tip which can poison it's foe. It is a very rare Magical Beast, with an estimated population of between 50 and 100. That's why the dorm master was so surprised to see it in action. I must say that I have never seen one and am envious of those students, and you all should be to."
"The reason for their small population is us. When humans first came across these majestic creatures we considered them to be normal livestock and slaughtered herds of them for their meat. It was considered quite a delicacy across the continent as it was very tender meat, which was of the highest quality. Once the magical community realised that these were Magical Beasts, we put sanctions up, but people still hunt them illegally."
"Now I know some of you may be wondering why they didn't just fight back. The reason is that they couldn't as majority of their herds consist of young calves that have limited knowledge in fighting and magic just like you guys. Cretan Bulls only breed every 5 years and then the population stays stable as the elderly pass on or leave the herd. Once the calves are 3 years old they are left together by the parents and have to fend for themselves which they weren't able to against mankind."
