"Got something?" Xiumin asked as he watched Tao fumbled upon the radio.
The buzzing and static sounds coming from the speaker aren't a good sign as Tao shook his head in frustration.
"Is there anyone who can hear us? Hello!?" Tao spoke again but yet again, there's no reply. His sharp voice echoed around the smooth cemented walls and floors and it reverberated above the ceiling.
"Do you think there are still people alive out there?" Suho commented, depressed with the idea of no one responding.
"I don't know. I mean I work in a bakery before this thing happened without any fighting skills, how much more for those people who do have surviving skills out there. There should be at least." He sighed.
"The military. Do you think it's still standing?" Kris asked.
Tao glared as he faced Kris who's standing a few meters away from where Tao is sitting.
"Do you think I know Kris, huh?" He spat. Nuisance slurred in his voice.
"I was just asking!" Kris defended as he himself felt upset with the idea that there's no picking up.
Everyone is getting worried. Frustrated with the fact that no one seems to be at reach in this pandemic that swallowed humanity.
Their supplies are running low. The supply run around the sides of the nearest resource locations is getting more difficult to access by the passing weeks as the infected roamed and multiplied in numbers around the vicinity. And there's just enough time, for now, to have their direction coming towards their refuge due to the consistent road paths that they are taking.
"Is there any?" Chanyeol came into view. His clothes were dirtied by rot-smelling muddy blood.
The rotting smell hit his fellas' noses and so they scrunched their face.
"Nothing yet," Tao answered as he tilted the radio and tried to find any alive frequency other than the static noises coming from it.
"How many?" Kris asked.
"Doubling in numbers every passing day. They won't go away so it's better to shut them down as fast as possible before they attract the others to head our way." He said in a deep voice. His hands are bloody with the ax he's holding dripping with dark brown blood.
"Where's Baekhyun?" Xiumin asked.
"Rounding the fences for any damages," Chanyeol answered.
"Gotta head to the front tower. Kyungsoo seemed to saw something in the woods camping and setting a campfire the other night. We can't let our guards down even just a minute. Update me as soon as you get something." Chanyeol spoke before going up the rooftop.
"Found anything?" Chanyeol asked as he stood beside Kyungsoo who was sitting on one of the chairs set up near the hip-height walls preventing people to fall down the ground.
"Nothing unusual. Just couple more zombies heading this way." He mumbled as he sipped his cold coffee.
Chanyeol nodded at the latter's response as he watched the perimeter himself. Nothing seemed to be abnormal by the place. Honestly, it got pretty silent these days yet zombies are cashing towards them either accidentally or intentionally, no one knows.
"About the campfire yesterday on the east side?" Chanyeol asked.
"A horde of zombies might have wandered their way to the camping site they set up last night. Either they fled already or got welcomed to the family of zombies by now." He spoke. The breeze hitting his face with a feeling of worry.
Kyungsoo watched Baekhyun speculate every possible entrance or damages on the fences that might be a ticket for the zombies to get it.
"Don't you think he'll stop observing every crack and bits soon?" Kyungsoo asked in a silent tone.
Chanyeol looked down at where Baekhyun is doing.
"I don't think so." Chanyeol honestly answered.
"He'd been like this ever since anyway. Couldn't change his habit of being super protective and secured." He added.
"Not even you," Kyungsoo responds with a bit of mockery in his voice.
"It's good for us, having someone like him. But it's bad for him, being obligated like that always." Kyungsoo admitted. Something foreign laced on his voice. Something near to empathy.
"Told'em so," Chanyeol answered.
"He wouldn't listen to me." He sighed. Thinking about the idea that this is just a way for Baekhyun to not feel guilty about not being able to save his own family makes him feel bad even more.
"You should take care of him better Chanyeol," Kyungsoo advises. His eyes still trained on Baekhyun's back down the field.
"I know that he wasn't that really strong. He's just trying to be. More like pretending." Kyungsoo blurts.
"I myself admit that I'm not that strong and brave as I look. Not everyone here does. Not even you." Kyungsoo spoke in seriousness.
"I know." That is all that Chanyeol can muster. Kyungsoo was right. Everyone has their own fear and the braveness that's on the outside wasn't always look like that on the inside.
"I like him ever since. And I'm sure I'm in love with him. I would protect him at all cost." Chanyeol mumbled as he watched Baekhyun slant an army knife upon a zombie trying to reach him from outside the fences.
"Of course," Kyungsoo responds and sipped on his cold coffee again.
He sighed and looked at Chanyeol as if examining the taller's expression.
"But Chanyeol, isn't that scary?" Kyungsoo asked.
Chanyeol looked at Kyungsoo with a bit of confusion drawn on his face.
"That you would be choosing between Baekhyun and your group," Kyungsoo answered.
Chanyeol just stood there. The rotten smell doesn't even distract them anymore.
"There'll be no such thing like that'll happen," Chanyeol answered.
"We'll never know," Kyungsoo mumbled as he sipped unto the cup again.
He averted his eyes again on the perimeters, guarding the place for anything that's to come.
"They are back," Kyungsoo spoke using his telescope to find the scavenger team going towards the prison from a good distance away. The smoke and dust flying around the atmosphere like a trail of a jet in the sky.
Chanyeol used his walkie-talkie to signal the guards on the main gate to ready the entrance.
"Wait," Kyungsoo mumbled as he stood up seriously and gave a better view of the path where the trucks are coming from.
After the second and third speculations, he downed that there's something that seemed to be wrong.
Two trucks are supposedly tailing with each other but now he can only see one coming by.
"There's something wrong. Jongin's truck is nowhere to be seen." Kyungsoo spoke.
Chanyeol grabbed Kyungsoo's telescope and saw it for himself and realized that the latter is correct.
Jongin's truck is nowhere to be seen.
Kyungsoo was the one to react and immediately walked down the ground floor to face the incomers.
The truck seemed to be in a hurry as it did screech when the driver hit the break.
There, Chanyeol followed suit, along with Baekhyun and now the others who's waiting for their return.
"Where are the others?" Baekhyun hesitantly asked as he eyed Sehun and Jongin.
Kyungsoo came rushing and felt relieved that Jongin is in one piece except for the blood splattered on their attire as if they'd slaughtered a whole cow for dinner.
"Something happened." Sehun was the one to speak. His voice trembling from what seemed to be fear swimming down his throat.
"Something is out there." He spoke again. He tried calming his voice while Kai tried to calm him by patting the latter's back.
"We lost the others. And the other truck. We are attacked by an unknown creature roaming on the location we decided to check." Jongin was the one to answer though his voice is just a crescendo calmer than Sehun.
"What creature?" Chanyeol asked as he stepped forward.
"A-A monster zombie has a bulky body construct with long tongue and sharp claws. He ripped one of our men in the hip and bit his head off. W-We tried attacking him and shooting him in the head but he seemed smart and he can move quickly. If we didn't run, then we could've been killed by it too." Sehun explained in a terrified voice.
"The giant zombie could run too as he tried to chase us but the truck is faster. I've never seen anything like it my entire life." Jongin shook his head, fear overrunning his system.
A moment of silence drifted upon the surroundings as everyone decode what tragedy just happened with their lost comrades and what fear just got brought to themselves with the idea that something that is bigger and more dangerous lurking around.
"Time to go inside! Sun is already setting! Let's discuss this behind the walls." Baekhyun ordered as he shooed the formation to go inside.
"I'll guard the main gate tonight." Kyungsoo initiated. Baekhyun nodded and so Kyungsoo headed towards the guard post with a shotgun in his able hand and revolver in his quilt.
"I'll join the night guard tonight. Whatever that thing is, it's heading towards us." Baekhyun spoke.
"Basing from what Sehun looked like awhile ago, I'm sure it's not good," Chanyeol mumbled.
"I sent them both to their block already. Lay examined them and told me that there's no major physical damage occurred to them, just exhausted." Luhan intercepted.
Suho took initiative to guard the fences too and the others participated in partners.
"Gotta be the watcher over the watchtower tonight with Sehun I guess," Luhan muttered upon sinking in the situation.
"If they are telling the truth then I suggest we should be on guard at any times. We aren't going to deal with zombies alone from now on, we have something bigger coming our way." Chanyeol spoke in seriousness as the wind blew ominously over the wind as if giving a warning at them that there's something bad going to happen next.
"Guys, I have something to tell you," Baekhyun spoke that made the others flip their heads to hear what he was about to say.
