Baekhyun
"Guys, I have something to tell you." I voiced as I tried to sum up the things that I believe are happening.
If these revelations are real then we are in grave danger. Something is out there. Something scarier and more vicious than the flesh-eating zombies.
"What is it?" Luhan asked, turning his heels around as he sensed that there's something important that's going to come out of my mouth.
I stared at them for quite some time, bearing the curious and impatient expressions they had on their clueless faces.
"Let's gather first," I ordered as I grabbed the cold metallic lamp and lit it with the olden lighter I got from an abandoned shop on one of our supply runs.
"As I told you before. My dad is a scientist in one of the states of CDC in the country. My dad should know what's happening right now and if I can just get to him, there's a big possibility that-"
"Not again," Chanyeol sighed in disagreement as he cut me off. His eyes blazing in disappointment as they met mine.
"Chanyeol, let me finish," I shot back. I sat in a comfortable position on the bench. My eyes catching the small amount of light that's been lingering around us.
"My father isn't just a normal scientist. He's one of the sixty-four scientists that cooperated on making a cure for cancer and for experiments that is confidential to the public rights. This might sound crazy but my father decided to leave us alone for our safety and to have a normal hidden life away from him for our good." I explained probably lying about the abandonment to make my words more substantial.
"Why on earth that your scientist father hid you behind?" Jongin asked. His arm and forehead having cloth bandages.
"Unless they are doing something illegal or something that the public should never know that might create enough reason to threaten the ones who are responsible for it." Kyungsoo responded to the question.
"Exactly," I spoke. I sighed as I am thankful someone is seemingly paying attention. I looked at Chanyeol still skeptical of what my actions leading the situation next.
"Tell us more." Lay joined as he folded his arms seriously. His eyeglasses in tack as he rubbed his chin with his left hand being curious about the things I'm saying.
"I believe that my father has at least something to do with the happenings right now. I mean, I believe that the CDC may have been involved with the crisis and apocalypse that we are experiencing now." Baekhyun answered in content. Somehow the 'what ifs' that hunt him at certain nights are swimming out of his mouth this time.
"Why would they do such shits like this in the first place? Human extinction?" Kyungsoo grumbled as he played with his empty metallic cup.
"Or maybe, a failed experiment." Lay was now getting to the picture.
"Right! Maybe something bad occurred to the experiment and it got out of hand!" I forced.
"So what're we going to do?" Sehun asked whom I didn't notice until now.
"How's Jungkook?" I asked instead. His face was still as stoic as Chanyeol which is hard to decipher.
"Still feeling sick. He kept asking me if they might still be alive. But I can't lie. I saw them get killed so that's what I told him. Better than getting his illusions up to false hope." He said, averting his gaze away from the lamp that he'd been staring at for too long.
At that moment, I saw a hint of guilt. Not just a hint of it but it shone on his eyes how he is suffering from the failure being one of the leaders of the supply run.
"Bro, we did our best." Jongin tried to comfort. Pouring a small smile on his lips.
RM, J-hope, Suga, and Jimin just passed away. Great people. I tried to remember every single encounter I had with them.
Not really much but it's quite a heartbreak-worth kind of thing to reminisce. RM was a serious type of man, he is a good instructor but a kind one. I could feel the wind now that's been coming from the window frame, barricaded with metal poles vertically.
I remembered how Suga, RM's cousin, tried to stop him from going on the supply run this morning. And in a result, Suga decided to come along to his older cousin and now they're gone. Suga is a silent man, a very introverted yet skillful cook. Jimin and J-Hope on the other hand were Jungkook's best buddies, they knew each other even before the apocalypse came crashing on us. They basically are brothers, but now I can't hear their lame jokes and funny rants on the world anymore. I remembered this morning when Jimin knew that Jungkook is going on a supply run, he negotiated to switch places with him on the roaming sections to scavenging. Now, their names are the only matters that got home. Four great people are gone.
"I'll go try to comfort him, hyung," Taehyung said as he excused himself from the meeting.
I followed Taehyung's back with my eyes until the boy turned to the corner. My mind went away from the meeting for a moment. I'm sure everyone is feeling bad. Being frustrated even. Losing someone is pretty normal nowadays, but it never eased the pain, however.
"Baekhyun." I heard Chanyeol's deep voice call to me. I blinked and looked up to see him standing in the shadows, further behind the people surrounding him.
"What's on your mind?" Chanyeol asked a bit lowly and demanding.
I coughed and remembered where we left off.
Right. About my father. About...
"I plan to find my father," I confessed. Trying the waters which I knew would be a great risk but I already backed it up with an idea.
Everyone as expected couldn't believe it in their eyes as if I told them a supposed funny joke that turned to be not funny at all.
"No way." Jongin shook his head. Kyungsoo shrugged in disagreement.
"Not possible." I heard Suho commented as he looked at me apologizingly.
"That's never gonna happen," Chanyeol remarked. Stepping forward unto the light of the ragged metallic lamp that gave us light.
"Don't worry, I'm going alone," I spoke, backup plan firing up.
"Do you think I'm gonna let you go away?" He raised his voice that resonated around the ominous atmosphere.
I sighed. Quite upset.
"He's right. I myself won't let you too." Luhan joined as he stepped forward too. His eyes trained on me.
"Out there is a battlefield, today we lost four of the small group that we had. We can't afford to lose someone more, especially you." Luhan admitted as he sighed.
"Why do you always think this way?" Luhan then asked a bit loud and forceful, brows narrowed.
"That's the only way, Luhan. Grabbing chances is the best thing!" I tried to defend myself. Besides, if dad is still truly alive, they might take us in.
"How'd you know that your father is still alive out there anyway?" He asked.
"I don't know if he's still alive but he's the only connection that I've got for CDC to take us in. If there's something that the military is willing to serve, then CDC and WHO are the best choices to defend because these organizations are the highest probability of salvation." I tried to reason out factual opinions.
"Then if you're the only connection we've got for CDC to take us in behind their walls, then don't you think it's reckless for you to go out alone without our help?" Sehun spoke as he stared at me, still skeptical of the things I'm saying.
"Enough," Chanyeol spoke. Staring at the shadow of the lamp.
"We could go as a gr-" Lay started but got cut off.
"I said enough!" Chanyeol shouted as he glared at Lay. Lay sighed and backed away, fixing his glasses.
Chanyeol breathed as he tried his best to remain calm.
"No one is allowed to get outside the walls unless I say so. No one is heading to a godforsaken CDC that is a thousand miles away and basically loaded with walking corpses." Chanyeol ordered. His frustrated and angry voice rang in my ears.
"Park is right, Baekhyun. Besides, it's a death wish." Lay joined deleting his hopes immediately as he saw clearer on the picture.
"If CDC itself was the origin of the disaster then wouldn't it be dangerous for us to go in there? Walking towards the fire?" He added.
"There's no us, Doc. There's only me. Besides, I-"
"God damn it, Baekhyun! You are not going there, understand?!" Chanyeol growled. I breathed and shut my mouth. His eyes blazing as they almost pierced through me.
"Chanyeol is right," Luhan remarked disappointingly at me.
"And I can't deal with this kind of conversation. You are not going out there. Period. Are you insane? Going alone? You can't even almost save yourself from that God damn grocery store that almost became your grave yard! Chanyeol has to be there to save you. And you're dreaming about this CDC alone? We're going with you or no one will go." Luhan spoke frustration building at his voice as well.
I shut my eyes for a moment to calm my nerves out. I am angry.
Yeah, now I'm angry at myself.
Why do they sound so right?
Why do I feel like I'm wrong?
"Okay." I tried to smile.
"Let's stay here until we die. Sit and wait for zombies and even fucking monsters to knock the fences out and eat us all raw." I exclaimed as I stood up to take my leave.
Silence is evident in the atmosphere.
I started walking away. After a couple of steps, I had the urge to turn my back and was about to apologize yet pride took better on me as I cursed under my breath and decided not to.
"Guys!" Tao's voice echoing in the hallways and there he came, catching his breath, rushing.
"Something happened?" I asked.
He stayed silent for a while to get ahold of himself before taking a deep breath and exhaling.
Then there, Kris walking quickly towards us coming from where Tao appeared.
"S-Someone.." he started, calming his breath.
"Someone picked up!" Tao raised, hope shone in his eyes.
"Someone picked up from the telecom of CDC!" Tao smiled as he almost knocked himself on Kris' side.
"At first it's just static and repetitive instructions in a loop until someone picked up," Kris explained clearer.
"They didn't entertain our questions before the person on the other line asked if we knew someone out of the never-ending names she recited. And then after mentioning tens of names, we heard Baekhyun's whole name! 'Byun Baekhyun!' And we said we know Byun Baekhyun, and that's the time she halted and got on the next question she had, like the location of the place, severity of infections, number of survivors, sightings of mutated creatures. And then when she asked all the necessary pieces of information the line went dead." Tao explained in a hurry as he caught up with his breath.
I became speechless. And I know for sure, the others too.
"The CDC?" Chanyeol asked, coming forward.
"Yeah! We are safe!" Tao smiled in excitement.
"Did she mentioned anything else?" Chanyeol asked intrigued.
"No, but they knew Byun Baekhyun! Isn't it great?!" Tao responded in relief.
Their heads turned to me. My mind is wandering to something else.
"Tao?" I mentioned.
"Did you answered all her questions?" I asked, not feeling totally well with the idea.
"Yes as fast as a bullet." He answered.
I got a little silent with that.
"You mentioned our exact location?" I asked again, not really feeling good as my stomach churned a bit.
Tao raised smiled and nodded,
"Why?" I questioned as I stood up.
"It's CDC! They could help us!" He answered, still, he's not getting what I want him to understand.
"Did they mentioned offering us help?" I asked.
Silence.
Then they realized what I am wanting to emphasize as they looked at me a bit bothered.
Tao eventually turned silent as he realized what he just did.
"I'm sorry... I.. I didn't thought about that." He spoke, his face showed nervousness.
Knowing who am I is bad. But knowing where our exact location, where they could find us easily is even worse.
You can't just offer your safety to a complete stranger.
