Chereads / The Fate of Nenoria / Chapter 4 - Gen

Chapter 4 - Gen

Gen, the half-human/half-fairy, returns to the Wilda Forest after visiting the local woodcutting guild.

She had gone to consult with the guild to discuss the number of trees they were allowed to cut down within the forest. Even though being half-fairy, she still upholds her kind's duty to protect nature.

When she arrived back to where her house was supposed to be, which was a simple wooden cabin located in the middle of the forest. She discovered that a large area of trees in such a short amount of time had been cut down. Even including her house was demolished. All her precious belongings were gone.

Frustrated that this has occurred, she notices where her house used to be is now being occupied by a strangely designed metallic building she did not recognise. That matter not still. She furiously walks to the building and loudly knocks on what appears to be a door demanding the master of the house.

"Hey, open up! You better have a good excuse as to why you cut down so many trees even though I have discussed with the woodcutter's guild that you aren't allowed to harvest here or else I'm going to place a curse on you." Says Gen angrily while threatening the intruders.

Then the door slides open...

--------------------

After a long discussion with General Sherman, Kretschmer and the rest of D-squad was assigned a new role after their discovery. To find out more about the planet and gain new information from their captured knight.

Their leaders back onboard the mothership were all struggling to come to terms with D-squad's discovery. Senator Edith Cowan sent a message back to their homeworld of Earth to report their findings. The usual colonizing plan had to be scrapped to adapt to this new world. The main concern for them is how they are meant to approach the indigenous people, not wanting to appear as invaders but as peaceful people who want to settle down. The advance squads were now tasked with further surveying and intelligence gathering. Most of all, they are to not cause any harm to the natives unless any action threatens them first. They emphasised to the outpost squads to use violence as a last option. Avoiding any unnecessary deaths.

"Aah jeez, can this day get any worse?" Says Corporal Kretschmer in an exhausted tone after his call with the General.

"When people usually say that, things do get worse." Replies Private Amelia as she lay on the couch eating a bag of chicken flavoured Smiths chips she snuck in.

Meanwhile, Private Sophia returned to her room without saying a single word.

"Do ya know what's up with her?" Amelia asks Kretschmer about Sophia's unusual quietness.

"No clue. I guess she's just shy." Kretschmer answered Amelia's question.

Their squad leader and the lady knight were still left unconscious in both rooms. As Kretschmer was about to relax after a stressful day, he hears a loud knocking on the front door of their outpost with someone screaming in a language they do not understand.

"Expecting an Amazon delivery? Amelia says jokingly to Kretschmer.

He puts on his LS4 battle armour expecting it to be one of the natives. He walks to the door and opens it. What he sees was a young lady with green long hair wearing what seems to be hunter-style clothes. They both stood there looking at each other's weird appearances. He decided it would be awkward without her seeing his face. He then takes off his helmet so she could see it. She stared at his face with her eyes carefully observing him. There was a brief moment between the two with an awkward silence. The lady then continues rambling on about something he doesn't understand.

"Hey miss, sorry to tell you this but I can't understand what your trying to tell me." Says Kretschmer in a politeful tone.

She then stops talking. He notices a small disk-like circle appear on one of her fingertips. She then starts to point and chants some random words at him.

Surprising Kretschmer, assuming it was some kind of weapon. He quickly lunges at the green-haired woman.

"Hey! What was that for?" Says a mysterious feminine voice. "How dare you attack a defenceless woman, have you no shame. And get off me!"

Kretschmer lays there confused. "Wait a minute, how can I understand you?"

"Are you an idiot or what? Didn't use see I use 'Magic Tounge' spell on you. And I told you to get off me already!" She says as she protests.

Kretschmer gets off her and is still unclear on what just happened. She claimes she used a 'Magic Tounge' spell that allowed him to understand her and even speak to her.

"I am so sorry for that ma'am." He tries to apologise to her for the misunderstanding. "What can I help with you today?"

"What can I help with you today" She repeats what Kretschmer just said with an irritated tone. "Hmmm...Let me think, oh yeah. YOU DESTROYED MY HOUSE AND DESECRATED THIS PROTECTED AREA!" She screams at him at the top of her lungs.

"Hold on a moment, what do you mean we destroyed your house and 'desecrated' this area?"

"By the gods of Nenoria. Did you not see a wooden hut before you replaced it with this strange house of yours? Also, I told the woodcutter's guild this part of the forest was under my protection and you've defiled it!"

"Hey what's taking so long?" Says Amelia as she approaches the door. She then sees a green-haired lady arguing with Kretschmer. " Whose the green-haired chick?"

"Is that your wife! I will tell her you've just assaulted an innocent young lady." She then cast another 'Magic Tounge' spell on Amelia too.

"What the-" Amelia reacts to the spell as it was cast on her.

"Wait, wait, wait... You've got this all wrong. She's not my wife and we didn't mean to destroy your house or cut down this section of the forest." Kretschmer tries to defend himself but was hopelessly losing. The bots must have just recognised her house as an obstacle and removed it along with the trees in the area.

"What the hell did she just do to me? And who said I was his wife, not in a million years would I date a guy like him."

"So he is not your man then. I see." The lady acknowledges. "So you live with a man who assaults defenceless women." She finishes off with that last statement, targeting Kretschmer.

"Corporal Kretschmer, how could you." Amelia says in a cheeky tone. "First you kidnap women and then you attack them for no reason, how despicable. You truly are the enemy of all women."

"Agreed, you Mr Kwes-ch-mer," She tries to pronounce his name. "Whatever your name is, are the enemy of all women. I hope you die from Nenoria's divine judgement one day."

He stood there defeated, being insulted by the green-haired lady and Amelia. He was labelled as "the enemy of all women". He says to himself, 'dammit Chain, I need you.'

"So, what were we talking about here?" Amelia asks as she got carried away for bullying her superior.

"As I was saying, you destroyed my house and cut down the trees in this area for which they were protected under me. Explain yourselves before I report you to the local knight order. Also, I expect some compensation for destroying my home. By the way, it's not ma'am, it's Gen."

Amelia understood that this 'Gen' person was frustrated with the inconvenient location of their forward outpost. And in the process, it made her basically homeless. Regarding the trees, they had to clear the area by cutting down the trees to make space for their outpost. She was still unsure why she was so concerned with them.

She later invited her into her squad's outpost to better understand the situation. Her successful persuasion was thanks to her watching her mother during her diplomatic speeches back on Earth. And the other reason was the fact that a woman could only understand another woman. Kretschmer was still in mental shock for how we were belittled.

Amelia, Kretschmer and Gen sat at the table to formally apologise and explain their reason. Hopefully, Gen would come to understand their circumstances. The most worrying part was how they were going to explain to her that they came from another planet.

During their explanation, they noticed Gen's confused face. Kretschmer revealed to her that they came from a world beyond the skies and found a place to settle down. Saying that their leaders never expected to be living beings on the planet, originally assuming it was lifeless and was the ideal place for them to colonize. He continues saying that he and Amelia were part of the Interplanetary Federation Union or IFU for short. Which was basically their world's government. They are part of the IFU's military branch and were sent as an advance party to secure the location for their colonist's arrival. To make sure it didn't sound they were invading their lands, he says they come in peace and hope to coexist with the inhabitants.

After their explanation, they gave her a moment. It was going to be hard for her to take it all in. She sat in the chair speechless for what they just told her.

"I can't believe it," Gen says shocked. "You're telling me you both come from beyond the sky. I am scared to admit I thought you were both lying at first. But now that I look at it, I just don't know what to believe. This 'potato chip' you call it is very nice, none like anything I have ever tasted before."

"I know this must be very hard to understand at first. Believe me, I can't believe we're both able to talk to you right now. How were you able to do that?" Kretschmer asks.

"I assumed you came from a foreign nation since I didn't understand your language. That's why I used the 'Magic Tounge' spell on both of you so you could understand me." Gen explains.

"So what you were doing earlier wasn't some weapon trying to attack me? Kretschmer says, trying to understand the 'Magic Tounge' spell.

Gen nods. "Do you people not have magic?" Gen asks.

"No, we don't. But that would be pretty cool." Amelia replies.

"Magic is not cold," Gen says confused by Amelia's comment. "Wait. Then if you are not mages, how is it that you are maintaining that light orb on your ceiling. If you claim you come from beyond the sky, then without magic, it would be impossible to travel here and maintain that light orb."

Both Amelia and Kretschmer chukkle. "Yes we are not mages, but we have something much better. Electricity."

"I still don't understand what you are trying to say. But back to the main point, I want compensation. You destroyed my house and cut down this area of the forest. You should be rich if you travelled this far." Gen demands to be compensated for her house.

"I get the house part but why are you so upset with us cutting this part of the area." Kretschmer asks curiously."

"Even though I am a half-fairy, I still have my duty to protect the trees we have been blessed with. As it is part of my belief to do so." Gen explains.

Amelia and Kretschmer look at each other at what Gen said.

"Hold on a moment, you're a fairy?" Amelia asks baffled.

"Half-fairy" Gen emphasizes. "My father was a fairy and my mother was a normal human."

"I thought fairies were small?" Amelia asks.

"Small? That is ridiculous."

"Say that to Tinker Bell."

Gen look confused whereas Kretschmer understood the joke.

"Unfortunately at the moment, we don't have anything of equivalent value to pay you back," Kretschmer says.

"What!" Gen says as she was shocked thinking she would be compensated.

"Relax there missy, as he said. We don't have any money on us right now but we should be able to compromise on something." Amelia tries calming Gen down.

Amelia looks over to Kretschmer as she sees him thinking of a way to pay Gen back. "But I think we have a better alternative." He interrupts. "Gen, would you like to work for the IFU. I promise you will be paid back tenfold. At the moment we need a guide to help us better understand this world and apparently as I just found out, people can use magic."

"Not everyone can use magic." Gen corrects Kretschmer. "I am fortunate to have magic as I have fairy blood in me. However, humans can still use magic. It is just less common for a human compared to other races. There is a 1 in 12 chance for a human to appear with magical abilities. This goes to say for a baby to have magic even though both the parents didn't possess any magic in the first place. That's why most elite magic families only choose to have married a partner from another elite magic family. By them doing so, the offspring is more likely to be born with magic and therefore also increasing their mana potential."

"Wow, you seem quite knowledgeable in this area," Kretschmer says as he was surprised.

"Thank you, I studied at the Ustirian Magic Academy for 4 years before graduating at an intermediate level."

"This is perfect. With your knowledge of magic, you are the perfect candidate in helping us be our guide. So, have you decided yet?" Kretschmer asks.

"Considering your proposition and my current situation, I see no other option in accepting."

"We have a deal then." Kretschmer reaches out for a handshake. Gen stares at his hand not knowing how to respond.

"Pssst...Gen. From where we come, this is called a handshake. You hold someone's hand and move it up and down several times as a way of greeting them or of showing that you agree to something." Amelia explains.

As they both shake hands, Kretschmer thinks to himself as he thought he forgot something important. At that moment, the kidnapped knight rushes out of his room looking at the three of them.

"Oh yeah, now I remember."
