Chapter 5 - Hidden Test

She felt a tap on her shoulder.

She started.

The woman who tapped her blinked in confusion.

"Sorry," Freya said. "I wasn't...um...I...I was distracted."

The woman narrowed her eyes. "Are you here for the Meet as well?"

Freya nodded.

"Which position are you applying for?"

"Um...Substitute teacher."

"Which subject?"

Freya sweatdropped.

Any would do, she wanted to say.

"I don't know yet."

The woman raised an eyebrow. "How can that be? Don't you have an assigned floor?"

"Floor 14?"

The woman stilled. Her eyes narrowed and looked at Freya from top to bottom. When their eyes met again, the woman's eyes were hostile.

"Are trying to show people that you are different?" she asked with disdain.

Freya shuffled her feet, her fists tightened. "N-no."

The woman smirked at her stutter. "I'm Bree and I will be Madam Selone's Substitute Teacher. I am an expert in Magical Field theories!"

Freya looked up, her eyes lit up in excitement. "Really? I love Richard's theory of Like Currents the best. It makes so much sense! What about you?"

Bree scoffed. "Like Currents? What are you talking about?"

"Richard George's theory of-"

"Hey!" one of the doorman called. "If you want to attend the interview, you need to hurry. It's nearly 10!"

Bree hurried inside.

Freya followed her, happy that she wouldn't have to ask for directions and embarrass herself even more.

The scent of lilac hit her sense, refreshing her mind.

Freya's mind went to a potions book she had read four years back. 'Lilac and Bleeding Heart flowers were used in core cleansing potions.'

Freya's heart thumped in excitement. Potions with Lilacs were expensive! She never thought she would get the chance to experience something with it in this life!

Freya barely hid her excitement and observed the inside of the tower, another novelty.

The interior of the tower had black mirror walls and a golden tiled floor.

She looked up.

On the ceiling, a story was being told through paintings.

She stood still in awe.

The amount of magic and effort that must have gone into constructing the Spell constructions for these left her speechless.

Bree didn't stop to sightsee. She briskly marched to her destination. The Elevator.

Freya noticed Bree get into the rectangular box and hurried over inside.

"You could have caught the next one," Bree said in distaste.

Freya smiled awkwardly.

The elevator door closed.

Bree raised her hand and concentrated. A glowing white circle appeared in the air. A lotus petal appeared on either side of the circle.

Freya looked on in awe. Space Magic. The colour of the circle determined the strength of the weapon it could store. The Highest was Black. The number of petals determined how many types of items you could store.

Freya smiled. She didn't mind the job if she lost it to someone who could do Space Magic. Bree was clearly someone more capable.

An envelope fell out of the circle into Bree's waiting palms.

She placed the letter to the Slab on the wall.

[Ding!]

[Please place your hand on the slab.] a soft, childish voice said.

Bree did so.

Freya looked around in wonder. System! Spirit Constructions was a delicate technique! She wished she could just get a glimpse of its workings!

[Bree Carls. 94% in 12th Order. Passed.]

Freya raised an Eyebrow. So they did have a percentage count?

What was it? 30? 40?

"What's the minimum score required?" Freya asked.

Bree sighed. "70. If you come with subjects like maths and literature, 80."

Freya felt her heart drop. Her score was 79%.

She wanted to cry. She should have studied better in Literature.

The elevator door opened.

There was a thin blue film covering the space.

Bree walked off easily.

Freya grabbed the Application Letter that she thankfully decided to bring along and placed it on the Slab.

[Ding!]

[Please Place your hand on the Slab.]

Freya did ao.

There was a moment of silence.

[Freya Wang. 79% in 12th Order. Freya Wang scored 995 on 1000 in Magical Theory. Adding 2% to the total score as a bonus. Total score, 81%. Passed.]

The Elevator opened.

Freya wanted to cry happy tears. That was pure luck. Absolute luck!

Freya walked out of the Elevator with a spring to her step.
