Chapter 10 - A Chance

The first person to step forward was a man in his late twenties wearing a green bowler hat.

His stride was purposeful and firm.

He touched the Lotus centre.

The was a flash of light.

The curly-haired woman looked towards the figure in the hood who held the List.

The figure shook his head.

The woman sighed. "I'm sorry, Mister Flown, you are not applicable."

The man nodded in disappointment and walked away.

Freya pursed her lips. What was going on? Was there a special effect that should be seen or was it something else?

The next three had the same reaction. A Flash of light, the woman looking at the hooded figure and then announcing that the person should leave.

The next one to come towards the Lotus was a girl in the light pink dress, with a white tail swishing behind her.

Freya looked on in surprise. A beastkin? Why was a beastkin here? Was Freya in the competition with other races as well, and not just the witches and warlocks?

If so, she wasn't sure she would be able to get this job even if there was a chance for her.

And looking at the number of students in line that could reach more than a hundred, Freya wasn't sure she would get the chance to test it out at all.

[Don't worry, Host! I'm here! Don't fear!]

Freya started.

The person in front of her, a tall and chubby woman, turned to look at her.

Freya gave her an awkward smile. "Sorry. Just a bit nervous."

The woman nodded and turned back.

Freya let out a sigh of relief.

[If you want to talk to me, just think of me while talking and it would be fine.]

Freya gave a subtle nod. 'You scared me.'

[I do have a heavy voice, huh?]

There was a smugness to its tone.

'Nope. I forgot you existed.'

The System felt betrayed. Why was its Host so cruel?

[How could say that, Host? I'm here to help you aren't I?]

Freya frowned. 'What? Don't come up with ridiculous stories to justify your bad coordination skills.'

[Host is a very cruel person.]

'Thank you.'

[That was not a compliment!]

'Are you sure?'

The next one to go up to the Lotus was a tall man in a tight blue shirt that was basically see-through.

Some of the girls and a few boys in the line giggled.

The curly-haired woman glared at them.

The room fell silent.

The man placed his hand on the Lotus.

There was a flash and the image of a rat projected out of the blue crystal in the Lotus centre.

The woman smiled. "Mr Verin, you are assigned to the Menagerie Department."

The man bowed and left.

The curly-haired woman looked at the line of waiting candidates. "One down. 58 names to go."

A murmur arose in the room.

The next person went forward.

It was a tall, lean girl, with short hair who wore a beautiful green silk shirt and a long skirt to match it.

She placed her hand on the Lotus.

There was a flash but no image appeared this time.

Freya let out a relieved breath that was short-lived.

The curly-haired woman turned to the hooded figure, who nodded and pointed at a name in the list.

The woman nodded back. She turned to the girl. "Ms Fu, you are assigned to Master Curson as his assistant."

The tall girl bowed respectfully and walked away.

Freya felt another sense of crisis rise in her heart. Some people came here under recommendation.

Her mind went to the Application Letter in her pocket. It was used as a wrapper and was dragged into her house by a rat. Could it be that the person who had the Application Letter also knew of this procedure and didn't want to attend because they knew they couldn't win?

As the line moved forwards, the number of people who either had a recommendation or an image appeared on the Lotus increased and with it, the number of names on the list decreased.

Freya pursed her lips in anger.

[You will get your chance, I'm sure!]

'Thanks.'

[Really!]

'Okay.'

[Believe me!]

'Be quiet.'

[Okay.]
