"So, what you're telling me is that you're French?", that's the first thing Jason asks me the second we're off the jet.
Sighing, I rolled my eyes at his unbecoming curiosity, "Jace I don't think that is what's important right now".
Jace has been drilling me with questions for the last five minutes. We're currently making our way to the car that will be taking us from the airport and to wherever it is that my dad wants me to go to next.
"But, if you must know", I continued and Jace turns quickly to face me, "I was actually born in England but grew up in France. A simple Google search would've told you that much".
It's his turn to roll his eyes as he opens the door to the backseat for me and I climb in. He takes his seat up front while Victor drives. The second the car drives off we resort to the same silence that was on the plane only minutes before.
Jason's sudden change in behavior is suspicious in the least. He's never one to ask so many questions or seem so overly eager about anything. which makes me think that he is doing this mostly to distract me. I'm almost gracious that he's making an effort to try and distract me from the situation at hand, but that doesn't change what happened nor does it make it hurt any less.
My double ganger got murdered in the past twenty-four hours and if anyone finds out that Rajaun was not really me then that's a whole new can of worms to open up.
My father was sure to cover this all up. I'm not sure yet, just how he'll do it, but that man is ten times smarter than I'll ever be and for once I was thankful instead of feeling intimidated by that simple fact.
"Where are we going Victor", I ask for the second time before he glances at me in the mirror and looks back at the road.
I switch my gaze to Jason who only shrugs. I huff in frustration before plopping myself back into the backseat.
Wherever we were going my dad must have sworn them to silence since they were being so tight lipped about it. I haven't even talked to my dad since this whole ordeal unfolded. Expecting a phone call in the middle of all this chaos might be a little too much to ask for it seems.
I'm completely bored now, yet apprehensive. It's one splendid mix of emotions, that much I can tell you.
We've been driving for nearly half an hour. It has been silent for just as long. My eyes are on the verge of closing and possibly never opening again when my phone erupts in my pocket startling me a little bit more than it should've.
"Who is calling you?", Victor speaks for the first time in almost thirty minutes.
He has a sudden look of concern in his eyes that discourages me from retorting and instead I quickly pulled out the ringing device to glance at the caller ID.
"It's an unknown number", I attempt to show him the screen and he signals for me to hand him the phone.
I only cock an eyebrow at him in response, "You're driving. There are rules against that you know".
Somehow, he manages to stretch back, grab the phone and slap me in the head without crashing.
That's some skill, right there.
"No need to be so rough", I mutter as I rub my head and sit back in the seat.
"Who is this?", Victor answers my phone a bit too aggressively. I watch as he nods to something the person on the other line says.
"Solace is gonna be busy for a couple of days. He's not allowed to be around anyone right now", who is this dude talking to? "Why?", He asks a second later, then he says, "because he's contracted a disease and is getting treated for it".
This causes my eyebrows to shoot up. The fact that Victor even bothers to engage into conversation with the person who called means that it's somebody that I know.
With that realization I try to get back the phone from him.
I launch at him without a second thought, "Give it to me you dick",
"That statement sounded so wrong," Jason commented from beside us causing Victor to snicker.
"I always knew you had a crush on me", Victor mocked, "but sorry dude I don't swing that way".
"I meant the phone you prick!", I fire back as he and Jason begin to laugh even louder at my expense.
After a few seconds he finally passes it to me, and I return to my seat and put it to my ear.
"Hello".
"Ferd is that you?".
Only one person calls me 'Ferd' with affection.
"Delilah, how did you get my number?", I asked confused.
"I ah, got it from Ariadne", she explained, "I couldn't wait to talk to you. About what happened between us".
Oh crap!
The last thing I wanted to do was to talk about my feeling in front of these two losers. They'd never let me live it down.
That's why I said, "Now's not really a good time".
There was a good pause within which I felt like biting off my fingernails.
"Oh", and there it is, the disappointment was so clear in her voice that I was at a total loss for words.
"Ah that's okay", she cleared her throat, "we can talk some other time".
I was already beginning to feel bad at this point.
She had made it clear that she liked me earlier and though I wasn't sure how I felt about her yet, this whole situation was beginning to make me feel bad.
"Look, Delilah it's not that I don't want to talk about it. I just can't do that right now".
"I heard you had a disease".
"That's not true", I corrected hastily.
This time she only laughed. It was an easy-going laugh that made me feel like everything was going to be alright.
"I'll call you soon alright?".
She sighed slightly before responding, "Sure". Then the line went dead.
Victor looked at me from the mirror and he must've seen the distraught look on my face or maybe it was just the fact that they'd just overheard the entire conversation.
"You alright there, Solace?", he asked. Even Jace turned around awaiting my answer.
"I will be", was my answer because truly, I wasn't okay. But somehow, I knew I'd be okay though.
Victor nodded and Jace turned towards the road again.
"Will you guys tell me where we're going, please", I practically begged this time.
I could tell that I'd gotten to Victor this time, so I decided to lay it on a little more.
"Who am I gonna tell? You guys are with me twenty-four seven. Besides, me telling someone would compromise my own safety and I'm not dumb enough to put myself in danger".
"Fine!", Victor sighed a bit extravagantly.
I smiled broadly as I pulled myself closer to the spot between the two front seats.
"The Dubois have a safe house a couple miles away that's where we're heading. Your dad is meeting us there in two hours. Don't worry you'll be safe. There'll be extra security and we already researched the place ourselves, right Jason?".
When Jason didn't answer Vick nudged his shoulder.
"Right", Jason agreed but he was clearly not paying attention.
Victor looked back at me with an expectantly look on his face as he noticed my reaction.
"See", he complained, "that's why I didn't want to tell you".
"Du- Dubois", I stuttered. I think I might've even gulped just by thinking about that family.
"What's the matter", I shot Jace a glare for his stupid question but then I remember that he hasn't actually been my bodyguard from day one to know too much about me, "that's your dad's best friend right?".
I gulped for the second time in two minutes, "Yeah, Esteban Dubois is my dad's best friend", he nodded not seeing the problem until I said the last part, "I also dated his daughter for two years. Let's just say that she was devastated when I left".
