With their new knowledge of the fields, the boys came obsessed with training. They asked Zero if they could build another room on the ship that was specially set up for training their combat abilities and using their new suit.
It was during this training they found they had an affinity towards 3 of the fields. Gravity, Motion and Space. They could hear and understand the others but these three they could isolate and analyse the easiest.
They had come up with 3 new moves, but these moves drained Infy of energy so they couldn't use them repetitively. They had 'shimmer step' which allowed them to teleport 1m in any direction this used minimal energy teleporting longer than that used too much energy.
The next move was Halt, this move allowed them to stop the motion of any object within a 2m sphere the larger the kinetic energy the object had the more energy it took to stop. This was a large ditch move if they were ever in a fatal situation.
The final move was a little boring but could prove to be a lifesaver in certain situations. This move was fixed gravity. It would allow for the boys to change gravity in a local area the larger the difference in the two gravity the more energy it would take.
After mastering these new moves Null had also been working on his marksmanship and muscle memory for firing in 360 degrees, Null had an advantage over other humans he could see in all directions with the help of Infy. This also meant that the system had never trained him on how to effectively use this ability so he had to train himself.
It was after one of these training sessions that Infy had decided to ask Zero the question he's had on his mind for a while.
"Zero who are we training to fight? Is it humans?"
The Watcher was taken back by the questions. At first, his choice for the super-soldier pod was for him to create a guard human. Something he could take with him to show off to the other races but since their birth there thinking had changed they just wanted the twins to be strong enough to survive in society.
The Watcher had been observing the twins becoming more and more isolated even from each other and they knew that they would have to return to humanity sooner or later. Angels are nearly immortal and are used to eons of isolation but that kind of lifestyle would not suit the boys.
"You are training to be strong, so strong that humans will find you valuable. Human value strength over everything else. There will come a time when you have to return to humanity and when that time comes I want you to be as strong as possible"
"We are going see other humans?" Null perked up at that suggestion. The only people he ever interacted with were Infy and Zero he craved more interaction.
"But how will they know we are strong?"
"I might have a solution" said Zero cryptically.
Later that week.
"Infy, I don't think I can physically do that without our suit"
"Just trust me, have I been wrong on the other 6 waves?"
Infy had come up with a firing solution that should have allowed Null to finish the wave without taking return fire and to use the minimal number of resources.
"It's showtime" Null quickly ran out from cover and enacted the solution that Infy had developed. He methodically shot his rail gun. Each shot delivered a killing blow to at least 5 enemies at once. Each shot would hit the first target in the optimal location to minimise deflection.
"The AI of these bots is so predictable, it is not even a challenge" Infy was disappointed. They were promised a complex and difficult exam but instead they had this. This being a horde mode protect the target scenario. Null and Infy had to stop the enemy combatant from reaching the president office. They had been in combat for nearly 2 hours and were currently on wave 7, with each wave getting progressively harder.
There were only 7 minutes left on their 2-hour timer. *beep* "Wave 8 will commence in 10 seconds" came the announcement via their communicator.
Wave 8 was different from all other rounds. The combatant this round were heavily armoured drones. It had over 200 drones that Null and Infy had to either evade or destroy. "Null, we only have to wait 6 minutes and 12 seconds. I can now plot a successful evasion course."
"No, we will not hide, we have to make them acknowledge us, or else they won't let us into the competition. I have a new plan" Null once again relayed his plan to Infy via the mind-link.
"you are crazy, but let's do it" replied Infy.
In a normal office space back on mars, an analyst was checking out the latest submissions for the Youth Solider Competition (YSC). YSC is a competition held in Martian space every year that will allow youths between the accepted ages of 10-17 to compete against each other. Competing can help soldiers to gain scholarships into the best military schools. Competitors must complete an entry exam at one of the major bases in the solar system and submit it for approval.
Upon acceptance, the competitors have to physically travel to mars. Due to distances in space and travel time even with the fusion constant acceleration drive, it could be up to 2 years between getting acceptance and competing. As long as they get accepted and are at the correct age at the time of the competition they can compete in any year.
The analyst was currently watching a replay of an accepted entry exam from the Kuiper belt office. The replay had been tagged as needing verification. 'Hmm Null age 6, accelerate age 10. Little young to be accepted but it's not unheard of, also after the two years it would take to fly to mars they should be fine. That doesn't explain why it flagged, lets see what else, wait, wave 8 completed?'
The entry exam was set up as a gauntlet where the competitors would face stronger and stronger waves, in the history of the exam no student has ever gotten past level 7, in fact, 96% of students failed by wave 4. The analyst quickly started to play the replay and set up scanning devices to check the corresponding data to see if maybe the competitor had hacked the system.
"Those firing lines and shots are extremely accurate, maybe they have been enhanced. That is not against the rules. I'm more interested in how they beat wave 8 in 7 minutes"
The analysis watched the next 4 minutes in still not believing his own eyes. He watched on to see that the competitor modified the rail gun to fire full auto and set all his maneuvering thruster to random. Null had been wearing a standard issued military uniform which had maneuvering thruster inbuilt for low or no gravity situations. The entry exam was being simulated in martian gravity so the thruster had enough power to get them airborne.
Once the thrusters were engaged, he was spinning rapidly and out of control making it impossible for the drones to accurately target him. The same was not true for Null who even with full auto was still hitting kill shots at about 60% of the time. Null had been able to take out 2/3 of the drones before running out of ammunition.
Null wasn't finished with this outcome, he ripped out the power system from the closest drone. While avoiding fire and taking cover he was able to jerry-rig the power system to release an EMP at the correct frequency to deactivate the rest of the drones.
The analyst was sure something wasn't right. The aim and the paths were too good for a human and the latency between an AI and its user made it impossible for an AI system to help to this extent. It had to be hacking but all the scans came back negative. "Well, I guess we will see in a few years when they arrive".
