Chereads / The Things That Lurk Here / Chapter 3 - Chapter III

Chapter 3 - Chapter III

As soon as I looked up, I saw light breach through the water.

That must be the way up! I waved my arms and tried to swim with what last breath and strength I had.

FWOOOOOOOO-SHWIP!

Something prickly latched around my foot.

I flinched at the pain it caused me.

A thorn bush? Underwater? I looked down at it.

It was a black tentacle. I screamed, but water filled my mouth.

Was I going to die?

A pair of bright yellow eyes appeared from the darkness and stared at me. Whatever it was, it had a tight grip, and was not planning on letting me go.

I unclipped my daisy pin from my hair.

Mom had gave me this pin and it meant very much to me. It was used to defend myself from perverts and such that lurked around.

Through some kind of magic, or something, it could turn into anything from a spear, to a bow. She had got it from a small shop in New Orleans on a trip once.

This time, I needed a dagger.

I focused deeply on the pin as it shifted into a small, metal dagger.

Aha!

I took the knife and cut the tentacle from the base of my ankle.

The creature screeched and retreated back into the depths of the water. I swam back up to the surface, gasping for air.

The creature in the water was the least of my worries now. Who was that boy and why was he trying to kill me?

I looked back up to the ledge that I had fell off of. Dan was standing there, staring at me.

"What was that for?! You could have killed me!" I shouted.

"Dissapointing." He said, loudly "I would have figured you would've drowned sooner. Whered ya get that knife from huh?".

"What do you mean drowned?! Why are you trying to DROWN ME?!" I screamed.

"Oh honey" He said, smirking "I'm a land siren, if you didn't know. I'll let you figure out the rest."

He took a run-and-jump and hopped in the water with me.

I screamed. This nut was trying to murder me! I had just got here. I wasn't going to die so soon.

He splashed into the water just behind me and grabbed my foot.

I was being pulled underwater by him!

I took my dagger and lunged it at his eye. It put a large cut across his eye as he gasped. He pulled my foot farther under the water with full force, and I couldn't swim back up.

I used my other foot to kick him in the stomach and then he let go, holding his stomach. He let out a ferocious growl.

I swam swiftly back to a rock as fast I could.

Dan started rising out of the water as I was transforming my pin back.

"Oh" Dan murmured, " I knew I sensed something in you. You're one of those".

"What? One of what?" I screeched.

"A gaurdian" He replied. "I'll let you go... This time."

He looked up at me, smiling.

"Be careful" He said.

He sunk somewhere back under the water and dissapeared from sight.

The blood from his eye was still filling the pitch dark water. It looked like something from a horror movie.

I looked confusedly back under the water. He had dissapeared without a trace. How in the world would I get out of this cavern?

I had took rock-climbing classes when I was younger, so I was quite experienced and agile. The ledge hovered over me, ominously. A long way to go.

I grabbed onto a rock hanging off the side of the cavern and began to climb.

I eventually found where my aunt was after searching for about 3 hours, and plopped down on my bed.

"I know its hard" My aunt said, patting my back, " But everybody dies eventually".

The way she said it, I had made it out to be insensitive. I looked at her. She looked like she realised what she said and turned away, walking out the door.

I flipped over on my bed and got lost in my own thoughts, thinking about what Dan said. I was a...gaurdian? What was a gaurdian? I've heard of many creatures but I've never heard of that one before.

Was it because of my pin? My agility?

She patted my back a last few times and walked out of my room, closing the door.

I woke up to realise that I had fell asleep, and it was now 7:36 PM. I yawned and got up to stretch.

Then, pulled my blinds up. It was pretty dark outside for it to be so early here.

Then, I noticed the stars. I absolutely loved stargazing. Excitedly, I got up and made my way outside to the front yard with my blanket, without a second thought.

I sat the blanket down on a soft spot of grass and laid on my back with my arms crossed behind my head. This was the first time I had felt peace in a while. I slowly shut my eyes.

"Hey Daisy, what did I tell you about being outside" I jumped up and opened my eyes to find Dan standing over top of me, with his emerald green eyes looking down at me, and his hands held suspiciously behind his back.

I unclipped my pin from my hair, scooting backwards.

"Hey, hey. I'm not here to hurt you. See?" He pulled his hands from his back and shook them to reveal there was nothing in them, "I'm just trying to tell you it's not safe out here."

"Says the one who just tried to kill me" I murmured.

"Honey." He said, crossing his arms back behind his back, " You are special".

I flinched as he drew closer to me. He squatted down in front of me to meet me at eye-level. He held my chin up in his hand.

"You could join us. We could rule- OUGH" I interrupted him by kicking him in the stomach with my shoe, him falling backwards, and his glasses falling off.

He propped his self up with his arms and gritted his teeth.

I watched as his canine teeth sharpened.

I slowly scooted back, trying to create distance between us. He saw what I was doing and quickly grabbed onto my foot.

"DAN!" I screamed, staring him in the eyes.

He looked down at me and backed up a bit, then let go of my foot and sighed, lightly rubbing between his eyes.

"If I could see you, you'd be dead" He murmured, angrily.

I forced myself up off the ground, dusting off my clothes, while Dan just sat there, arms wrapped around his knees that was pulled to his chest.

I actually felt bad for him, but atleast I knew his weakness. "These yours?" I teased, picking his glasses up off the ground.

"WHERE?!" He bursted out.

He felt all the ground around him and didnt find them. How bad was his vision?

I placed them back on his face and he adjusted them.

"Thanks" He replied, looking away embarrassed.

I gave him a smirk and ran off. He eventually got up and walked away to goodness-knows-where, straight into the dark forest.

Wait? Shouldn't he be registered into the government database? Does his parents know what he is?

Hm. This should be interesting.

I also had noticed his scar was missing. That was why he dissapeared under the water earlier. To heal.

I walked back into the house to the smell of something delicious. I knew this smell well! It was cake!

I walked into the kitchen to see my aunt grabbing the cake out of the oven with a pair of oven mitts.

"Oh- uh? What was her name again?" I thought.

"Its Teresa hun" She said out of nowhere, continuing to place the cake on the counter to cool.

I jumped, and she smiled.

"W-what?!" I blurted out.

"You're not the only one with abilities hun. Your whole family is special." She replied.

I froze as I realized nothing I did or said would be a secret anymore.

"Er.." I stuttered as she looked at me puzzled, " Do you know that redheaded boy with the glasses?"

She took both the oven mitts off and put them back around the oven handle.

"Yeah. Stay away from him. Not only is he a land siren, but hangs out with a band of creatures."

"Creatures?" I asked.

"Vampires, werewolves, other sirens, elementals, shapeshifters, even a partial dragon. Anything and everything that could kill you." She replied, sighing, "Why?"

"He ...uh- tried to ....drown... me." I whispered.

She gave an aggravated look and went back to decorating the cake.

"What kind is it auntie?" I asked, trying to change the subject.

"Peanut butter and cream cheese frosting!" She replied, " Also, you can just call me Teresa"

I nodded.

After she had coated the entire thing in a layer of icing, she cut out a peice for me, and placed it on a small dessert plate.

"Thanks, Teresa" I said. She smiled and I walked away, eating chunks of cake at a time.

MY BLANKET! I spat out a large peice of cake on the floor, accidentally. I had forgot my blanket on the dirty ground outside after fighting with Dan.
