Chapter 9 - I Wish I Had A Box

"Aiu, what should we do? From what we just heard, if they find us, we are as good as scrap." Eve was now really nervous. She just wanted to get the hell out of here and take some time to get to a grasp on her current situation. But this did not seem like it was going to be easy at all!

"First, check the hall and see if there are any sensors. If it is clear, we can try to get out before those men come back." Aiu could only come up with this plan. It was either this or make their way back to the top floor and see if they could find another exit. But at this point, that seemed like a bad idea unless they really had no other options.

"Alright." Eve was nervous about opening this door, but she didn't really have any other choice. She slowly pushed the handle down, trying to make as little noise as possible. Once it was cracked open, she plucked her eye out once more and used it to look around to see if she could see anything. "Nothing, just traces of the footsteps from those men who were just here."

Eve's sensors were able to pick up on the footsteps of the men only because it left a trace of heat, but that heat was quickly dissipating. "I know which direction they were going in, which means that should be the way out. Let's hope there are some rooms or hiding spots for me to duck into if they come back..."

Eve made her way slowly down the hall. With her experience from the stairs in controlling how quiet she could walk, she was able to make her way down the hall quickly with little to no noise. "Eve door on the left, be careful."

"Mmm.. I wish I had a box right now..." Eve complained. As to why she wanted a box. That was because of an old game she played from many years back. It was a game where stealth was key to winning, and for some reason, if you covered yourself in a box, no one would know you were there.

"You're not in a game, Eve." Aiu sometimes wondered what went on in Eve's mind.

"I know! I was just saying..." Eve pursed her imaginary lips as she stood next to the door, only for it to suddenly open up. A person in a full body suit of armor and a rifle in his hands came walking out, only to freeze upon seeing Eve. The person stared at Eve and Eve stared back at him. "Eve, knock him out!"

Aiu's voice filled Eve's mind causing her to snap out of her daze and grab the person by their head and slam them towards the floor. The person had no chance to even react before their head was slammed off the metal floor, knocking them out instantly. Eve took a quick look around the room, and when she saw no one else inside, she quickly dragged the body in. If she had a heart, it would be pounding out of her chest at this time. She had never been so violent in her entire life, unless you count hacking people and ruining them for annoying her. She looked at the person on the ground and sighed inwardly. "Sorry, but you will need to be naked for a while."

Eve knew her only option to get out of here was to take this person's clothing and put it on. She stripped the person down to find that the person under the clothing was a young man. There was no sign of blood, so his head slamming off the ground must have only jogged his brain. "Eve, there are lockers on the far walls. You can tie him up and gag him and lock him in there. It should give you enough time to get out of this place."

"Yeah, I was thinking the same. We can not risk him alerting the others." Eve quickly put on the full body armor suit, which was thankfully baggy enough to allow her metal body to slip in with ease. She placed the helmet on her head and then went to work tying and gagging the young man up. The room she was in seemed to be a bunk room for those working here. She could only guess that they would take turns sleeping during shifts. It must have been this young man's turn and was about to return to work when they ran into each other.

But this stroke of luck granted her two things. A perfect disguise and a weapon. "It's a good thing I can not smell or feel, or this might be a very bad experience." With how thick this gear was, she figured it would be very sweaty inside. But for her to even be thinking this at a time like this showed just how much calmer she got after putting on her disguise.

"Stay alert, Eve. You have a habit of looking at things lightly." Aiu reminded.

"I know! I know! I should head out now. As long as I can make it to the gate, I can leave here. Even if they shoot at me in the end, with this gear and my body, I should be fine." Eve was a little scared, but she had no choice but to push forward. She opened the door to the room and began making her way down the hall. At least now, she did not need to try to be sneaky as she was dressed as one of them.

She made her way to the door at the end of the hall. She took an imaginary deep breath and opened the door. What appeared before her was a metal staircase leading down to the road below. She could hear the sounds of the wind blowing by and see and hear the water splashing against the rocks on either side of the bridge that connected to the distant shore. With the morning light finally piercing the dark, she could finally see the destroyed city in front of her. She could only sigh at the sight of the demolished builds and scorched earth. She took her eye away from the scene and took a step down the staircase: "Let's go."
