" Angel, do you like what you see? If you like it that much, I can offer myself to you." He teased as he relaxed back into his chair. He had pulled Lila down with him. Their position would have been uncomfortable for any other person but Lila was unfazed, or so she appeared.
Lila looked at him, a smirk forming on her lips. The more she interacted with this man, the more talkative she got.
She lowered her head towards his until their lips were almost touching.
This set his heart in motion. He swallowed hard, regretting teasing her. His tongue darted out to wet his dry lips. Kai's wolf was going berserk in his head. He closed his eyes to hide the sudden blaze in them.
Lila blew cool air onto his face before she moved towards his ear. She breathed closer to it, sending chills all over him. " My king, do YOU like what you see? "
Feeling his uneven breathing, she decided that it was enough and moved away. Lila sat down on the opposite side of the desk. Her stoic look was back as she watched him try to regain his composure.
' If you like to play, I do too. Don't wake the devil in me.' She thought.
' Heavens! She just used my tactics on me. I am doomed. Ugh. Now, I have to deal with a harden the rest of the day.'
He thought.
"Your highness, why did you summon me into your office?" Her curiosity took over eventually. She felt weird around him. The more time she spent near him, the more in her element she felt.
It wasn't a good sign for her. He was the enemy. She shouldn't get too comfortable around him. It was her turn to close her eyes as she struggled to keep her emotions hidden. Kai looked up at her and regained his might back.
The aura that emitted from him was no longer that of a playful wolf. He had the majesty that only a true king possessed. Even with how lazy he looked laying on his chair, she didn't miss the change.
The way his golden orbs that were ablaze with fire, froze and shoot out frosty ice. She was familiar with the second gaze while the first had unsettled her. Lila has no qualm giving him a similar gaze.
" You don't fear me like the rest. My powers hardly affect you. Why is that?" He asked. This was not what he had in mind when he summoned her. Yet, he couldn't help but ask. He had broken the rules for her.
No person was allowed into his territory without a thorough investigation. Ian convinced him that she was innocent. His instinct didn't agree and logic was against it as well. However, his heart had won in the end.
Her innocent, silvery orbs and that dimpled smile swept him off his feet. He swept logic under the rug and followed his heart. Now that he was interacting with her, he found some things odd. She had a faint scent of a wolf on her, yet he wasn't sure if she was a werewolf.
Lila showed no sign of surprise." My king, the other reason aside from the usual as to why dormant werewolves are sent away, is because we don't do well with authority. When we submit, it's more out of a will than a necessity."
"Unlike others whose wolves are linked to their alphas, Dormant wolves are more human than wolves. This makes us a threat to those in authority. If one can't submit, then naturally, the alpha would feel insecure to have the person around. "
"Most of my life, I have lived in the wild. I don't like people in authority because they tend to abuse it most of the time. Except for a few, I dislike authority figures. I chose to submit to you because I didn't want to disrespect you before others."
Kai looked perplexed. It was the first time he heard this piece of information. He never gave the dormant wolves any attention. That was until they became the slayer's main targets. Something else registered in his mind.
She said that she didn't want to disrespect him before others. " Why?" He asked out of curiosity. He felt happy that she knew well to show her submission. He didn't mind much how she addressed him when they were alone. However, with others, he had a reputation to maintain.
" Partially because you saved my life and put a roof over my head. I no longer have to worry about food either. So I am grateful to you. If not with your permission, I am sure I would be either rotting in jail or dead in the forest."
His heart warmed at her words but he managed to keep a straight face. " What is your second reason?"
" You are one of those authority figures who respect everyone and rule justly. Of course, I can't say that I fall in the category of people you respect," She added sarcastically. She sounded almost bitter, eliciting a chuckle from him.
His icy facade was broken. Looking at the time, he frowned. He had a meeting in two hours.
" Alright. We shall revisit this conversation once I have enough time on my hands. For now, why don't you enter through that door and make lunch for two? I have some work later. Since you agreed to be my chef, I am sure you don't mind. Make it something light. I don't like heavy meals for lunch."
She nodded and left for the kitchen he indicated with his fingers. He watched her leave wondering if she will meet his expectation. Since he felt it would be too direct to investigate her, the only way he could test her was by letting her into his space.
He wasn't naive. He harbored some feelings for her inside his heart. Albeit his emotional weakness, his mind was sharp and conscious of others around him. She may have his heart but not his trust. Until she proves to be trustworthy, he wouldn't let down his guards.
Letting her cook for him was to test if she would be tempted to poison him. Like Sienna did years ago. Inviting her into his office was for him to watch if she would try to get Intel.
Kai hoped in his heart that she proves to be trustworthy. He wasn't sure he could handle another betrayal. Especially from his mate. An hour went by as he worked on his papers while Lila cooked in the kitchen.
When the food was ready, she informed him about it. Kai silently walked towards the kitchen. What Lila didn't know was that the kitchen was directly connected to his bedroom.
There were only two ways in and out of it. One was through his room and the other, his study. She didn't need to know that though. Once again, Kai invited her to eat with him. He would refill her bowl whenever he filled his own.
Lila didn't mind him much. Lunch was a smooth and enjoyable affair before Kai decided to wipe Lila's stained lips with his finger. He then licked the said finger looking straight into her eyes.
This time, she couldn't hide how his action affected her in time. She looked away from him in embarrassment. He didn't say anything to tease her. He finished his food and left after giving her instructions on what to do.
Once Kai was gone, Lila's eyes lowered. Things were getting out of hand fast. Was it possible that she liked him? A frown etched on her face. How was that possible? He was supposed to be the enemy. Not a friend. She pushed the thought at the back of her head and started cleaning up the kitchen.
Once she was done, she went back to the study and looked around. She didn't get the time to do that before. To her delight, there was a library that filled one side of the room. A serene condition was set up for it.
There was a chair and a table where one would sit and read. She proceeded to finish the task that he gave her fast to get time to read some of the books. Who would have known that she would find small heaven in here? He didn't appear like the bookish type.
Out of her excitement to read, she paid little attention to the content on his table as she cleaned up the place. She arranged everything neatly and cleaned the floor. Once she was done, she rushed towards the library.
All her excitement turned to anxiety when she saw how disorganized the books were. She hated it when a library was disoriented. This time she took it upon herself to arrange the books in alphabetical orders.
Each book she encountered was drool-worthy. They were all very rare and informative books. She knew that once she gets the time to read them, she would turn into a goblin. She was a vivid reader after all.
Lila preferred reading books to interacting with people. Ironically, the books were creations of people. Yet, they gave more sincerity than she could find in them.
Humans tend to write about their deepest desires in books. By reading the different characters portrayed in a story, one can easily deduce the author's personality. For inside every person, lies a monster. Whether the monster comes out to play or stays suppressed, depended solely on fate.
That was why she believe in what her father had said to her before. No one was born a villain. Villains were made by circumstances and each has a story to tell. He taught her not to judge. As she arranged the books, she suddenly felt nostalgic.
Even her habit of reading was adopted from her father. He was the most wonderful man to walk on earth. The best father and husband. By the time she was done, four hours have gone by. She took one of the history books and sat down to read.
The sound of pages being turned filled the room. At some point, she fell asleep on the table due to exhaustion. Though she was no longer as weak as the first time she appeared, she has yet to fully recover. She had exerted herself too much for a day.
Lila slept peacefully on the desk with her head in between the pages. This was how Kai found her when he got back. He stood in place looking around his office looked and smelled clean and fresh.
His table was more organized than the way he left it. Even the couches were dusted and sparkled the lights. He only told her to wash the dishes and dust the floor. Who would have thought that she was a clean freak?
Kai felt happy. She wasn't lazy. He removed the little notebook hidden in his pocket and wrote, " A clean freak ".
He walked towards her peacefully sleeping frame, removed his phone from his trouser pocket, and took several pictures of her.
She looked so harmless in her sleep. As though she couldn't harm a fly. He gently raised the book that she was reading and cooked his head to the side amused. Who would have thought that she liked challenges?
Once again, he removed the notebook and jotted down, " Likes to read history books." Kai looked around his study for some time. He didn't want to wake her up but if she sleeps like that, she would hurt her neck.
He went towards the coach and pulled out several compartments, instantly turning them into a bed. The king walked into his bedroom and retrieved a blanket. He then walked towards Lila, carried her gently out of her chair, and watched as she clung to his arms.
He watched her I'm amusement as he made to place her on the bed. She didn't seem to want to let go. He didn't want to let go of her either. She was so light as though she was weightless. Was she still underfed? He made a mental note to monitor all her meals.
Kai pried her hands off his neck and laid her on the bed. He covered her frame in the blanket and walked towards his chair. He had work to do. With Lila sleeping peacefully before his eyes, he felt contented.
