"How was your day?" asked Vance sweetly once he and Melva were seated side by side inside the carriage. "Ah, actually, no need to answer that." Vance tapped his own shoulder that was pressed against hers, encouraging her to lean on him, but she only gaped at him. "You should have some rest. We are going to a ball tonight."
The realisation struck her so hard that she was speechless for a few seconds. It was disappointing to know the actual reason why Vance had been very nice towards her all day. Although, it was her own fault in the beginning for thinking that perhaps he genuinely wanted to treat her kindly, getting her hopes up for something so unlikely. Her suspicion was right, as always, that it was not the case. There was something he wanted from her. He needed her to come with him to the ball he had just mentioned.
Melva did not sound excited in the slightest when she asked her question. "May I ask what ball it is, Your Grace?"
