Chapter 25
I despise what the purge has done to people….
As I began to march out of the jet with Elijah, I suddenly ran to Hazel for a moment of freedom.
"See you back here soon, ok?" I said while kissing her cheek.
"Of course you will be Jamie Madden!" She demanded.
She gave me a tight hug which left me melting on the inside.
"By the way, I think we both forgot to give in our Romeo & Juliet homework!" I joked.
Hazel started to giggle which made me giggle as well.
"God, imagine what Mr Huddins thought about you skipping school and not giving in your homework?!" Hazel questioned.
"Nothing good!" I replied.
We gave each other a wave and departed two separate ways. As I gained to Elijah he of course criticised me.
"What I don't understand is that if you like her so much, why don't you just ask her out?" He requested.
"It's complicated. We have to battle a whole organisation before I can ask" I mentioned. Elijah was just about to speak when we heard a twig snap from up close. A figure staggered in the shadows. Me and Elijah put on our black covers and went closer to the threat.
"You see the menace?" I asked.
"No," Elijah replied.
Then from behind a woman punched my back which sent me to the ground. Elijah tried to fight her but she slapped him in the face and he was struck to the floor.
The woman started letting out these hysterical screams and straight away I knew she came from a mental institute.
"YOU TWO LOOK SO TASTY! MAYBE IF I HAVE A LITTLE PIECE?" She asked.
God, there was no way I was going to be eaten by an escaped mental case. I got my leg and slid it on the ground in a circular motion causing her to tumble to the concrete floor.
"Ahhhhhhhh!" She shrieked.
Then I brought out my bow and aimed an arrow at her forehead but I hesitated.
"JAMIE NOW!" Elijah commanded. But I wasn't able to do it. The woman started to regain strength and was coming towards me but then a gun went off causing a round bullet wound on the woman's head. She collapsed on the floor dead. Her blood was splattered all over my clothes including my mask.
"Jamie I know that you're a little wary of killing people but they want to kill you and they won't show the same mercy as you show them. Understand?" He commanded.
"Yeah, I was just paralysed," I muttered under my breath.
We kept walking, telling people in groups about evacuating the areas and they obliged. Everything was going well so far.
"LES GARS, ALLEZ MAINTENANT ! ÉVACUEZ LA ZONE ET PRENEZ CE DONT VOUS AVEZ BESOIN RAPIDEMENT!" Elijah ordered in French.
The family of ten began to worry as they frantically left their house and fled.
"Good job!" I mentioned.
"Thanks," Elijah replied.
We kept going from area to area, evacuating people and making sure that they took whatever they needed with them. Elijah and I discussed most of the time about his life in the war, serving in different countries in the early 20s but he never talked about the war with Afghanistan so I decided not to bring it up.
"What about you?" Elijah hinted.
"Well, my dad died when I was young, leaving my mom to work extra hours away from home. In a way, it seems she found it liberating because she was able to stay away from the house because of the memories it contains of my father. Then when I started school I got bullied so I had to spend most of my time eating in the library. Then I got whacked on the head with wood and metal a number of times which led me here!" I described.
"No offence but that's a really depressing childhood!" He answered.
We were walking into an area where it reeked even more than usual when Elijah stopped in his tracks and looked around.
"Jamie, turn around and run!" He ordered.
