My ears take in a sudden noise. I look to my left, and there is the red fox. He lets out another whine, while he shifts his weight around on his paws.
Remembering to pay attention to my surroundings, I realize we are at the place where the hiking trail and my secret footpath meet. That is why the fox has stopped; he knows I go another way from here.
"Ah, yes. You are right." I agree with the fox. "This is where we go our separate ways. I will see you tomorrow, and I will bring two eggs, remember?"
The fox looked right into my eyes and blinked once, very slowly.
I gave the fox a pat on the head, and told him goodbye, before making my way down the narrow, overgrown footpath.
Ten minutes later, I emerge from the foliage, and step out into a ditch on the side of the road. Turns out, I didn't have to wait there long. Before I knew it, I saw a familiar car driving down the road, and once it stopped, an even more familiar face, telling me to hop in.
