Luke recalled feeling surprised when David told him to follow the mystery woman Sinead. He had a moment when he wished that it was a joke, but David hadn't been joking.
The entire evening was not working out how he had envisioned it. Before, he would have had a rough idea when he could get home to his girlfriend. But now, he had no idea how long it would be.
Although, if Luke was honest with himself, that wasn't the real reason that following the young woman was bothering him. He didn't know what type of being she was, and he didn't think that David knew either.
As of this moment, there was no telling how powerful she was, or if she could tell he was following her. He figured she would attack him if she figured out she was being followed.
Luke knew that David needed to know whether her presence should be seen as a threat or not. He understood that from a leaders' point of view, it was David's job to make sure that the werewolves were safe, and to report to leaders of other species, if there was a threat.
"Crap." Luke whispered under his breath. While he had been lost in thought, he had almost missed the fact that the young woman he was tailing went from walking to jogging. He wasn't sure of the reason for the change in pace, so he turned his head this way and that, alert and looking for any danger.
There was nothing; so he focused back on his quarry, only to find she had gone from jogging to running. She was increasing the distance between them.
Luke started an easy jog in her direction. Suddenly, she entered an old, darkened alley. Soon, Luke reached the mouth of the alley. He cautiously peered around the corner to look into the alley. He could see she was stopped in the middle of the alley.
"I don't like this!" Luke thought to himself. He stayed around the corner of the brick wall, out of sight from the alley.
He started contemplating all sorts of malicious reasons for her to have stopped in the middle of a decrepit, dark alley. Almost all of those imaginings involved her knowing she was being followed, and him in for a variety of unpleasant surprises.
Luke took a deep breath in and then let it out again. Then he took a peek around the wall, into the alley. What he saw was that she was wearing a different set of clothes, a sweater and jeans combo, that she had her back to him, and that she was walking further into the alley.
"Where is she going?" Luke wondered quietly to himself. "Isn't this a dead end alley?".
But, Luke did not have to wonder for long, as out of the very shadows themselves, a cat appeared. At first glance, it looked like an ordinary cat.
Luke quickly changed his mind about that, when she started talking to the 'cat' and he even heard her ask it for help. Luke noticed there was some unnamed 'he' that she spoke to the 'cat' about for a minute.
That might be something important to remember for later. He heard her ask the creature for help with some sort of spell. The magic flowed from both of their bodies over several minutes, circling, looping, and weaving itself into a highly intricate pattern within a pattern.
Then, once done, it vanished into thin air. She thanked the 'cat' and again mentioned the mysterious 'him', asking if the creature would keep him safe.
The result was something Luke would not have seen, even in his worst nightmares. Instantly, the eyes of the 'cat' glowed a bright, blood red and a huge, vicious grin appeared.
The grin held many, razor-sharp teeth. The first set looked like the arrangement found in a normal cats' mouth, the consecutive sets resembled sharks' teeth and were randomly everywhere.
"Holy, crap!" Luke thought to himself. He got the feeling that this night just kept getting wilder and wilder. He took another deep breath and closed his eyes.
'Pop'
The sound was identical to the noise of a champagne bottle uncorking.
Panicking slightly, Luke opened his eyes, noticed the woman was alone in the alley and hid himself around the corner, out of view from the alley. With his heightened hearing ability, Luke could tell that she made a phone call, without having to peer back around the brick wall and into the alley. He heard her ask for a ride.
A few minutes later, when he heard the sound of her footsteps coming towards him, he did some quick thinking. First, he ran four run-down storefronts away, to a particularly recessed storefront that was bathed in shadow.
It would be good to conceal him. Second, he changed, in the comfort of the shadows into the form of a wolf. Then, Luke watched the young woman and waited.
After what felt to Luke like years, a silver car pulled up in front of her and stopped.
When the passengers' front window rolled down, Luke could see another female figure. He could not see who drove the car from his view from the shadows of the storefront.
But he did hear some giggling and back and forth witty banter. She got into the back of the car and shut the door. There was only enough time for Luke to heave a sigh before the car began to drive away. It was now time for Luke to run.
