Chapter 6 - CHAPTER 6

Davina sat on her usual spot, the seat in the middle of the countertop. She had her glasses on and her head buried in what she was reading. A book was beside her with a pen on top

'This would be a good book cover' I thought

"Hey"

Her glasses droop as she looked up giving her. I started at her. Davina, or as others call her, D, was sixty-two, but she gleamed more than those who were in their twenties to thirties. She was arguably shorted than average and looked delicate, but even if I could not place it, I could sense fire in her

She replied with a smile

"What are you doing?" I approached the counter

"Oh, you know, just reading some love letters" she answered closing the book

"Love letters?"

The words Holy Bible were inscribed in big red letters on the red cover. Subconsciously, my hands caressed the words, but I caught myself

"I am thinking of making toast, bacon, and eggs for breakfast. What do you say?" she asked

"That sounds good" came out weak

I cleared my throat and tried again

"Thank you"

"It will be ready before you know it,"

She brought out what she needed from the fridge before turning to me

"That is right, you said you needed a laptop, right?"

"You got one?"

"Wait a minute"

She went up and reappeared with a laptop in her hands

I smiled

"Here you go" she handed it over to me

"Thank you so much"

"Thank God, and Angel," she said

I paused

"Angel?" I asked

"She is the only one with a functioning laptop here"

"Is that right?" I placed the laptop on the counter

"If you do not want to use it, we have one in church. You can always go there to use it; the church is open all day, every day" she said

I was not sure of her intent

"It is okay. Thank you"

"But does she know who is using it?" I asked

She hummed in the affirmative

"I see"

"Why? Are you surprised?"

"I have lived enough"

She nodded at me

"I should continue breakfast"

"Honestly, it does not matter what anyone says, thinks, wants to believe, or argues; God is, and always will be, God. You cannot de-God Him, a-God Him, re-God Him, un-God Him, in-God Him. You cannot do anything"

I looked up at her, but her back was to me

"The reason He wants us to come to Him is that He loves us so much. The reason we need Him is not that it will benefit Him, but that we will be doomed otherwise. It will never happen by God's grace, but if some decide to leave Him, God will still be God. Sure, He will be sad, angry, and hurt, but that will not make Him less God. Never ever"

She finished and looked at me, a smile across her face

"Food is ready" she announced

Even if I wanted to, I could not say a word. This time, it was because I did not know what to say

"I will be back shortly, I have a business to attend to outside,"

She left and I was left in the house, blanketed by silence

There were a lot of reasons why I chose to be an author but there was only one positive reason; I loved writing. Anytime I thought of the next scene, how to end a chapter, how to begin another book. Anytime I thought of my characters and their development, I become thrilled. And that did not change even as I transferred my thoughts into words in the last place, I wanted to be. Most of all, I liked how writing strayed me away from my problems

"You must love what you do"

I jumped at the voice

D was sitting on the sofa, with her legs crossed. She had a mug in one hand, and the bible in the other

'When did she prepare that?' I wondered

"You are back,"

"I have been back for a while. You were just too engrossed" she replied

She waved her mug

I gave a small smile

"How is it going? Your book"

The smile grew

"Great" I replied

"That is good"

"Davina" I called

"Huh?"

"I was wondering if there was something I could do. You know, since I might be staying here, I thought I should do something" I said

She rose her head and looked at me

"I do not think I will be able to leave this place anytime soon, because the weather is so wonderful, and I figured it would be best to do something in return for my stay"

"Why do I have a feeling this has something to do with your pride?"

She walked over to the sink

"If you want to help just for your sake. But if you want to help because you want to help, you are welcome"

She rinsed her cup, wiped it, and returned it to its place

"Since this is a small town, we do not have that many jobs, but there are two available places if you want to work. It will do good to have more people in the Welfare Department in church, and the nurses can use some help. The church and hospital will be easy to locate since we have only one. If you still cannot find them, ask around. Do whatever" she said and climbed the stairs

I sighed

"Why are the things I want to get away from, being thrown at me?"

As a reply, a frame on the wall captured my eyes

'"Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest," Matthew 11-28'

I contemplated going back to the laptop, but I changed my mind

Whatever happens, I am going to win

I took a deep breath before I opened the door for the first time after I was flung to this place a week before
