"I am Divine, Angel's mom," the woman said
"I already figured that out," I said, but still took her hand
"Well then," the man beside her stepped forward, "I guess you already know that I am her husband,"
"I do not think anyone could have missed that"
I also took his hands
The couple laughed
"I am Samuel Amos" he introduced
"A celebrity does not need to introduce herself, does she?"
"I was never told you would be fun, though," Divine said
I shrugged
"Did both of your passion bring you guys together?" I asked to start a conversation
"I will not say so. And I am a pediatrician, while the guy here is more into counseling"
"You mean psychiatry,"
I shifted, that was a bad combination, a Christian psychiatrist
"That is nice" I responded
"Are you good? You seem quite uncomfortable" Samuel noted
"I am standing in front of a person reader, of course, my nerves are off the roof. What if you get to my deepest, darkest secret?"
We laughed
"Does Angel also work here then? Is medicine the family legacy?"
"No. She is into something else, art" Divine said
I followed her gaze back to the frames hung on the wall
'Quite impressive'
"I heard this is your first time out. Should I show you around, then?"
"I would love that, but I have a purpose for coming here today, so maybe another time"
"What is that?" Aaron asked
"Could I talk to anyone in management? I am considering helping the hospital" I said to Samuel
"Really? That is great" Divine beamed
"You mean like a job?" Samuel asked
"Kind of but I do not need to get paid"
"Of course, we will pay you. Why not?"
"If she says not to pay her, we do not have to. I am sure she thinks it would only amount to the coins in her purse" Aaron commented with a huff before walking off
"Is his always like this?"
They chuckled
"More or less, but it is just because he adores you. Which is aside from the fact that you are around the same age as his son"
"He has a child?" I asked
They gave a familiar smile, one I frequently used myself
"He sure has a strange way of showing he adores someone," I substituted
"I agree"
Divine's phone rang
"I have to go. Let us have dinner one of these days before you go back, okay?"
She kissed her husband and went to wherever she was needed
She turned to her husband, kissed him, and left
"Wanna look around your future workplace?" Samuel asked me
"Are you allowed to make that decision?" I asked but still walked alongside him
"What do you think?"
I smiled, "This really is a small town"
"Is it? And how are you liking it so far?" he asked
I shrugged
"It is not so bad, but can be annoying sometimes,"
"Perhaps, that has something to do with my daughter?"
"She is a hand full"
He asked other questions trying to make a conversation, but I was more brisk than responsive
"You are good at avoiding questions," he said
"You are good at your job" I replied
I sat down in front of him at the lounge he led me to
"I try. God does the rest"
"Did you grow up in this town?" I asked
He smiled, aware of what I was doing
"I did not, but my wife did"
"How did you meet then?"
"We met when she came for a program, I had given my life to Christ then. We became friends, and our relationship grew from there. She told me about this place, and my parents were more than happy for me when I told them I wanted to be the one to move here, so I did"
I nodded
"Do you visit your parents?' I asked
"Of course. The whole family goes over for a week, every two months. We were scheduled to go this month, but due to the weather..." he trailed off
"That makes sense," I said
He smiled
"Talking about the past reminds me of my time before I knew Christ"
"How was it?" I asked
"Funny"
"Funny?"
He nodded
"I only heard about Him, but I was already tired of Him"
"You see, my parents were Christians, and because of that, the gospel flew to me from every direction. And I was always like, 'Can this dude not leave me alone? Did we promise to always be with each other in our past life or something?'"
I laughed
"What?" I asked incredulously
"I am for reals; I was so tired. My parents were on my head every day. Every Saturday without fail, my parent's friends came over and I had to sit as they discuss the bible, the church, and projects for the church. Then come Sundays, sermons, and because my parents were well-known and all, I was made the leader of the prayer group"
"And then I got to a point when I could not take it anymore, I had had it up to over my head, so I told Him one day, "Listen up there, Big Guy. I have no idea why You keep latching onto me and disturbing my peace, so this is what we are gonna do, okay? I am going to give you one chance, just one. If I want out for any reason, we are over. And if You ever disturb me again after that, I am going to have to come up there and we are going to fight it out as men do'"
I full out laughed
"You what? You said that?" I asked amid laughing
It was the second sincere laughter all in one day
"I did. Some people do not believe me though" he said
"How can they?"
I gathered myself together
"So? Have you gone up to fight it out like men?"
"No, not yet. And I do not think I can"
"Why? It would have been the fight of the century"
"Trust me, I realized how risible I looked then after," he said
I recovered from the fits, but a smile was plastered on my face
"I wonder how you could have imagined going man to man with your Maker," I said
"I know, right?" he said
"I also wonder how you could be angry with your Maker"
You put your guard down
"Are you actually angry?" he asked
"You know, there is a difference between being angry at someone and wanting to feel anger towards someone. The latter might be mistaken for the former, but people do not usually know"
I opened my mouth to talk, but I could not come up with anything
He stood up
"That will be enough for now. I am needed right now, but I will send someone to you to do the needful before you start. Have a good day, Raelyn"
