Chapter 4 - Chapter 4. The Power of Steam:

Once Dave rented a room in the nearby tavern. He entered it. He thought back on what happened with the thieves and he noticed that he shot out Steam from his hands. When it happened he thought it was smoke but in hindsight it was clearly steam. He attempted it in his room and after a few unsuccessful attempts he managed to send out a small amount of steam out of his palm. The steam was not warm compared to most streams. It was just barely at the boiling point of water (100 Celsius). While for steam it wasn't hot it was still extremely warm. In Fact it was so warm that being exposed to it for a few seconds could cause burns that deal a fair bit of damage to regular humans. After this Dave went onto the bed and lay down on top of it. He took some time to think of his problems in the town and how to solve them. Somewhere simple such as not knowing the region well, this was simple he could simply take walks and occasionally talk with people to get to know the town better. While the harder problems like where and him to get a job were less easy for him to solve.

By noon he left his house. He asked around until he found his way to a magic research center. This one was owned by a local merchant & part time Magic Wilder Jorge Seller. Since 120 years ago, the king of Massadra declared that by law every one must have a family name. Many people called themselves by what their job was causing family names like Seller to be quite common. After standing In front of the building for a few moments Dave took a step in. A friendly old man greeted him as he arrived.

"Hello young sir, how can I help you?"

However right after he saw how Dave was dressed with common farmer attire , and even worse he wasn't even dressed well for a farmer from a town or city! The old man frowned at this farmer here in this center. However before he could speak again Dave moved his arm with his palm facing the roof as he released some steam. This odd farmer then opened his mouth:

"I'm willing to help you develop magic if you would be willing to pay me to do so"

The old man looked at him and said:

"Wait a moment I'll have to talk with the manager"

After these few short words the old man headed upstairs.

It's important to know that magic is a vague term used to refer to many things. Currently the tree of magic is split into two sides one called classical magic and the other is called science. Science is a newer addition and doesn't abide by any of the rules of classical Magic.

Other than the people who use science very few understand it to even a basic extent. However classical magic users outnumber the science users by over 1,000 to 1 and that's before even including monsters and other non human beings that either don't know of, don't know how to use, don't understand , or fully reject, Science.

Within classic science there are a few main branches and some smaller ones who usually each have some sub branches sticking out of them.

Out of these the most well known are probably wizards with their wizardry, Priests with their religious magic, sorcerers with their sorcery, mind melders with their physic and psychological magic, Cursers and their curses, Enchanters and their enchantments, and many many more. There are also Mages which is a general description for all the other branches of classical magic that do not fit one of the larger more commonly known types of magic.

Magic wielders are just barely common enough to not fall under that category of mages and instead have Their own recognized name of which to refer to themselves.

Magic wielders as the name implies wield magical objects with pre prepared magical script that they simply use/alter in order to use magic.

After the old man came down the manager followed him.

"Hello my name is Tom. May I receive your name?"

"My name is Dave"

"I would like to tell you that sadly we aren't hiring new researches and aren't opening new projects for study"

" Well that is regrettable"

"However Dave... We are willing to hire you to gather some resources for us. Maybe in the future you could also do some tests "

Dave found this offer quite attractive since he had no other job.

He knew the real reason they would want to hire him is simply to keep him around so when the time comes they could find him for help with testing.

However that was all acceptable therefore after a brief moment of contemplation he answered.

"Ok. Where do I sign up?"

"Well first you will need to go through medical and magical exam after which you will need to sign a contract for us to hire you"

"This sounds overly complicated"

"Rules are rules and I simply follow them. If you wish to start tomorrow than toy better do the exams today."

"Alright where do i go to get them done?"

"Right here follow me mister Dave"

After that Tom led Dave to a medium sized room on the second floor.

In the room was a white orb shaped magical item.

Tom explained to Dave the gist of what to do and then he operated it and told Dave to put his hand on the orb.

After this the orb began to shine and a few symbols were seen appearing on a metallic plant that Tom was holding.

It was as if a ghost was carving stuff into the plank.

"Alright Dave we're done. Now we can head to the medical exam. I'll call in the examiner since its his day off. I recommend you give home a thanks. Even though I know he'll come, he still deserves respect."

After his words Tom left the room while Dave went to the waiting room near the entrance.

The room was empty and devoid of all other people.

Dave could still see the old man in the next room but this room only had a bunch of chairs and sofas.

After about half an hour Tom returned with a tall chubby man.

The chubby man had blonde hair unlike Toms black hair yet the two's faces resembled each other.

Their green eyes were essentially the same.

This led Dave to ask.

"Is this your brother Tom?"

Tom shaked his head. We're not brothers.

"Cousins?"

To these words, Tom shaked his head again.

After that the chubby man replied.

"We have the same mother but we lived separately so let's not dwell on the past"

After his words he then introduced himself as Grandon.

Grandon was the person in charge of the medical exam.

Despite taking a day off, he still ended up returning here today.

Due to this Dave was very polite towards Grandon.

After the checkups Dave was approved, after signing the contract and getting himself a job now he headed back to the tavern.

He was now almost completely out of cash.

He didn't even buy food for the evening since he may have to leave and enter the city soon.

This was because of his new job.

At Least he found a job.

He already talked with Tom before he left therefore it was agreed that for the first ten days of work he will be paid at the end afterwards he would be paid monthly.

As long as he had the money from those ten days of work he could attempt at being efficient and he would probably be able to get enough to barely survive the month.
