Chapter 14 - Hidden portraits

Unknown's POV

In a quiet and vast office, two figures were across each other. One was a middle aged man while the other seemed much more younger. The middle aged man sat on the office chair while the other stood across him with his back tall and straight. His hands were beside him as he stood gallantly in front of the other man.

The middle aged man began, "I wish I could help you, Xiao Xi. But, this matter has reached the higher ups. As the captain, you are responsible for your subordinates' safety. But a police officer died under your watch and that terrorist group is still running amok. You'll have to accept the suspension."

"I have no problems with the suspension, Major General," the young man began. "It's just that I want to be the one to find the culprit myself. I won't let Brother Yu die in vain. I hope you can give me the chance to find the terrorist group."

The middle aged man rubbed his temples upon hearing his decisive tone and seeing his resolute gaze. The young man he knew was always like a walking bundle of happiness. He had never seen him frown before. But the death of his colleague seemed to have taken a toll on him.

"I want to help you but you're on suspension. You're not exactly allowed to do anything that has to do with the force."

The young man laughed, "Exactly is not a decisive word, general."

The older man sighed. "Okay, what do you want to do?"

"The Central Military School recruitment will begin in two weeks. I want to join the drill sergeants."

"Drill sergeants," the general asked, wondering why the young captain will choose to do such a stressful job. "How about you and the rest of your team go back and instruct them?"

"Instructor?"

"Hm. Go and take over the post of the chief instructor there. You can also find the terrorists along the way."

"Thank you, general. I won't disappoint you," the young man saluted and the general laughed, waving him off.

"I've never seen you so serious. Sit down. Let's talk about life."

The young man pulled off his cap and took a seat.

***********************************************

Yan Nuan sat on her bed, staring at her open closet in a dilemma as she tried to figure out what to wear. She was caught off guard in the morning, when her father suddenly announced over breakfast, that they were all going to the ancestral mansion. To visit her grandfather.

Yan Nuan thought of the memories of her grandfather which she remembered. He was unlike her own grandfather. Despite being strict, her grandfather had treated her well. But this current grandfather was an eyesore. Not only was he overly strict, he was extremely biased towards male children.

If one were to ask Yan Nuan how she felt about visiting him, she would definitely grumble that she couldn't be bothered to see that stereotypical old geezer.

As she thought, her gaze landed on a patch of white cloth stuffed into a hole in the closet. Curiously, she walked towards it. She pulled the cloth out and a small hole came into view. She inched closer and peeped in. At the other side which seemed to be a room, she could see rows of portraits hung around the room. She stood up straight once again, confusion swirling in her eyes. Since she arrived in this world two weeks back, this was the very first time she noticed the cloth covering the hole.

Staring at the hole in the wall, she resolutely made up her mind. To find out what was hidden in the wall. She packed up all her clothes and the closet was soon empty. She shut the door and then, pushed the closet out of the way. The wall came into view and she could see how big the hole was.

Yan Nuan's gaze narrowed. She placed her hand on the wall and felt a slight thud. She immediately stretched out and began pushing. The wall shook and slowly, the wall split slightly, revealing a thin space. As she gradually pushed, The space enlarged until it was big enough for her to pass through.

She took a glance at the shut bedroom door, before stepping through the space. The lighting instantly became dimmer. Then, she saw that the wall she walked through was actually the door to an inner room.

At the sight of the rows of portraits hung in at different frames around the room, Yan Nuan was amazed. She also saw that room was equipped with all sorts of basketball practice equipment. But, she walked towards the portraits. There were lots of them. She recognized that every of them were portraits of her father. However, there was a woman she couldn't recognize in all of them.

Then, she noticed a huge portrait at a corner of the room. It was an enlarged picture of that woman again. Yan Nuan could clearly see the woman's facial features now. Although Yan Yehan resembled her father the most, there were still some traces of her mother's features on her face.

Yan Nuan's gaze revealed a hint of realization. This was her mother?

She seemed very young and there were hints of innocence on her face. She had an oval face, sharply curved eyebrows and red cherry lips. Beautiful, young, full of vitality. Yan Nuan was impressed.

Yan Nuan had never heard anyone mentioned her mother before. There were no pictures of her in the house except of these hidden ones. Yan Yehan also had no memories of her. Could it be her mother had died while giving birth to her?

But why would such a young and healthy woman die so young? And, why did no one ever mention it to her?

Yan Nuan removed the portrait from the wall and stepped out of the inner room. She placed the portrait on her bed before closing the wall and returned the closet to its original spot before picking up the portrait. She had questions. And she was going to find answers.

She stepped out of her bedroom door and proceeded towards the stairs. She was about to climb down the stairs when a someone suddenly called out, giving her a shock.

"I can tell you what you want to know."
