Chapter 9 - Three Knives

The door swung open and Gerald and Alpha rushed in. Alpha's eyes shined like a kid in a candy store.

Gerald grabbed one of the carts that could transport heavy equipment and Alpha started to load crates of weapons into it. With his super strength he could move things that would require four strong men.

Gerald grabbed a second cart and went further into the vault while shouting. "Charlie, if they can work, send them in."

Charlie turned to the officer who had already been treated and nodded to him while she was attaching a splint to the man with a broken arm.

When Gerald saw the weary and bandage man enter, he stopped pushing the cart. "Body armor, bullets, take everything of use." He said while assigning the lighter object to be loaded by the police officer. The man nodded and got to work.

Gerald took a third cart and moved towards the ordnances. While putting the explosives into the crate, he checked to see if there was anything else that could help them out.

A few minutes went past in silence as the three continued to load the carts.

*Bang* *Bang* *Bang*

"They are coming again. We need to move before we get blocked in!" Dasher yelled.

Gerald pushed the three carts together and begin to strap them so they formed cars like a train.

"Alpha, put that strength to use and push." He said.

Alpha moved behind the three carts that were inline and bound together. With a grunt the wheels started to roll.

The officer took an assault rifle for himself and tucked several extra magazines of ammo into his belt. He then took a shotgun that had a large canister of shells instead of a magazine and checked to make sure it was loaded. When he walked out of the vault he tossed it to his companion that only had a single good arm.

Gerald saw him and didn't disagree with his actions. He turned to the crippled cop. "If you can't hit their heads, aim for the legs. They won't die, but their mobility will temporarily suffer."

"What's the plan?" Charlie asked as they came out of the vault.

"We are going out through the garage. Worst comes to worst, we will blow our way out."

Gerald unbuttoned his jacket and un-holstered his pistol and pulled out a knife with his left hand. He raised his gun and placed it on top his left wrist that held the knife pointed forward.

"I will go ahead and clear the path. Move fast and head to the garage. Try to find a good vehicle and load up the supplies. I have sent all the police vehicle access codes to your phones, so any vehicle that has fuel will do."

The officer with the rifle spoke up. "Any cop who stores his vehicle without topping it off will get in big trouble. All the vehicles should be ready to go as long as they are still drivable. But what about the others?"

Gerald scanned the walls with thermal vision quickly. He didn't want to keep it on for too long and kill the batteries. But he didn't see any heat signatures in the distant rooms. He turned it off. Thermal vision wouldn't help them find vampires. They were undead creatures after all. Without a beating heart, their bodies were the same temperatures as the surroundings.

"They are gone."

The officer didn't know if Gerald meant that they were dead or had been moved, but he didn't ask.

A few braves spawns ran through the dying fire and sprinted towards the door.

*Bang* *Bang* *Bang*

Bravo knocked them down before they could get close.

"Get ready to move." Gerald said.

He then stepped out of the doorway as the last of the flames flickered out.

For the first time since they had arrived here, the team saw Gerald move in a way that wasn't a casual walk. He jogged forward.

"REEEEEE!!!!!"

The spawns screeched as they ran forward.

*Ping* *Ping* *Ping* *Slice*

Each bullet was buried between the eyes of a spawn. When one dropped from the ceiling a knife plunged into its skull. Gerald then flicked his wrist and the spawn was tossed off to the side.

He didn't hesitate to run through the crowd while cutting a path for himself. Their strong claws tried to pierce through his clothes but could break the fabric. The inhuman strength behind their attacks battered him but Gerald remained unfaltering.

His pistol sung its song until the verse ended and the bullets were out. The gun was re-holstered and a second knife was drawn. Like a pair of lethal butterfly wings, the steel blades fluttered in front of him as trails of blood painted the walls.

Coming back towards the intersection, Gerald turned and pressed towards the garage. He had already made it through the clump of spawns and over half of them turned around and chased after.

After clearing the horde, he stored his knives before reloading his pistol and pulling the second one.

Alpha was pushing with all his might, the three carts were heavy enough and to make matters worse, the floor was littered with corpse. Once he got up to a decent speed, the dead spawns were bashed aside. All the while the others were firing non-stop into the monsters that remained.

As they approached the intersection Alpha hollered out. "TURN!!!!"

Bravo and Dasher ran up to the lead cart and started to push from one side and pull from the other. The momentum made it so that it wasn't easy for the cart to stop. They exerted all their strength to force it around the corner.

When they finished turning, they saw the corpses scattered around the hallway and Gerald peering through the window of a door ahead.

They didn't see anymore spawns around but they didn't think that they had cleared them all.

Once the cart came closer to Gerald, he pushed open the door and entered with his pistol drawn.

Alpha pulled back with all his might because a row of squad cars blocked their path forward. The train of carts slowly came to a stop.

Bravo glanced through the dark garage with its fifteen foot ceilings and scanned the area. He ignored the squad cars and unmarked detective vehicles. In the corner he saw his target. An armored personnel carrier.

"There!" He pointed to the left.

They would be able to load up the supplies into the vehicle with thick and sturdy walls that sat atop large puncture resistant tires. And best of all, the vehicle had a lot of torque and horsepower. Even if dozens of spawns threw themselves in front of the vehicle, it wouldn't stop it.

With a knife, Gerald unbanned the carts so they could be moved easier through the garage.

Alpha took the heaviest that contained all the guns and ammo that he loaded. The two weary police officers worked together to move the body armor and ammo while Bravo took the explosives.

Gerald, Charlie and Dasher stayed close by with their weapons ready.

Charlie and Dasher kept their heads on a swivel while Gerald watched the ceiling.

Reaching the personnel carrier, Bravo tapped his phone to the back doors to unlock them.

"Start loading." Dasher said while he kept his back to the vehicle.

Gerald stayed a few paces away while the others began to move as fast as they could.

Loud screeches could be heard coming from the hallway that led to the garage.

*Ting*

The sound of a pin falling to the ground could be heard before a incendiary grenade was thrown towards the doorway.

*Boom*

Flames raged and lit up the garage.

With the better vision, Dasher suddenly yelled.

"Above!"

A spawn dropped dawn onto the group that was loading the cargo. Alpha moved first. He didn't draw a weapon; he just swung his large fist like a hammer.

*Splat*

The spawns head exploded like a watermelon before it was flung to the side.

"REEEEEE!!!!!"

Spawns began to rush out from under the squad cars while others fell from the ceiling and rushed towards the group.

*Bang* *Bang* *Bang* *Ping* *Bang* *Bang* *Ping* *Ping*

Bullets flew as the officers, and three others continued to load while Dasher and Gerald fired.

"RAWRRRRRRR!!!!

A loud roar echoed through the garage and the spawns stopped their screeching. The spawns who were rushing towards the group turned back towards the flaming hallway. They dove headfirst into the flames while spawn from the other side did the same. They smothered and extinguished the fire with their own lives.

"You dare to step on my turf!" An angry voice shouted from the hallway.

The others turned to look but Dasher commanded them to keep working and even began to help out.

A man with baggy jeans who was wearing an over sized shit paired with a large gold chain around his neck stepped over the bodies of charred spawns and entered the garage.

His pointed teeth and unbeating heart gave him away that he was a vampire. Other than that, he was undistinguishable from a normal human. His hair was slicked back and a pistol was tucked into his waistband.

Alpha saw him from the corner of his eye. "That's…"

"An acolyte." Gerald answered.

"How dare you en-."

*Ping*

The man jerked his head as a bullet whizzed over his shoulder.

He spit toward the ground. "Insolent, if you were on my crew and interrupted me you could only wish for a quick death."

"Ha." Gerald smirked. "Does that mean you will be kind to me since I am not on your crew?"

"You don't get it, you're d-."

*Ping* *Ping* *Ping*

The man jerked his head again, but this time, only Gerald's first shot was aimed at the man's head. The other two were to each side. The vampire acolyte dodged directly into the second bullet.

"FUCK, that hurts!" The man shouted as the wound in his forehead started to slowly close.

A handgun didn't have enough strength push through his strengthened bones. As the skin merged back together, the crumpled bullet was pushed out and fell to the ground.

"You-." The man stopped talking when Gerald raised his gun again.

"What? Still want to run your mouth."

"Kill them!" The man shouted while running forward followed by a large group of vampire spawns.

The acolyte led the charge and pulled the gun from his waist band.

*Ping*

A bullet ripped into the polymer gun, turning it to scrap.

Gerald rushed forward to meet him while pulling the second pistol. He fired to the side and took down the spawns while he ducked under the hand of the acolyte.

*Ping* *Ping* *Ping*

The magazines were emptied in a flash as the spread-out spawns fell one by one.

Gerald managed to dodge the first blow, but he was to close to avoid the lightning-fast knee that rose into his gut.

"Ohf!"

He was sent flying back towards the armored personnel carrier.

"How dare you kill all my servants!" The Acolyte raged as he ran towards Gerald.

The two officers went for their guns, but the others kept working as fast as they could.

Gerald was on all fours and coughed out a mouthful of blood when the acolyte came over. He pulled his foot back and planned to kick the man's head off with his amazing strength.

Gerald rolled at the last minute and grabbed the vampire's leg. A flash of steel pierced through the air before burying itself in the vampire's hip.

Wrenching down on the blade the slid between his pelvic bone and leg bone, the leg was dislocated as the vampire tumbled forward. The acolytes advanced healing would allow the man to recover quickly but it still gave Gerald an opportunity.

A second knife buried in between the spinal discs in the creatures lower back, temporarily paralyzing its legs.

The knife in the hip was pulled out and stabbed down with a flash between the mans shoulder blades, disabling his arms. Leaving both knives in would make it take longer for the creature to regenerate.

Gerald reached down and pulled the last knife from his leg holder and placed it at the top of the man's spine, right below his skull. He stabbed with all his might, but it only went in a few inches.

Gerald got up to his feet and wiped the blood from his mouth. He then lifted his foot up and stomped down on the handle of the knife.

*Shing*

The blade separated the skull from the spine. Gerald gave it a kick and it rolled away.

He then packed up his knives, reloaded his pistols and walked to the truck. The others had just finished loading up the last of the supplies.

"Let's go."
