"Can you drive?" Bravo asked the officer who still had two working arms.
"Yeah, I have never driven this before, but I have operated tractors and a few moving trucks. Shouldn't be too different."
"Good enough." Gerald said as he walked over. "Dasher, you ride shotgun. Charlie, take the back with the wounded officer and the cargo. Alpha, Bravo, you are with me. We will escort the vehicle out and grab our ride."
Dasher got into the front of the carrier with the officer. He tapped his phone a few times and a noise could be heard from the far end of the garage. The gate was raising up but the crunched-up cars still blocked the exit.
"Let's build up some speed, switch to second gear but don't go any higher. We want to ram with both speed and torque. We won't be able to bust through with the initial contact. We need to power through without stopping though. If we stop halfway through, we might get stuck." Dasher said to the officer.
He then turned and opened up the small latch to the back and looked in.
"You secure in there?" He asked.
"As secure as we can be." Charlie said while glancing to the crates of explosives that were strapped into a few of the seats.
"Let's roll." Dasher said to the officer in the driver's seat.
Alpha and Bravo stood on either side of the truck and jogged beside it. As the truck approached the barricade they fell back while Gerald brought up the rear.
*Bang* *Crunch* *Rip*
The sound of metal and tearing could be heard as the truck started to force its way through. The engine rumbled as the tires squealed.
"Drop to first and don't stall it." Dasher ordered.
The officer complied.
The tires caught traction and continued to plow forward as the metal squealed while it was torn apart.
The truck lurched forward as it broke through the barricade.
Alpha and Bravo ran through followed by Gerald.
Dasher directed the carrier to their SUV that was still parked in the lot.
Bravo jumped into the driver's seat while Alpha got into the back. Gerald moved into his seat and then opened the glove box and changed out his empty magazines for full ones.
With a flick of a switch, the gun appeared on top of the SUV while Alpha stood up through the open hatch.
"Damn, what kind of car is that?" The officer asked when he saw the SUV with the heavy gun mounted on top.
"A special one." Dasher answered with a smile. "Alright, they are ready to move. We are heading towards the barricade on Fourth street. You know the way?" He asked.
The officer put the truck back into gear. "Yeah, I know the way."
The personnel carrier lurched forward and started to move while the SUV brought up the rear. Alpha spun around and kept watch over the back. The first few minutes were uneventful but soon a loud collective screeching could be heard.
Gerald picked up his phone and spoke. "We will have company soon. Pick up the pace."
"Understood." Dasher responded and then turned towards the driver. "Stop weaving through the cars, pick up speed and ram through them. Aim for the trunks and not the front of the cars. With the weight of the engine in the front it will act as a pivot point and be easier to spin the cars out of the way if you aim for the lighter backend." He said while checking his gun.
The officer grunted in understanding and shifted to a higher gear. The engine roared as the picked up speed.
Gerald called back to Alpha. "If you aim at a building, use thermal on your glasses to make sure that civilians aren't hiding inside."
"Understood!" Alpha yelled.
Charlie took out several guns that they took from the depot and loaded them up. She set them in the seat next to her while she opened the gun port on her side of the carrier. The officer on the other side did the same before he went to the back door to take a look out the bullet proof window.
"Holy fuck!" He cursed.
Hundreds of vampire spawns were sprinting down the street faster than they were driving away. More were leaping across the rooftops while others were crawling at tremendous speeds across the face of the buildings.
*DongDongDongDongDongDongDong*
The fifty-caliber machinegun started to unleash hell. The spray of bullets wasn't accurate enough to guarantee headshot, but the large bullets were savage in their attack. A hit to an arm or leg would rip off the limb entirely.
*DongDongDongDongDongDongDong*
Gerald rolled down the window and started firing to the sides. Spawns were jumping from the rooftops trying to land on the vehicle. By the time they hit the vehicle, their lifeless bodies crumpled and bounced away.
"Fuck, fuck, fuck!" The police officer driving cursed as a pair of spawns jumped and landed on the hood of the truck.
They stood up and began to pound on the truck's windshield.
Dasher leaned out his window and bent forward, opening fire, clearing off the hood before returning to his seat.
*Bap* *Bap* *Bap*
*Bang* *Bang* *Bang*
*Ping* *Ping* *Ping*
*DongDongDongDongDongDongDong*
Gunfire echoed through the streets as the vehicles surged forward.
Dasher picked up the radio attached to the dashboard and switched channels.
"Command, come in. Command, come in."
"This is Command, report your unit number, over."
"We are coming in hot towards the barricade on Fourth street with lots of uglies on our tail. Two wounded officers have been retrieved along with a lot of ammo and guns. Should be there in two minutes. Tell the officers at the barricade to prepare for a fight."
"Understood, over."
Silence was heard after the message was passed. Thirty seconds later the operator returned.
"A welcoming party has been arranged. Safe travels, over."
Dasher grinned as he hung up the radio. The officer who was driving was also starting to feel better as he drove straight over several spawns.
"You damn bastards thought you could stop me!" He started yelling towards to monsters. "You're fucked. You're so fucked! No more holding the line! It's your turn to be stepped on! Yeahhh! Get some!" He shouted as he ran over another pair of spawns.
*DongDongDongDongDongDongDong*
The two vehicles turned to corner and could see the barricade in sight.
An acolyte could control up to a hundred spawns. But with the numbers that were now chasing them, Gerald knew that he had attracted the attention of one of the elder vampires.
As they drew closer to the barricade, dozens of spotlights lit up from the top of various rooftops. A few illuminated the two vehicles that were coming closer while the rest pointed towards the street in the distance.
Hundreds of vampire spawns crawled over the sides of the buildings while even more ran down the street.
Guns started firing from the roof top. Each building had at least ten officers on top. Even the cops who had the night off had gotten up in a hurry when they heard that two officers were coming out of the restricted zone with supplies.
*Bang* *Bang* *Bang* *Bang*
*Blap* *Blap* *Blap*
*Pow* *Pow* *Pow*
*DaDaDaDaDaDa*
*Ping* *Ping* *Ping*
*DongDongDongDongDongDongDong*
The sounds of automatic weapons brought the street to life.
As the personnel carrier got closer to the barricade, two cars suddenly parted to allow passage. The truck drove through without slowing. But Bravo suddenly turned the steering wheel hard and locked the brakes. He shifted into reverse as the SUV spun 180 degrees. He backed into the hole and plugged it while Alpha also spun his gun around and started firing into the oncoming crowd.
Bravo reached toward the dash and flicked a switch. The grill on the front of the SUV folded down. Lifting a cover, Bravo pushed one of two buttons that had just turned green.
*Woosh*
A small missile launched out of the front of the SUV and into the heart of the oncoming horde.
*BOOM*
Limbs, bodies, and heads were blown across the street as the light from the explosion lit the area and could have been mistaken for daylight.
The spawns began to recede as the bulk of their numbers were decimated. The police officers on the rooftops kept the lights on them and allowed bullets to chase them until they were out of sight.
Bravo shut the cover with a smile, hiding only a single button that remained green. "Still got one left for later." He said to himself like a child who was rationing his candy so he wouldn't run out on the first day.
"Ha, Ha, take that!"
"That's right, run you sons of bitches!"
"This is our city!"
"Go back and hide!"
The officers on the rooftop hooted and hollered. They were proud to be able to send the monsters packing.
Bravo continued in reverse and passed through the barricade. The officers on the side closed the barricade up tight.
A few lines of cars wouldn't do much to stop the spawns, but it made the police officers more comfortable knowing they had a line of defense.
Bravo parked next to the carrier where the two officers had already disembarked. Their comrades had surrounded them and were checking to make sure they were okay. Gerald and his team went and started to unload the cargo.
A portion went into the back of the SUV but most of it was given to the officers who were on the frontline. Along with the supplies, a few cartons and bottles were also sent up to the men and women who were putting their lives on the line.
Even though it was late at night, almost morning, none of the officers were in a mood to sleep.
A young officer walked up to Gerald just before dawn. "Sir, are you the boss of these guys?" He asked while motioning to the people Gerald had come with.
"That's me."
The young officer passed Gerald a phone.
"Seems like you spooks can actually get a few things accomplished."
Gerald recognized the voice. It was Commander Jackson on the other side of the line.
"We do what we can."
"If you have time, come back to the command center, there are some things we need to talk about."
"I am on my way."
Gerald hung up the phone and handed it back to the young officer.
He looked around and saw that Alpha was talking guns with a few young men and women who were eager for action.
Bravo had the hood of the personnel carrier up while he was talking cars with a few officers.
Charlie was sharing a bottle on the side of the road with a couple of the wounded
And Dasher was trading stories with the old timers who were still on the front line.
Gerald reached into his jacket and pulled out a smoke and lit it up. He turned to the young officer who was still at his side. "I need you to take me to the command center." He got into the young man's squad car and rolled down the window while sitting in the passenger seat before the officer could even respond.
Gerald tapped on his phone a few times.
Dasher received a message.
{I'm visiting Command. Back in a bit. Do as you see fit.}
Dasher looked up, found Gerald and gave him a nod. When Dasher was about to put his phone away. Another text came in. He stared at his phone for a good long while before replying.
{Understood}
Gerald put his phone away. The young officer then started the car and began to drive towards the safe zone.
"Uhh, Sir?"
"What is it?" Gerald asked after taking a drag on his smoke.
"Will you and the others be heading back into the restricted zone?"
"That is the plan."
"Then… Umm… Will you take any officers with you? I know there are plenty around who would like to have a chance to stick it to those monsters."
"Plenty around? Would you be included in those? Do you want me to take you into the restricted zone?" Gerald asked.
"Sir, I saw those bastards rip my mother apart. Not for food, or for their survival. They went through her simply because she was in the way of the little girl they way chasing. I want to kill them all. I don't care if I die because of it, but we all know that holding the line will never give us a chance to win, it will only prolong our demise. We need to take our officers away from the defense line and straight to the enemy."
Gerald didn't answer any only kept smoking.
The officer spoke again. "You know, the citizens don't talk about it, but those things are pure evil. Children go missing even in the safe zone. Something sneaks in in the dead of night and plucks them from their beds. There are whispers that it is mostly children still living in the restricted zone. We don't know if they have always lived there or were moved there afterwards. I imagine that those things find little kids to be tastier. Command won't send us in to pull them out and just orders us to hold the line. But you and your people have gone in. You have even brought officers out. You-."
Gerald cut him off. "We plan on killing every single one of those monsters and our mission won't be completed until they are eradicated."
They had reached the underground garage. Without saying anything further, Gerald got out of the car after leaving an unopened pack of smokes in the officer's cup holder.
He arrived at the elevator and before the officer inside could ask Gerald spoke.
"Top floor."
