Chapter 11 - Chapter Ten

Susan's POV

"Nurse Chloe!" I called as I walked up to her.

"Do you know about the patient that ran away from the ward today?" I asked.

"Yeah, I was the nurse doc Alex assigned to him but he ran away when I wanted to carry some blood test on him but not to worry Doctor Alex and doctor Jasmine are already out searching for him, I just sent them the man's address to doc Alex so I am sure they'll be able to save him."

"Okay, can I see the address?" I asked.

She was about showing me in the patient's file and then she stopped.

"Why do you need to know the man's address?" She asked.

"You know, just in case they need back up, you know how hostile all these runaway patients can be." I said and she nodded.

"Sure." She said as she showed me the address.

"Thanks Chloe." I said as I walked away.

I quickly typed the address and sent it to Doctor Ryan.

I wonder what Ryan has in store for them.

Alex's POV

My phone beeped but I couldn't take it as I was driving.

"Jasmine can you help me get my phone, it's on my chest pocket." I said.

"Okay." She said as she leaned towards me to take the phone from my pocket and I almost couldn't breath.

I can smell the cologne she used and scent of her hair and it's so intoxicating.

She got took the phone and sat back on her seat and I was finally able to breath properly.

"It's a message but I can't view it unless your phone is unlocked." She said.

"The password is 1210."

"Okay." She said as she typed it on the phone to unlock it.

"The message is from Nurse Chloe, it is the man's address." She said.

"Input the address in my car's GPS." I said and she did.

There was silence for a moment before Jasmine spoke.

"What are you going to do when we get there? How are we going to convince him?" Jasmine asked.

"Trust me I won't be wasting my energy on him, I brought a Midazolam injection, I will just give him one shot and off he goes to sleep, when he wakes up, he'll be in the hospital." I replied.

"Midazolam injection is an injection that makes people unconscious so am sure that part of your plan will work but how do we carry him to the car?" She asked.

"What do you mean we? You were the one that insisted on this little expenditure so of course I will give you the honor of carrying him to the car, alone."

"What? But..... But I can't possibly carry him alone!" She exclaimed.

"Then pray that we should be able to convince him, otherwise you will definitely be the one to carry him to the car but out of my kind-heart, I can help you open the car door." I said with a smile and she scoffed.

"Is that the only help you can render? How can you say you let a lady carry a huge man to the car alone!" She said obviously pissed off.

"I don't see you as a lady, to me, you are just my assistant surgeon and a stubborn junior doctor."

I continued driving and we got to a very poor and silent neighborhood.

"Oh Lord of Abraham, this place smells like dog poop." I said as I tried to cover my nose which wasn't actually possible since I am the one driving.

We got to the house the car GPS directed us to and we got down.

"This place is definitely not fit for human inhabitation." I said.

"Maybe that's how he got the Steven Johnson syndrome, maybe he got a reaction from some pathogens in this dirty environment." Jasmine said.

"The air here must definitely be filled with different bacterias, I will need to take a vaccine and spend hours in the bathroom when I get home." I said and Jasmine laughed.

"If this place is so irritating to you then let's go in, the earlier we finish this, the sooner we get to leave." She said as she knocked on the door.

At first there was no response then the door was opened and a little girl came to view.

The girl must be probably around 5 years and she was carrying another small baby on her back.

"Who are you?" The girl asked.

"We are doctors and we've come to see your father" Jasmine said.

"Daddy is not at home, he went out some minutes ago." She said.

"Can we come inside and wait for him?" Jasmine said and I looked at her wide-eyed.

"What do you mean wait for him inside this dirty house that looks like a cottage!" I said to Jasmine.

"Come on doctor, you are exaggerating here." She said.

"It seems your friend doesn't like our house perhaps, daddy said I should allow no stranger in." The girl said and Jasmine bent down to talk to her.

"What's your name?" She asked.

"Linda." The girl replied.

"And who is the owner of the baby on your back Linda?" Jasmine asked.

"My little brother." Linda said.

"What about your mom?" I asked.

"Dead, 6 months ago." She said and I felt pity for her.

"Your Dad is right about you not letting in any stranger inside your home, we will just wait for your Dad in the car." I said.

Jasmine and I walked back to the car and sat down inside.

"You only said that cause you don't want to go inside the house." Jasmine said.

"Well you didn't really think I was going to enter that dirty threshold did you you?"

"Come on doc, its not their wish to live in such a place, if they had the chance, they will be living in a big beautiful Mansion too. Tell me you didn't feel any ounce of pity for them." She said and I sighed.

"Maybe this is why he ran away." Jasmine said. "Cause he doesn't have enough money to pay the medical bills."

"That's a stupid reason, he could've stayed and receive the treatment, get healthy and then worry about the hospital the bills."

"Look there he is!" Jasmine said pointing at the man who was coming towards the house.

We got down from the car and walked up to him.

"What are you guys doing here?" He asked.

"We came to take you back to the hospital to receive treatment." Jasmine said.

"I think I made it clear by running away that I don't want to receive any treatment." He said.

"I don't think you know how severe your sickness is, you've had the Steven-Johnson syndrome for more than two months, you are already in the last stage and without proper treatment you will die. Do you really want your children to grow up alone in this stinky neighborhood without a father to cater for them?" I asked raising my voice.

"Do you think I want this?" He tried to yell but only ended up coughing out blood.

"You really need to go back to the hospital now, it's getting worse." Jasmine said.

"I want to get treated too but I don't have the money, you have seen where I live, I can barely take care of my children how will I get the bills for the treatment." He said.

"Get treated first, then worry about the bills later." I said.

"That's easy for you to say but I can't do it, Linda is just 6 years, and John can barely walk, he's just getting to his 7th month, I have no relative doctor, if I go to the hospital, my children will be left alone and those poor children will be left with the burden of trying to pay my hospital bills but what can they possibly do, they are just so small, so I think it's better to die now so that I can leave the little money I have for them."

"But your children will be orphans, no one to look after them." Jasmine said.

"Better to be orphan at a small age than to be left with the huge burden of paying your father's hospital bills at such an age so you can't convince me, I'll advise you both to leave now, I don't have the strength to continue talking to you both anymore." He said and went inside his house.

"Why didn't you stop him, you should have give him the injection to make him unconscious." Jasmine said.

"We've tried our best Jasmine but the man really doesn't want to receive treatment, let's just respect his wish and leave." I said.

"We can't just leave doctor, he's going to die, we have to..."

"Enough!" I yelled and she flinched.

"The only reason I came here is because you insisted and we've tried our best, now am saying we should leave and you are still talking back?! Have you forgotten that you are not the superior here but I am?" I asked

"I am sorry Doctor" she said sadly.

"Now get in the car and let's leave this stinky place." I said as I started walking towards my car.

A girl suddenly ran out of the man's house and came up to us.

"What's wrong Linda?" Jasmine asked.

"It's Dad... He... he fainted, please help him, please don't let him leave me and John." The little girl cried and I sighed.

"Take us to him." I said and Linda ran back into the house and we followed her in.

It was just a room there were no chairs, only a bed.

Little John was layed on the bed and he was crying, while their Dad was unconscious on the floor.

I quickly knelt beside him and checked his pulse.

"His pulse is getting weak, we need to get him to the hospital immediately, help me lift him up." I said to Jasmine.

We were trying to lift up the man and I heard some movements outside.

The it sounded like someone locked the door from outside and poured a liquid inside the room through the only small window the room has.

I went closer to the window and smelled the liquid while Jasmine kept yelling "Who's there?"

It's gasoline.

"Step back! Climb the bed!" I yelled as someone threw in a lighter and the place caught fire.

Jasmine and I dragged Linda's father to the bed at the back of the room.

"What's going on?" Linda cried.

"Jasmine, carry the baby and cover his nose, his system are still developing and he won't be able to endure inhaling too much smoke, he might die." I said to Jasmine and she quickly did as I said.

The fire was advancing towards the bed and the place was as hot as hell.

What should I do God, I left my phone in the car.

"Did you bring your phone with you?" I asked Jasmine and she shook her head.

"Do you guys have a phone here?" I asked facing Linda but she was already laying unconscious on the bed.

"Doctor" Jasmine called and I faced her.

"The baby, he is no longer crying." She said.

I tried to feel the baby's pulse but I couldn't concentrate, I'm starting to feel dizzy too.

The fire is almost at the bed.

What are we gonna do?

Am I really going to die here?
