Chereads / A Shadows Light / Chapter 8 - Greyson

Chapter 8 - Greyson

The hum of the Jeep's engine was getting to me, I swear I was humming along . People were also getting on my nerves too, humans, lost faith in them years ago.

Alex was the only one of them that cared. They were the one who coached me back into going to school, even if it was only Tuesday and Friday.

I was the only vehicle on the main road, leaving me with all the time in the world to think. Seeing the Westberg Welcome sign on my right I turned onto the road.

Westberg was just….well Westberg, never having concrete roads, either made out of gravel or dirt over years of tires running over them. Most of the surrounding forest along the road was so dense almost no one was able to see the river in the heart of the woods, well no one but me.

*Alex*

He took the long way home…again.

*Sister Avaline*

The twins were not back yet wiched worried me greatly, but I had to stay strong for the little ones. Shane and Grace were playing in the spare room upstairs, quite loudly may I ask. Chuckling to myself I continued cooking, planning on having a simple dinner. Steak, baked potatoes and green beans. Or maybe mashed potatoes? Didn't decide yet, hearing tiny feet down the stairs I stopped prepping the steak. Grace came down the stairs and tugged on my skirt, with a concerned look on her face. Rinsing my hands under the cool water of a close by sink, lowering myself to her eye lever. In my sweetest voice I asked "What's wrong Gracie, what can I do for you?"

Her face was still one of sorrow, soon tears escaped her eyes and ran down her cheeks. Lifting my hands to wipe them off, hearing the littlest whisper I ever heard "I-It-It's Shanee, th-the twins too". Still I didn't understand, she was stuttering too much.

Trying again, asking "Gracie, I don't understand you dear. Explain what happened again, what happened to Shane and the twins?"

******

As soon as my ears laid upon Gracies words I panicked, Knowing poor Gracie knew how to manage the kitchen well enough Saying a quick "don't let dinner burn".

Making quick steps, grabbing a coat and rushing out the door. Adrenaline was controlling me, within six minutes I was out of our property line. The twins knew all the trails to the church, but Shane didn't know them very well.

What if he was lost?

All alone?

Kidnapped?

Why didn't I notest that his voice wasn't upstairs? Or his laughter?

*Twenty Minutes Later*

The Search was pointless, my breathing was about to fail me. My chest was collapsing and inflating itself over and over, I fell hearing a crack in my left leg. Grabbing the area due to pain, everything went into disaster.

I remember One thing about these woods at night.

Wolves.

Wild Wolves.

My eyes swelled, Hot tears scrolled down my cheeks in sorrow. Shene was only eight years old, so small a wolf could easily take him down. Imaging little poor Shane coming out of the woods in a body bag broke me. I couldn't protect him, I might not be able to see him again.

With all my sorrow, all my anger, my pain. I screamed his name. Over and Over and, and no response.

I waited on the cold hard ground and waited, thinking if he was truly alive he wouldn't make noise trying to stay hidden. Still I waited, not able to move, not wanting to worsen my injury.

Giggling of a child filled the dark and gloomy silence. Were my ears playinging tricks on me, it was Shane giggling. Then I heard his voice, Oh! His voice.

Looking towards where his voice was then I stopped. He was right there, it was what was next to him that shocked me.

It was him.

"G-Greyson"

*Greyson*

-Flashback-

-Five years ago-

The fire was crackling, being carried by the wind house-to-house. Screams of the mundane, or what others call people.

The crowd was overbearing, lone mothers screaming their children's names, pets crying for rescue from the flames, and the wild…well doing what the wild do best waiting.

I was along with them, not for the typical reasons.

I was waiting for the aftermath, the grieving, the damage to be repaired so that those little humans won't know that I was gone. Planning to end it all was easy, planning when? Now that's difficult.

At the edge of the road until.....I heard a voice.

Her voice.

"G-Greyson?"

-Preast time-

I forgot where I was, I wasn't at a lake with black smoke over-head with the screams of the mundane, I was here next to a little boy who appears to have the name Shane and I was in front of her.

The woman who was in my past, the woman who knew my actual name. Something was…wrong and I was going to figure out what.

Only problem is the kid, I've been improvising for a while until I found her. Barking and nugging was the only way for him to get the message 'go away'.

He ran to the woman hugging her tight, not even knowing of her injury. The woman shared the embrace only until his back was turned, her face turned sour glaring at my soul. But she never spoke, only mouthing her words.

"You show me where the twins are and how you got here." Her face slowly turned into rage by the second.

"Or your pelt will become my coat." Shivers went from the tip of my nose to the end of my tail in fear, she wasn't playing.

Her merciless manner reminded me of bears, ferocious as well as caring.

The only thing I could do is point my nose to where the kids are and walk off.

Only if she would let me, but smelling the infection of the injury I was hesitant.

Great.
