Chapter 3 - Chapter 2

"Just got off the phone with the rest of my siblings. Everything seems to be okay in their area." Luke nods keeping his eyes on the road. "If we're really doing this and this is really happening, shouldn't we get more guns and ammo." Luke shakes his head and looks at me for 2 seconds before turning his head back towards the road.

"All we need to focus on is getting the hell out of here. Toronto is packed with humans and infections can get around quickly if not careful. If superstitious people are thinking what we are, then gun shops will be full with people and we do not want to be in a crowd. Besides the guns and ammo, we already have should suffice if we make it out on time."

Never knew Luke took so many things into consideration. He is smart, there is no doubt about that. He is just so silly all the time that you do not get to see this side of him much.

"And if we don't make it out in time?" Luke looks at me for a second. "Then it's best you aren't wearing those boots that you have packed in your suitcase." He smiles and turns his head back to the road.

"If sh*t goes wrong there is no way I'm leaving these behind. Besides, you know I can run in them. Even beat your a*s one time." I say with cockiness laced in my voice. "And one time is all it ever was. I wasn't on my game that day."

I roll my eyes. "Okay. Whatever helps you sleep at night." He turns his head towards me, but I keep my eyes on the road. A couple of cars ahead of us and an upcoming red light. There is an intersection to our right where a bright red car ahead of us is in front of.

"I mean it. I was feeling out of shape and-" "BREAK!" I yell. He immediately stops, causing the car behind us to ram into us from behind. Not before we witness a black truck coming from the intersection on our right ramming straight into the red one in front of us flipping it over like you would a pancake.

As the car crashes into us from behind we jolt forward from the impact. With our seatbelts on though, we did not take any damage besides a sore back. I instantly go to check up on Kookie.

Kookie is simply fine, as he had a seatbelt as well. What? You never know.

The car behind us though. Not so much. It was a way smaller car than ours and took quite the damage from ramming into us and the car behind it ramming into it. Luke looks at me to make sure I am okay and I give a slight nod.

We look ahead of us, and it looks nothing like how it was 2 seconds ago. The truck that ran into the red car is in flames, the red car is demolished with darker shades of red from blood covering the bits of pieces left.

The sight is horrifying. People are screaming on the streets while others are chasing after them with savage looks in their eyes.

After coming out of shock Luke immediately steps on the gas and drives around the wreck as much as possible. Scraps of metal shower the road like snow on a frigged day. Luke makes sure to avoid the bigger pieces, but the smaller chunks are still doing damage to the tires.

Cars start slamming into each other, drivers start to lose control, people are running in the streets. It is almost impossible to drive around. Almost. "Let me take the wheel." I tell Luke obviously not asking.

We take our seat belts off and cross over the middle compartment between the seats. I get into the driver's seat and fasten my seatbelt. Luke gets into the passenger seat and does the same thing.

I shift the gear from park to drive. I push the gas pedal and step on it. I maneuver around the cars in my way and try not to run people over. Some infected start chasing after us, but quickly reroute for an easier meal.

As I drive by some people start banging on the door asking us to let them in. I obviously ignore them. As cruel as it sounds, we are in no situation to be taking care of people. But something does catch my eye. 2 children alone. Siblings with the brother looking the oldest at around 7 and the sister around 5.

"Luke take the wheel," I say no more and hop out of the car and onto the crowded and panicked street.

"What are you doing?!" I hear Luke yell from behind me inside of the car. "See those two kids to your right? I'm getting them."

I start running over to them avoiding the stampede of people in my way. "Dammit!" I hear Luke yell from afar.

I am close to the kids right when an infected comes dashing towards me. You would think with a decaying body they would not be able to run that fast. But the b*tch is dashing like an Olympic racer. Looks like buddy was just out for a daily run with his joggers and t-shirt. Poor lad.

I gave him a good kick to the face, the rougher part of my shoe shoves it's way through his decomposing skull. Must have turned a while back if his head was that easy to get through. I take my shoe out of his head. Great. Now I must wash it. Not that I have that privilege any longer.

I continue to make my way towards the two kids. Once I am close enough to them, I hear them yelling. "MOMMY! DADDY!" the little boy screams from the top of his lungs, attracting unwanted attention in the process.

"Hey over here!" I yell "Do you have my mommy and daddy?!" the little boy yells. Oh f*ck me. "No, but you'll have a better chance of finding them with me." The boy starts to think it over, thinking we have time we really do not have. Meanwhile, 3 infected are headed our way.

I do not take the chances and dash toward both kids grabbing each of their separate arms. "Hey! Mommy said I cannot go with strangers!" Even now the kid is sticking to those rules. Smart kid. Honestly, in a situation like this, it is best to keep that in mind. Parents must have taught them well. Shame they may be one of the psychos running around on the streets.

"Hey, kid. You ever play those zombie games." Without waiting for a response, I continue "You know if you get bitten it's game over. In the streets yelling like that, it will not be too long until that happens. Come with me and you will be safer and have a better chance of finding your parents. Got it?"

I cannot tell if he nods his head or not since I am looking straight ahead at our vehicle that is slowly being overcrowded with people begging to go inside. Luke sees me from the window and starts the car. He starts to drive forward, shaking off the people from the side. I quickly run in his direction.

The passenger door pops open, and I throw the kids in while still running. After they safely crawl into the back seats, I jump in myself. Just as I am about to close the door a hand pops through. A very unsanitary rotting hand. It keeps the car door from closing.

As the door starts to open again it reveals the face of one of the infected. I quickly kick it in the head, but it must be newly turned considering the action only throws its head back a bit. I continue to kick until it eventually grabs my leg surprisingly hard.

"Aghh" I groan. "Cover your ears and lean back!" Luke yells. I do as I am told, and it does not take long for me to hear a shot being fired straight through the zombie's head. My ears start to ring despite me covering my ears, as expected.

I quickly close the door and sit back in my chair and huff an exhausted sigh of relief. "What the hell were you thinking?! You could have gotten yourself killed!" Luke shouts. "And leave the kids? I couldn't have that on my conscious."

Luke huffed. "You don't even like kids." "Doesn't mean I'll leave them to die. Besides, once we find their parents, we can drop them off with them."

"And if we don't?! And what if we do and the parents decide to tag along? More mouths to feed." I look at Luke. He looks angry, but most of all just worried. I know he is only saying this out of concern for our well-being. He would not have left those kids either. "I don't know."

"Doggie!" is the first thing I hear that comes from the little girl's mouth. "Yeah, doggie." I sit back in my chair and close my eyes and slowly start to drift off."
