Chapter 5 - Chapter 4

I saw the glass doors were about to break. I had no idea what to do. If we went upstairs, we'd be trapped, but if we stayed here, we'd be dead. Okay, maybe I do know what to do. "RUN!" I yelled at Tom who too, was busy staring at the glass door in horror.

I grabbed his hand and went up the stairs, not wanting to get trapped in the elevator if we didn't make it to the top before those rabid humans got in. We jump at least two steps at a time and waste none of it. When we got to Selena and my floor, something jumped toward me.

Tom quickly pulled me back before a lady who looked homeless scratched me. She had a long floral pattern-torn skirt and an oversized sweatshirt. Her red eyes gazed into my brown eyes, successfully terrifying me. She looked as if she wanted to rip me apart!

Tom pushed me behind his back so that he now stood in front of the crazed woman. I looked around to see if we could fight with something. ANYTHING!

I looked around and saw nothing useful. Just an empty hallway with a 'Wet sign.' It was to my right. I looked at Tom, the crazy woman, and then the sign. As she leaped towards Tom, I quickly sidestepped to the right and grabbed the sign. I lifted it as high as possible and with as much strength as I could muster, slammed it down right onto her head before she even touched Tom.

He looked at me with wide eyes, but I ignored it and kept my focus on the woman who had yet to stop moving.

In a quick second, she was right back up, dashing towards me this time.

My heart started to rapidly beat, but instinct overtook fear and I slammed the sign on her head again. This time I didn't wait until she got back up. I kept smashing the sign on her head until it broke, giving me the advantage of a sharp edge.

As soon as she was about to get up I impaled the sharp edge of the sign into her skull. I kept going even when she stopped moving. I didn't stop. I couldn't. If I did, I would have to come to terms with the fact that I just killed a woman. So I didn't stop. I kept going and going and going until Tom stopped me.

He knew why I was doing what I was doing but we didn't have time for my mental breakdown.

"We have to get to Charles and Selena." He told me in a soft voice, sympathy in his eyes. I just nodded my head and didn't say a word. We quickly ran to my room number. We banged on the door shouting for them to let us in.

About two minutes later, we heard shouting but no movement of the door. I heard Selena rush to the door and it quickly opened to reveal my frightened best friend. She quickly ran towards me and hugged me. "Dammit, Selena!" Charles yelled.

"Why would you even ask me to do such a thing if what you said is true!" she shouted at him. I didn't know what they were talking about, but I had a pretty good idea. Charles wanted us to stay locked out. He didn't want to risk letting in what we saw. I don't blame him. There was one right in the hallway.

Still, this shows that he'd be willing to make what should be a hard decision so easily. It puts me on edge knowing that he could betray us at any given time for his own survival.

Tom ignored the entire situation and tried looking for ways out besides the glass door. "We don't have time for this we have to go!" Tom yelled and at that moment I heard my whole world fall apart along with that glass door.

They were inside. There were so many and no sign is going to take them all out no matter how sharp.

I looked outside the big window in the hallway to my right and saw a palm tree skinny enough to climb down. Remembering the decaying hardwood furniture in our room, I quickly dashed inside. I grabbed a big piece of wood and went outside in the hallway again.

I would have to make this quick, otherwise, those things would be attracted by the noise.

I had to drown out the shrieks of help I heard from those from downstairs who weren't fortunate enough to escape the wrath of the infected. I'm sticking to infected because zombie sounds too unreal, yet saying it would make me face the fact that this is the start of the apocalypse, and the world as we know it is over.

I ran towards the glass window hoping it would shatter in one hit. If the furniture is this bad, how good can the windows be?

I banged the stick against the glass and saw it crack. Charles looked at me and yelled. "What the hell is she doing she's going to get us all killed?!" He quickly came my way, but I ignored him. I kept banging on the window and speeding up the process as I heard snarls coming up the stairs.

One more hit and the window will bust.

I was about to swing until I didn't feel the stick in my hand anymore. I looked back and saw a very angry Charles. "Stop making all that damn noise before you doom us all!" He yelled, which I found stupid since he took away the stick because of the noise it was making when it connected to the glass and here he was shouting.

Tom quickly made his way towards Charles and took the stick from his hand. "She's not dooming us she's saving us, you idiot!" He said as he made the final hit, breaking the glass and throwing the stick in the process.

The snarls were getting louder and louder until finally, I saw one of them at the top of the staircase. It looked around until it made contact with one of us and hissed. It fricking hissed. I honestly shouldn't be surprised by the snarls I heard, but I was still terrified nonetheless.

Everybody saw it dashing towards us. We all acted quickly as we jumped out the window and onto the palm tree we slid down. The infected jumped out of the window just to land flat on its face, splashing its brain everywhere. Gross.

Selena gagged and started to puke. I held her hair back, trying not to puke myself. We saw more of the infected through the shattered window. All jumped and landed to their doom, but some were stronger than others and survived the fall. We didn't stay to find out if others had survived.

With the large pile of bodies out of the window, I'm sure the impact wouldn't be as hard and the rest would have survived. The streets looked like a horror film. We didn't know where we were going. Our only goal was to avoid where we heard the most screams which were hard since there were screams everywhere.

I saw someone try to get into their car but get dragged down by one of the infected. He left his keys in the ignition. The infected who bit him saw another potential victim and ran after she left the guy to change into one of them.

After he did he got up and chased after anything alive. I looked and made sure nothing and nobody was around the car. "GUYS!" I tried to scream above the chaos. Tom and Selena heard me and stopped, but Charles didn't he kept running.

I pointed towards the car and they understood. Unfortunately, my screaming attracted some unwanted attention. I went to chase after Charles. He hadn't gotten far. I heard Tom scream at me, but I ignored him trying to catch up to Charles.

I sprinted towards him until I finally managed to reach him just to end up with a fist in my face. "What the hell!" I screamed. Charles turned back with a panicked look on his face. He probably thought I was an infected. By the time Charles realized it was me Tom had reached us, but I noticed Selena wasn't with him. "Where's Selena!" I shouted. "The car!" Tom responded.

I let out a sigh of relief. That quickly vanished when I saw not one, not two, not three, but five infected running towards us. Hell, it took me forever to beat one! We didn't know what to do. They were blocking the direction towards Selena. I was about to run right past them hoping to juke them until I heard an engine. I looked up and saw the vehicle that the man didn't make it to.

Selena was in the driver's seat. "That's my girl!" I yelled as she slammed all five infected. "Get in!" she yelled. None of us hesitated and we made our way inside the car. We closed the car door and I relaxed in the back seat a little bit, knowing I wasn't fully exposed to the chaos like I was a minute ago.

Charles was in the back with me and Tom was in the passenger seat. I knew Selena didn't know where she was going when she slammed the gas, but anywhere but here has got to be better. It has to.
