AT HIS GRAVE!
Deborah Olatunji stood by Marcus's grave and wept sore. Her nose red, from the continuous dripping of mucus that ran down due to excessive crying. This was not what he had promised her, she said to herself.. He had made a vow to live with her forever untill they were both old and stricken in age but here she was, barely four months after their introduction and she was burying him.
Marcus had died from liver cancer. His family had a history of liver disease but he was always too carefree about it. His uncle died at 42 from it and His dad at 54, but still, It did not not bother him, he never figured he would die at the age of 27. His job as a marketer at a micro finance bank suddenly became too stressful for him. He was due for promotion and he also wanted to meet his target to climb faster in his career. He was energetic and ambitious, Hence, He never had the time to process the continuous stomach and back ache he frequently suffered.
Deborah being 24 is young and full of life, however, she could not recover from the shock, when Marcus mother called her to come to the hospital two weeks ago adding that Marcus slumped at work. They could not even say good bye. While the doctor carried out their investigation, Marcus winked at her weakly, promising her he would talk later after the nurse asked that she should excused them from the room. He died three hours later and She did not have the chance to say goodbye. Marcus mother collapsed instantly, she could not bear the thought of loosing her only son. His liver had deteriorated badly and there was nothing the doctors could do for him.
Standing by his grave side, Debbie mourned greatly. She met him in church when she was 19 years old and They had promised to do things right by the Lord. Young, spirited christians with so much zeal for living life the right way scripturally.
Debbie being a pastor's daughter had vowed to remain a virgin till marriage. Obviously, she would remain one for life! she thought to herself.
She removed the engagement ring and dropped it by the casket. She allowed the tears flow out as the casket was being lowered. She imagined him waiving her goodbye as she dropped on her knees to the floor.
