Chapter 16 - Chapter 15

Anna cursed under her breath. She hated the morgue as much as Samantha does. She had bad experiences inside the morgue, one was a prank and the other was something she wanted to bury deep down in the inner recesses of her mind. It also didn't help that the monstrous thing inside her might wake up to the stimulus of death and blood.

She clicked her tongue and slowly began to pray the Lord's Prayer as she tried to be as calm as possible. Her heart beat faster as she moved inside the morgue to retrieve the file. The room was silent and still. There was not an inch of movement nor a sound inside there. The chart laid face down on the floor. She immediately picked it up and swiped her card to open the door, when suddenly, the lights flickered.

"Emergency power on." The automated voice announced inside the morgue. "Power supply interruption. Rebooting in 10 minutes." The flickering lights went out.

Anna's heart raced even faster. Being trapped alone inside the morgue could go both ways for her, and either way is bad. Trembling and light-headed, she hit the iron door hard and shouted for help, but nobody answered. She did it a few more times but nobody answered.

She took a deep breath and decided to relax. The morgue was simply just a morgue. She went through her pocket, grabbed a pill from the bottle, and swallowed it. Anna closed her eyes and sat on the floor while trying her best to think about serene places and happy moments before anxiety could consume her.

A few minutes later, she calmed down. She opened her eyes and saw nothing but pitch-black darkness. Another minute passed and the lights went on once again, albeit flickering. Anna stood up while sighing in relief. She waited for the power to turn back on back permanently, however, it was taking too long for the electricity to stabilize.

"W-what's that smell?" Anna smelled something gross, yet somehow familiar scent.

It smelled rotten like rotten guts but had a sweet lingering scent of honey. Anna looked around as her heart raced once again. No one was there but her… Or so she thought.

She heard a loud metal clanging at the edge of the room. It sounded like a tray full of equipment scattered on the floor. She stood in front of the door unwilling to move. Then she heard a low hissing sound coming from somewhere within the morgue.

The hissing sounds stopped a few minutes later, but instead was replaced by cracking and gnawing sounds like someone was eating. Anna dared not to call out whoever it was. She covered her mouth and tried her best to control her breathing.

The sound lasted for a while, then it vanished. A few minutes later, she heard scratching sounds just a few steps away form her. She silently slid into the floor and sat near the door, shaking in fear. The lights began to flicker once again, but she didn't dare open her eyes.

The smell of rotten flesh filled the air. Anna could feel the warm, sticky breath of the monster right in front of her. She dared not to open her eyes and prayed silently, hoping the beast would simply past her.

The monster snarled and then left. She could hear the monster pacing around the row of carcasses. The footsteps stopped and the next sound she heard was from someone chewing. Its claws scratched against the metal table while the sound of flesh squished against the monster's mouth.

Not a few moments later, she heard the lights flickering once again. There was a loud banging at the door.

"Anna!" Sabrina's muffled voice came through the other side. "Anna are you still there?!" She banged the door once more.

Anna held her voice, but unfortunately, she opened her eyes. The dimmed and flickering lights made the beast more monstrous. Its red eyes stared directly at her. It stood up from the table, revealing its long, thin arms and bony body.

The monster had a human frame but was so thin it looked like its skin attached directly into its bones. It snarled at her, dropping the slab of meat caught in its mouth. The monster grinned at her as it caught her staring.

The snarls became louder and its thick, razor tongue hung from its mouth. It was hairless all over and had some markings all over its body, a pattern that looked like feral and cat like stripes.

Sabrina banged the door once again, calling her name out, but she was too scared to answer. Death was staring at her right in the face. Anna slowly stood up, nearly breathless and trembling. The lights flickered once again, and with that, the monster leapt in front of her pushing her against the door.

For some reason, Sabrina was unable to hear the thud. She just kept on banging the door. Anna could hear her friend speaking to some people outside, but they couldn't hear the audible growl coming from their side.

The monster sneered at her before licking her face with its long, thick tongue. The razor tongue scrapped some of her skin making it bleed. Anna and the creature's eyes met, but the murderous craze in its eyes were gone.

Its hands that were squeezing shoulders trembled, and slowly released its grip on her. Its growl became a soft whimper as it slowly backed away from her. The monster trembled and immediately tore its own tongue off.

Shrieking in pain, it gave its tongue to Anna before kissing the ground and running away into the morgue's darkness corners. Anna's voice was sealed from terror. She looked down and saw the wriggling tongue slowly transforming to that of a human being.

She could hear Samantha and Ms. Min knocking at the door but she froze. The lights flickered once again, but this time the generator has already rebooted. The dim lights glowed brighter. The door finally opened; Anna looked at her colleagues in relief.

"Anna!" Samantha caught her in her arms as she went unconscious.
